Console text chat discussion II

I have been playing this game since Early Closed Beta. From then until about 5 or 6 months after launch, I never used Text Chat. I also did not join any Guilds and only sold to in game vendors. I played this game about as Solo as you can play it, only Ad Hoc Grouping (where you tend to run with someone without being grouped with them). I was not into the Social Aspect of it at all.

However once I got the idea in my head that interacting with the other players might have some benefit and could be fun, I dove into Text Chat full bore and now I have friends all over the place in the game, became a recruiter for a guild I am in and have found some nice bargains in zone chat, and was able to swap some Ambrosia Fragments for what i needed to get my recipe. I can respond to and help a guild mate with some difficult content, I can ask for help. This is nothing that anyone does not know, it is just illustrating my changing view on socializing in an MMO.

I was never against Text Chat, it was just something I did not feel the need to use at first. However, my mom has this game now for the PS4, she is 72, and I was watching her play the game and showing a few pointers. All the time the area voice chat was going on. I could not make heads or tails of what was being said. I can not figure out how I would sell something to the zone, or ask for help, or talk to a Guild Mate about something with the Voice chat that is in place now. This is not from anyone being rude or something, just a babble of voices with no clear direction as to who said what. Even if I had happened to over hear someone who needed something or was selling something how would I find them? Give a shout out? Who would respond? The one I wanted or someone else for good or nefarious reasons?

As for being in the thick of things and then trying to type in a message, no, you can't. I can't on the PC, I would not expect anyone on the consoles to do that either. Even the Quick Chat method has some limitations, but can suffice for the few things that do need to be said in a battle. However we are not always in a battle, sometimes we stop our character in a safe place and say what we need to say. Or I am in a town and have all the time in the world to compose a message.

This game, and any MMO really, needs a way to have a target conversation with some or all the people in a zone or area, as someone sees fit. Without it, the game can never what it was intended to be, TES with Friends. Even if one does not use it, it can, or should be able to be, hidden so it will never bother you.

Also, Voice Chat is really makes Groups better. It might be fun for other things, but having run groups while on Team Speak and running groups not being on TS, I would have to say that Voice makes grouping better, but Text Chat is how you find that group.

TL/DR Both Platforms need Voice Chat, for Groups, and both platforms need Text Chat for everything else. Area Chat? I could do without that myself, but I can see how others would like it. I would certainly turn off AC on my game.

I think someone finally let the crew comment about text chat.

I can't wait for all the fun of the forums to reach me in the deepest dungeon.

No moderators on text chat, correct?

Hmmm an endorsement for text chat from an official source, could an announcement be incoming?

Text chat might be coming to console?

    Hmmmmm.

I am not Official. Just a fan of the game who helps people out. I get no money or free crowns or anything like that.

I have my criticisms of the game, and they are posted on the boards for all to see. But I also have my positive views and those are posted too.

I like to hear the sound of the game , the music , the atmosphere overall. I still love communicating and have been able to back to the PlayStation 2 , 3 , 4 in every other mmorpg I have played. I can't believe I have to choose to not communicate at all or not be able to just enjoy the sounds of the game while still chatting with others. Surely this has been noted in reviews or something as a negative thing.

    That's your problem.

Its not the number one priority in game,

Its a few people's number one priority on these forums.

In game, voice chat works fine.

Text Chat will make many of the games aspects much easier than it currently is.

Such as trading, grouping, random questing, guild recuritment. It will make guilds more active than they currently are because everyone would not have to be in the same voice channel to communicate with eachother.

Text chat is a big deal in any mmo, eso is no exception.

I very much enjoy the game so far. I am irritated by the no remap of controls but much more by the no text chat. If reinforcing the idea of the Elder scrolls lore and world is so important to them , how can they not think of the idea that many in mmo's never even use vent/ts as they like to hear the world as the programmers made it. Again I am shocked it is not here. And I have seen some claiming that it is not the way of consoles etc. They must be very inexperienced with fantasy mmorpg's as it is very much the usual to have text chat. I have made so many friends over the years by chatting with many people all across the in game world while doing tasks no where near them. I think its very anti-social to only chat with your guild or you immediate area. How can someone possibly claim that allowing text chat would be anti social ?

Correct, voice works fine unless you need a group for a a specific dungeon or raid, or unless you want or need help with a quest, or unless you want to talk to someone without hearing 80 other people.

Seriously, voice works fine, but chat will enhance the game that much more. If you don't like it, then minimize the chat box and don't use it. But don't spit out "it's not a number one priority in game" , because this topic is discussed here and in game in almost every guild out there.
.... I have to admit, the devs do listen to reason, if not to the forums. Thank you for "nameplates", a welcome addition to immersion, as well as the text chat box for PS4, which only comes on the screen when I need it too, and helps this gameplay SO MUCH MORE then without it. THANK YOU for the additions. Very much appreciated.

I do see a bit of a problem with text chat missing that no one seems to have touched on.

When your player base is currently using alternatives outside of the game to perform certain tasks, then there is an apparent need for features that offer this functionality in game. Earlier today, I saw a post on the ESO subreddit where someone was having trouble getting groups on Xbox One and one of the recommendations was to have Internet Explorer snapped with the LFG website open in it. With text chat in game, grouping, selling and asking simple questions would be much more convenient and keep people spending more time in game rather than on the internet posting in for sale threads or checking looking for group listings.

There are entire websites and forums set up to supplement missing (text chat) or poorly implemented features (grouping tool/guild vendors). Most players simply don't want to camp wayshrines and/or stand around in cities endlessly yelling into their mics in hopes that someone will happen to hear them, want to group up, buy what they may be selling or sell what they happen to be looking for. They should be out questing or farming materials while occasionally typing in a chat box that reaches far more people than proximity chat or stationary guild traders ever will. I know if I built a game, I would prefer people actually play than stand around asking random passer-by's. There simply isn't anything fun about that.

Another downside to proximity chat is that a majority of people are likely turning it off or tuning out simply because of the "noise" associated with it. I've heard household arguments, babies crying, eating, annoying music/sound effects, etc. The first thing I do when stepping foot in any busy city is leave proximty chat.

    We'll said documented post.

Zos seems to be going out of there way of avoiding answer the console text chat discussion. On ESO live they where actively deleting message about console text chat. This to me is going to far, just address the issue instead of avoiding it. I keep hearing about how Zos is taking feed back from the forums and how Devs are always reading them yet, those who have been discussing console text chat are being ignored. They ended ESO live stating how they are listing to the fans, yet there has been over thousands of comments, many threads, and even several polls about console text chat, and all we get from ZOS is silence. We can't even get a response of we are working on a solution that would work for all players. Please address the issue ZOS.

Over the last few years, MMO's have been trickling into the console market. With out a doubt, in the 15 years of playing multiple MMOs, I've come to respect the PC community over console community in terms of sharing, helping and what not. I'm not saying console players don't do this, but in the fact that it is indeed more difficult to ask for help, especially as a beginning player.

In the PC version of any mmos, you'll most likely if not always have multiple ways of communicating for anything. Whether it be through guild chat, local chat, VOIP programs, global chat and so on.

With the console versions of ESO, you get a voice chat, and that's about it.

Now, with the problem from voice chat is that the game relies on the players taking initiative to getting things done via using the voice chat and adding players to guilds and progressing from there. However, when you are allocated to join up to 5 guild at a time, it becomes almost impossible to be in the same voice chat as someone who is willing to do the same things you are doing.

Now, I'm not saying there aren't guilds dedicated to helping new and veteran players, it's just indeed difficult to set up anything.

The beauty of MMOS in my opinion is the overwhelming and vast amount of anything and everything to do. Including communication tools.

This entire summary so far is my opinion just on the PVE side of things.

PVP is where it gets even worst. In PVP, fighting on consoles, it seems half of the individuals are indeed, no other word to describe it, Cocky. The other half are either new, looking for a group, trying to help individuals and it becomes a stalemate with in your own faction on getting stuff done. Now, granted, I am playing on Azura PS4 NA server and always have fights going on. But it becomes a problem of having too much pride and ignorance to where it makes everyone not a team player and only for themselves.
What can we honestly do about this?
Guild Text Chat would be a huge addition to this game. Why? Because everyone can read it, and everyone can opt out of the text chat at anytime, however it would add an extremely useful communication tool to get stuff going.
I don't know how many times I've tried to get guildies together and they weren't on, not interested , or doing other things. So this makes me quiver on the fact I have to wait for someone to log in, to finish or around my area who indeed wants to do the same thing.

With the group finder being extremely slow and most of the time non useful and becomes a waste of time (A lot of pub players leave after one or two wipes in dungeons), it becomes almost not worth trying.

With a guild text chat option, you minimize spam, you up your communication awareness and you essentially have a better flow in game.

I started this game with 5 friends and none of them play because of how hard it is to group with random people whom are seeking the same things they are.

For someone who only has a controller and a microphone, this is somewhat of a difficult task to ask of them.

Now, granted, the less cluttered screen is surely nice, but something must be done to speed up this issue.

I am in a few guilds with 300+ members, and having connections is always a good way to gain items, help, etc....
But again, without a very active and helpful guild, new members are even at a greater risk than usual on quitting entirely.

There has to be some sort of addon communication text box to this game or I don't feel it will go much further in terms of population.

ESO is very basic to learn, but I feel it's too basic on a lot of things. Communication is a must with MMOS, and it lacks the tools to effectively communicate.

Please Zenimax, add the text chat to consoles! I am so tired of logging in to here 4 people yelling at each other and the one guy snoring, I am constantly turning off my voice chat to be able to play the game in peace. In all the play sessions i've done so far my voice chat has been off and I have no reason or want to turn it back on. I also hate having to put a headset on to talk and I generally can't talk because it is too loud. Typing was subtle, much more expressive and less restrictive than voice chat.

Another thing is hearing a person's voice when your trying to play, it just destroy's the game. Also, I have yet to see an area where people are actually trading. It's pathetic that an MMO has no trading centre and this is because there is only voice chat. Because of your choice to exclude text chat, i'll never bother interacting with other players and mainly play the game solo.

I think that it will be cheap for ZOS to implement text chat on Smart Glass base. It will be helpful to chat with guildmates, groupmates and in trade chats from lovely phone or pad :)

No text is holding the console community back as a whole in game . Get it added let us grow FFS . 2 months on its beyond ridiculous. Oh yeah still got a critical chance , still no idea when I crit . Come on devs you're not stupid people and I'm sure also gamers you know exactly what's wrong with this. Combat data is equally important to me as text but at this point I'd accept text only and be happy enough without combat logs even though it seriously makes theory crafting difficult

The only time I miss text chat on PS4 is when a handful of us are defending a keep and no one shows up to help because people dont know. If we could somehow broadcast over Cyrodil for defense / attack that would fix it.. Other than that I am finding it hard to see how global / zone text chat helps anything more than simple chat bubbles.

Text Chat will help with guild recruitment, selling and buying items, grouping up for delvs, dungeons, and other pve group related content. It will make it easier for making pvp groups as well.

    All pretty big issues atm

A couple of those who do not want it added in the way it's being requested have made comments to that affect in the other thread where most of the conversation/discuss is going on.

I know why this was created but there is another older thread....
For me...it's the idea of ease of use, UI preferences, clutter and the negative that come with text chat on a console which is a drastically different ease of use and functionality than on PC.

Plenty of other mmos on consoles have some sort of text chat. For those whom are against it, just have an option to turn it off, and you're good to go.

There is really no reason it can't be implemented, or shouldn't be.

As well, I'm guessing for those who oppose of the idea are the very few individuals who have zero troubles on finding groups or even don't care about wasting time to get stuff in order. Regardless, I don't have that kind of time to sit around and waste. It's an mmo, which means grinding is indeed very long and so much to do, but that doesn't mean take away a much needed tool to get everything going.

I don't want to voice out to the world everytime I have a question, I shouldn't have to wait for someone who is comprehensive in the game to come help me. I shouldn't have to rely on whining kids to get through a dungeon with and have them wipe , then quit resulting in another waste of my time.

I'd even bump up to ESO plus if it was the only way to implement a guild text chat.

This makes zero sense.... because of UI clutter?

You do know that there are options to not only minimize chat boxes in mmo's but to also remove the chat box from the ui....

    Makes it tough to group.

Example: I have probably talked on the phone 5 times in the last 10 years. Text and IM are ways of life for me.

Maybe you just need a group of like minded sarcastic people that don't get but hurt over a joke.

Agreed. Fortunately, I've found one, started by a friend of mine (a Skyrimer). Sure we've only got a couple hundred members now, but, at least on this playthrough I may be able to group! I'm excited. Now, if I can only get my microphone to work without making me sound like Andy Rooney.
