What's a memory leak on a Mac? LOL

As a long, long, long, time Mac user the past year has seen tons of memory leaks from Firefox to the point where it was using up all my system memory. Just sayin.

Mac is nice but it isn't perfect.

Ew firefox ;) Never said macs don't get memory leaks ever. Just in my personal experience i haven't had any issues with them whatsoever so that and my personal distaste for windows leads me to joke at the windows users who appear to experience them more frequently than mac users

Hey guys, no update/solution yet for this, but we are continuing to investigate. In the meantime, as others have stated, you can use the supplied template or create a new character; this is limited to copied characters from the Live NA megaserver.

No @ZOS_GinaBruno the problem is not just with copied characters. There is also a problem with newly created characters. After you spend a few skill points you are unable to open your skill window without the game freezing up. You are not able to open your inventory without the game freezing up.

@ZOS_GinaBruno - NO it isn't JUST the copied NA characters. Its the newly created PTS characters as well when the game kicks you out it applies the same glitch.

Depends really on what you want to do. With the templates you get 100kk gold, all furnishing recipes and all houses for free, and 100% on most skill lines. So the crafting and vendors is easy to check; all you won't be able to do is test your own builds and buy houses with in-game gold (since the templates don't have any of the prereq quest achievements).

no, without being able to spend skill points on my new character i CAN'T do the other half of the upcoming update activities. can't get to the towns because i have to skills to use to fight or heal with. no way to put the points into the crafting skill lines either. on my NEW PTS Character it crashes me (and at LEAST a few others of us here i see) and when i go to log back in it then treats that new character like the copied characters and locks up the load right away. so ALL i can do is make ANOTHER new character and repeat the same Crown-Only part of the experience. you have to be able to spend at LEAST a FEW skill points without crashing to do anything else. :( I'm now on my 3rd try.

Ah sorry I hadn't realised that spending skill points also caused the issue.

And I can't create a new character without buying that option from the crown store, unless I delete one of the characters I want to test with this new update. I refuse to spend money in the crown store to test a free PTS and I won't re-level toons that I want to test builds on, so the work arounds aren't an option for me.

Oh GOODIES! {insert sarcasm here} Guess what? if you somehow get your skill points in at least to your crafting lines without it crashing you- DON'T SPEND YOUR CP! _THAT_ causes the character to crash out too. :/ and THEN it doesn't work. Again.

UPDATE: Correction, THIS toon lets me back into the PTS.....and then crashes every couple minutes when I'm doing ANYTHING. This time all i did was open a merchant screen. :(
ADDITIONAL UPDATE: The sell screen of all merchants locks her up. CP allotment locks her up. Crafting station tab swap locks her up. I Can't even open my INVENTORY SCREEN without crashing now. >:( and Skill point allotment ruins the toon and she has to be remade. omg, this is so glitchy.

Update to my situation: I was able to log into the PTS on a new toon that I created last week; a Level 7 NB, with only 7 skill points used.

In contrast, the original toon I was trying (my main) is a Level 50 CP630, with 150+ skill points used.

Also, I noticed that my "last location" listed on the Character Select page was Cyrodiil, when I had not last logged off in Cyrodiil. And the PTS was trying to log me on in Grahtwood.

Don't know if that helps, but I thought it was strange.

I can get in, I can load up a template character...... problems start when I start to assign skill points. If I don't do that, and just mooch around, I'm fine. If I assign any skill points, all other actions after that (open character screen, open inventory, etc) simply freezes the game them crashes the client. If I stay in the skill point screen too long, the game crashes too.

It is an entirely consistent bug too. Happens every time, without fail.

On the plus side, I was able to view houses via the crown store preview (you can do this if you don't open inventory or assign skill, just go straight to the Crown Store) and I have already booked the removal van to take my saddlebags to Daggerfall Overlook. Moving-in party will be held in the great hall.

You may be quite happy to level several toons and grind out the CP on a PTS just so you can test new skill changes and builds, I'm not. The last thing I want to do on a PTS is grind out new toons to max level. I want to test on the toons I already have. That really isn't too much to ask.

Sorry, I don't get what you mean. You appeared to be complaining that you didn't want to spend money on the Crown Store on PTS, and all I said was that the Crown Store on PTS is free. The fact that you can't access the template characters, or log in to your own characters, while annoying, is not related to my reply to you about the Crown Store being free.

I totally get where you're coming from, your reasoning, but if you use the cp561 template EVERYTHING is already done for you. you assign points and you are done. no grinding required. i personally was looking forward to this specifically so i could input my current fav build and try out some of the harder to get sets on her to see if they were worth farming on Live without having to load her specifically and still not have to grind one out either. all skills though on the template are done and maxed as are the skills- you just have to be able to assign the waiting skill points. Therin lies the OTHER mac issue currently.... making our new PTS toons does us no good since skill point allotment makes everything else about the character unplayable then. They REALLY need to give us a fix.

same here. this doesn't bode well for us mac clients come release because we're being robbed of our test time to report any additional mac-specific glitches before they go live. :( they are busy trying to straighten out the pc side before launch and that means they likely won't have time for us before next month. they will have to take us after its live. again. ugh. :( i was so looking forward to working out the crafting side too so i wouldn't have to buy everything. :( Oh well. I'll bring the keg to the move-in party. lol

OK, so managed to log in to my template character on the PTS (vanilla clean install with no add-ons) and I can load the character into the world and move around and enter a building. I also heard the 'ding' to say that more emails had arrived (curse of the template character).

I consistently hard lock when I press the I key to bring up my inventory (this has repeated on 3 consecutive occasions).

I've already loaded 64 attribute points and all champion points previously but have not attempted to add any skill points as yet.

yeah, my templates are unplayable. same lock up. well, the 1st one crashed in skill point allotment and hasn't been usable at all to get past grey out load crash. the second one made it to put crafting skill points in, attribute, and CP. but during CP it crashed and since every time i try to do anything it locks up. i can't use inv. can't open mail. can't interact with merchants(reg npc's or my own merchant) most recently i crashed opening map. my PTS was also a clean install and no add ons are running. i even tried to repair to no avail. :(

@ZOS_GinaBruno - still no word on a fix or whats going on? Many of us can't seem to help but feel that our issues seem to be taking a big backseat to the windows folks, partially due to customer base, but also because you guys seem to mistakenly think that making a new template character is a viable workaround for us and it isn't. Is this being seriously looked into yet? Because making a new template character is NOT allowing us to test the new patch out in ANY way but viewing houses and buying from crown store. Any other activity in any ways is causing crashes, lock ups and in many cases making our new templates to be as inaccessible as the ported characters. Update please!

OK, further testing and it appears that with CP points applied, it causes the crashes on trying to open the menu (such as pressing I for inventory).

I created a new character have added a couple of skills and was able to fully interact with merchants, crafting stations, mail, inventory, crown store carry out battles, use a collectible merchant etc etc. All ran perfectly. I then added CP's (on the account due to the original template character) and as soon as I try to do any interaction with the menu bar (open inventory etc), a straight hard lock.

Definitely an issue with a character having CP applied causing a knock-on with the UI stability. I'll run again to see if I can get in the CP menu to delete all points and see if that locks up trying or if successful, returns client stability.

EDIT: Managed to load the newly created character in and press = to get to the CP screen and pay 3000 to reset all trees to 0. Mac client has once again worked with no issues and no longer locking trying to view inventory.

Thats what I had to do... the windows version has its own problems as you expect with a beta but they are minor by comparison I fell afoul of the message spamming thing and was kicked out to the log in when I was rapidly buying things in the crown store)

my project right now is running around gathering sky shards to see if you spend every point available can you max out everything on offer of if you are short on points and after spending about 300 points on this template toon the bug seen on the Mac client when spending points has not been seen.

I tried about 3 toons on the mac client the first hung at about 10 points spent while assigning bow points the next failed trying to access the bank and the last at about 100 points spent while assigning armor points

using the windows client all 3 of these toons are available and working ok... so the mac client is not doing anything to the server side versions of the toons... its all in the mac client

Huh, the issue may be somewhat complex. Some mac users (myself included) seem to be able to bypass the whole issue through the use of templates, while others continue to see issues with templates and after having logged in. I've been logging in for the sake of testing Housing, and so the only skill points I've assigned have been in the crafting skill trees, and so far I have experienced very few issues in the game itself. Maybe it has to do with specific skill points being used on the character.

I'm thinking the same. i see a consistent issue with adding skill points to light armor but saw no issue with class lines and crafting skills. i was able to repeat the armor failure with the toon again becoming unplayable with the same issues as the ported toons.

any CP allotment however, with or without skill point assignments, seem to glitch the toon when applied in any amount, so that sale screens, inv, mail, crafting stations, get worse with each crash and reload of that toon- though that template CAN be reloaded unlike the skill point issue.

My next test before the PTS patch will be trying different templates to see if its isolated to a specific template as I've only done the max lvl max cp template so far.

My optimism for 2.7 is waning as far as the Mac client is concerned.

Despite having stability by not applying any Champ Points; on applying just my 3rd skill point (after a few hours play of no problems with no SP's added) the client once again hard locked. After a reboot I can launch and get to character select, but when I try to load in this low level character again, I simply get a black screen with the music playing, which never progresses beyond this and so not even loading up the character into the world. Again a forced machine reset needed to clear this.

I hope the next PTS 2.7.1 addresses this. How this has not been picked up pre PTS push, I'm astonished. Is there any Mac testing apart from what their customers carry out :(

The mac programing department is quite small I have been told with the responsibility only for making the windows developed code base run under OS X as such I expect little in house testing of the mac client takes place beyond basic stability checks...

my main gripe with this release has been the nature of the crashes I am seeing. The are not of a sort that I can get access to the core OS and see proper crash logs. They Freeze the Mac with the last scene frame on screen and the last accessed music on endless loop the mouse can move the cursor on screen but no the input works. the only recourse is a power reset. letting the computer sit over night does nothing (so in the frozen condition this will not result in a memory overflow "proper crash" with its logs.)

I actually spent some time with C+++ attempting to create a bug that would duplicate this behavior all to no avail all I get for my efforts are 'proper crash' with easy to use crash logs.

yes indeed lets hope that the Mac folks provide something we can test with PTS 2.7.1

I'm just hoping they can make it work live, I'm past worrying about the PTS. As much as I'd like to get in there and test a lot of different things, I just don't see Mac users being a part of this PTS.

Additionally, will they push it out to live and make a part of their customer base unable to play? Is it large enough of a concern?

This is my worry. I am absolutely not going to use bootcamp for ESO (although on my machine) as I only use BC for business use with parallels rather than booting into windows.

If players simply move from using the Mac client to their bootcamp, then the play data , may make it compelling for ZoS to remove support and the ability to use a Mac to play ESO at all. I do not want that to happen.

Agreed. After launch and the 1st couple major mac updates it took me almost 6 mo and 4+ level tiers of tech support to find out about their Re-write issues with patching and the Mac client. It's part of what made the mac client need 85gb space to download AND install the game above their original listed 50gb and min mac specs. they have been abysmal on mac support thus far in the game and the more time that goes on the more mac has become a viable gaming system for those of us that need all-in-one machines for our work. i, for one, will NOT buckle to the BC push they seem to be making. I invested in the better graphics card and more memory when i got my new iMac(that i HAD to get to play ESO because their min mac specs were no longer relevant) specifically so i could enjoy this game like the windows gaming machines and instead i keep getting stonewalled by their lack of actual mac support. its depressing. i takes me several emails when i DO have a bug to get past them asking me to do things i can't or SHOULDN'T be doing on my mac to resolve the issues.

Anyone else notice how they have LOTS of ZOS admin interaction on the Windows PTS support thread getting additional info oct, but all we've had here is half a and-aid and NO additional support or acknowledgement??

Well, I'm not gonna sit and spout garbage at them. I'm fairly certain they are spread pretty thin right now with the balance updates that no one is happy with, and the AMAZING (seriously amazing) housing coming up, on top of keeping it all going. They have jobs to do, and if anyone told me how or when to do my job.... I'd be fairly annoyed at the least.

They'll get it fixed. If they don't, they will lose customers, and they know that. They aren't stupid.

It's only PTS anyway. there's plenty of things live to still do. Like get more gold, for housing.

Still having the problem and it's NOT just characters imported,.. Even newly created characters will crash after spending a few skill points and opening up inventory.

I never had the problem with opening my inventory, UNLESS I had skill points spent. I'm logging back in now on a toon with no points spent, am able to access my inventory/crownstore/housing editor, but again, that's with zero points spent.
