Well, 16.6k views, 643 post, and 2 mod post later it looks like respecting your current customer base is very important to us. I am glad this community held ZOS's feet to the fire.

@ZOS Learn a lesson from this. The little things do matter and we expect you to go above and beyond for the hard earned money that we send you every month.

    mumok out.

Hey, everyone. We’ve received many questions about how non-Steam customers can get the in-game ESO Whiterun Wolfhound pet that is currently an exclusive part of the Steam offer. While the grey wolfhound will remain an exclusive through Steam, we will be offering a brown version of the Wolfhound pet (tentatively called the Riften Woflhound) at some point in the future. Stay tuned for more details on how you'll be able to get your hands on one.

I feel regret that your company felt bullied enough by your customers to come up with this type of response. If I knew any of you in person, I would take you all out for drinks (it's payday, what the Hell) and thank you for providing a game that I have so thoroughly enjoyed without any of this vanity pet nonsense.

"The Customer is always right" is wrong

Totally agree. If I worked in this industry I would probably quit after listening to the whine-fest on these forums.

I am a forum moderator for a different game company.
I consider ESO forum input to actually be relatively well structured and reasonable in comparison to the garbage I have to clean up.

I don't know, there was nothing "reasonable" about this vanity pet outrage. It was the epitome of immaturity and not understanding how the true world works. All I see are a bunch of millennials who always got there trophies even when they came in last place.

I couldn't agree more. It's quite shameful some of the displays that have been put on in this thread. I just hope that many of them are not adults. I can understand children being upset of petty things, but this outrage is downright embarrassing.

I am 67 and was quite active in getting them to give us access to the dog.

If you can't understand why, and just have some self serving agenda as an "adult", then my scorn will go right past you.

No 67 year old I have ever met would whine about such a thing so I seriously doubt it. They have a much better perspective of what is important in this world than a vanity pet.

I think you are attributing too much value to age. There are plenty of 50+ people who are a complete waste of oxygen, (many of them in congress! ba dump cha!) and plenty of younger people with their heads on straight.

This whole "older people have everything figured out" is just a dumb concept. I say that being somewhere in the middle agewise, and only really eligible to be referred to as young or old by the elderly or the very youthful.

P.S. free speech is only relevant when it is the government cracking down and putting you in jail or punishing you for what you have to say. This is a private forum and ZOS has to right to limit your speech here as they see fit.

Humans are strong because they're weak. We get what we want by any means. Most of us realize that means sacrificing a little dignity, and on an anonymous forum, that's not a difficult thing to sacrifice.

If you ask me, the person who should "give it a rest" is you. None of this talk about how our behavior isn't what it should be is changing anything. All you're doing is whining, just like we are, which kind of defeats your whole "don't whine" stance.

It's sad to see this route taken over that of giving every player even access to the same items and content via the online store. I was really hoping ESO would be a game I could collect every pet and item in for the first time, a game where there were no exclusives or deals which screw older players.

Today that dream died and with it a lot of my love for the developers of this game.

Well, I think it's wonderful that people have the guts to speak out against things they don't like. Be it imbalances, FPS issues, or a useless (albeit nice looking) dog. And you know what? That's all we can do. That's what gets results. Let me ask you something - what could we have done to get what we wanted here WITHOUT that atrocity you call "whining"?

I don't have to accept that this forum is going to be worse than the WoW forums. The community only gets better if people take a stand against unnecessary tantrum-throwing.

No. It is that hard for me to see the forum get hijacked by these threads.

This was a dog, people. A dog. And not even a real dog. A virtual one. A toy within a toy. And the forums were destroyed for a day because of it. They were taken over by a bunch of toddlers screaming, "Mine, mine, mine!" because they couldn't handle the idea of someone else getting something they didn't. I don't tolerate that behavior from my younger students, and I certainly don't have any patience for it in people who ought to be too old for it.

You are clearly missing the most obvious point that we're all concerned about.

Yes, they gave the Steamies a dog. No, that is absolutely not the main issue. The issue is favoritism. By giving them this (and us nothing), they're basically saying "we'd rather have new subscribers than keep old ones". That's rude. That's bad business. That's what they'd continue to do if we let them think it was okay.

Did they really get what they want? I think most of these people are expecting a free dog to arrive in their mail. I am not entirely sure that that is the way this will play out. It may be a pay-shop item, and then you are going to get a whole additional round of whining.

If you ask me, the person who should "give it a rest" is you. None of this talk about how our behavior isn't what it should be is changing anything. All you're doing is whining, just like we are, which kind of defeats your whole "don't whine" stance.

Sure, your little brother has that right. And it makes him an immature little brat. I wouldn't want your brother as a friend.

And the sentence, "Humans are strong because they're weak," has to be one of the silliest things I've read today. Don't excuse the atrocious, childish behavior of some of the players on this forum by saying that it's ok because human beings are generally weak creatures. Expect better of people.

I would expect better from people like you personally. Why comment criticize or put down people for just doing what they want to do, it doesn't cause you any issue in any way. You have went out of your way to be rude. Just leave go chat about something that matters to you and leave people to do what they want. It is not hard.

We have gotten plenty of perks for our subscriptions.

That said, that's not why we pay to play the game. We pay to play because we like it. It's not unreasonable to expect ZO to offer incentives or bonuses to new players. It is unreasonable to expect them to offer bonuses to existing subscribers simply for having the fortitude to continue playing a game they like. You don't deserve a reward for continuing to enjoy the game.

This forum was in no way hijacked have you even watched? The way the forum even works is that posts that are commented on get bumped. For the most part we have stuck to one that ones that didn't from what I saw were only commented on by people telling the op they were whining. Or some that didnt want to sift through this forum to know what happened those were quickly explained to and the thread died. if no one comments the thread gets dropped, you want to see something else heres an idea: POST SOMETHING INTERESTING TO TALK ABOUT.

Is that not tantrum-throwing in itself? Where exactly is the line between "taking a stand" and "whining"?

It's perspective. If you disagree with what's being stated it's "whining"; But if you agree with it then it's "taking a stand."

I admit, that I think there has been more then enough whining in this thread. But the overall principle behind it I can agree with, that being:

We were led to believe that by being subscription based, that all future content (1) after launch would be available to everyone. With this Steam 'exclusive', that entire concept was thrown out.

That is what I have against this. I don't care that they are giving the Dog pet to the people who buy it on Steam, but for me to not have the option of getting it if I wished without needing to create an entirely new account/subscription... No, that does not seem to fit with the same principle I was led to believe would happen with the subscription. *shrug*

    -M

    (1) - And yes, pets *are* content. Don't care how you try and explain it, if it is in the game, it is content.

We got purchase perks, somewhat like they did. Sure, it's overreacting a bit, but it's easy to see that they haven't done anything to really show us gratitude since release, other than what they said they would do: provide updates. No, we do not deserve a reward, but it isn't unreasonable for them to give us one anyways. Plenty of other games do it, some games give monthly incentives to players who stay subscribed. Perhaps there's a bit of false entitlement here, but there's logic as well.

There's also the fact that the perk they're getting is the one thing almost everyone asked for when vanity pets were announced. We were given monkeys, mudcrabs, little two-legged lizards, and the main things we asked for were dogs and cats. Now we're getting a dog, but it's restricted to new players who didn't even say they wanted it? That's just rude. That's like if someone politely asked you for a piece of gum, but instead, as if only to spite them, you gave it to someone who didn't even want it.

You think it's overreacting a bit? People are complaining that ZO is screwing them over because of a vanity item that doesn't impact gameplay in the least. That goes beyond overreacting.

And they have given us free game time when they haven't needed to, extremely quick fixes to problems and generally updated things on time. And yes, those things are perks.

As a side note, I've been here since fairly early in the beta process. I don't recall seeing an overwhelming demand for dogs and cats. The only threads I remember seeing about pets were when people started frothing at the mouth when they realized that the monkey pet might only be for the September stress testers.

So some people have said there are more pressing issues in the game and I would agree, on the surface this game does currently have issues that are more important than the Steam bonus dog.

However…however, I think the reason this has caused so much upset is because of those other issues and this has simply become the proverbial straw and a very symbolic one.

To be fair, ESO didn’t have the worst launch ever, far from it. That didn’t mean there weren’t frustrations. Bugs that had been reported in several betas that were still unfixed, some of which could hold up entire quests chains, for example.

Add to that players have endured numerous changes to skills, patches that caused severe lag and there’s a lot of debate and uncertainty over the Veteran Rank system.

On top of all that they find that the Steam release of the game comes with a bonus pet that many would say is better than the ones from the original pre-order bonuses. I think, whilst a very minor issue in and of itself, that it feels symbolic to a lot of players and has, ultimately, sent the message to those of us who’ve been here since betas or even simply the launch.

This is very poor marketing. The sad part is how easy…how easy this could have all been so much different.

Imagine, for a moment, if the announcement had been “For a limited time the Steam Imperial edition will come with a special pet, the Whiterun Wolfhound. For those who previously purchased the Imperial edition, and have an active subscription, don’t worry, you won’t miss out. Keep an eye on your in-game mail box for your own Whiterun Wolfhound as we celebrate our release on Steam.”

Not only would this have avoided the controversy we’re seeing in these forums now but would have produced a hell of a lot of goodwill and just slightly, ever so slightly, taken the sting off some of the more pressing issues.

But why should they give you a promotional gift for something you didn't even buy?

Do Steam people get our monkey? Do Steam people get the other gifts we got? No they don't, so why should we get their gift?

ZO did absolutely nothing wrong here, its the entitlement by several gamers which is wrong.

And now they get a wolf and its still not enough. It reminds me a bit about little kids who you buy a football and then they want a tennis racket. :'(
