Oil Pots should damage the user if he is in the AOE.

This is a simple fix to the ground oil pots thing. You use the oil pot and are in the AOE, it hits you as well. No worries of griefing because it doesn't hit anyone, just keeps people from using some of the lamer oil spam.

    Pour somewhere else = good.
Pour at your own feet = you die too.
This would only be acceptable if ANY damage could hit me and players from my faction (friendly fire). And believe me, that you don't want!

I recommend Sun Tzu's "The Art of War". His thinking can be applied to fighting in virtual worlds. But it would require some self restraint and compliance and that are two virtues you won't find very often in MMORPG-players. On the other hand: Complaining about oil "abuse" and a "broken system" is far less stressful, isn't it?

Subscription cancelled due to the following facts:

    - Zenimax implements more bugs from patch to patch
    - Zenimax does not care about the increasing instability of the game. People have more and more crashes Fix of memory bug decreased number of crashes considerably
    - Zenimax has still not fully fixed the fps drops they (!) implemented with patch1.2.3
    - Zenimax does nothing to fix the massive ability lags in PvP
    - Zenimax gives more attention to unnecassary 'content' like dyes for armors than fixing issues
    - In patchnotes Zenimax lies about bugs allegedly fixed
    - Zenimax has no plan as to how balance population in Cyrodiil campaigns
    - Support is ineffective and does not even speak in a way one can linguistically understand

The best solution would actually be to have oils pre-placed on keeps and castles, not sold by merchants. Anyone wishing to operate the oil has to pay on spot. That way no one would be able to abuse them all over the place.

This would follow how the GW2 siege worked for Oil. Not against it though they would need to add Oil spots at all bridges and resources as well.

Oil in GW 2 was pretty much just there to buy time. Only stupid Pugs ever died to oil in that game. I want to fix oil in specific situations, not make it useless.

So what is the problem with building specifically against an oil farm????

Already read it, aswell as Clausewitz and few other similar theme books.

Also read oil description: "doing high dmg to enemy rams and players on ram", doesnt say "doing *** of dmg to everyone everywhere and you should use just that ignoring your abilities". Maybe ZOS should change description?

I wear my stilettos when I pour oil...dont you? :o

I've never really understood how having roasted feet can kill someone. #ZOSLogic

I believe oil should only do damage in the event it is poured "downward".

This game is too far into post-launch beta denial for them to seriously begin considering a self friendly fire mechanic. It's a neat idea that could go all sorts of fascinating ways, but at this point I'd assume that it would only break everything else even further. According to the past 3 months of patch history that is.

    We can dream though! ;)

Oh I agree. Just making a comparison to what was being proposed. Giving oil specific locations would help the problem, but would certainly make Oil not as strategic.

Why only oil? We need friendly fire for every skill that can cause damage ^^

    Follow the logic here.

Your character walks on caltrops: 34 damage.

Your character walks on hot oil: 600 damage

    Explain this.

Are we really debating whether resource towers can be sieged down or not? This is a basic mechanic, ENEMY resource towers can be sieged down, your own cannot. The solution to resource campers is so elegantly simple, just siege their tower down before capping the flag. The only hang up is that the mindless pugs NEVER do that, they always jump on the flag then try to siege their own tower.

Whenever I run in a group we always try to siege the tower first if we see any defenders, but the pugs invariably run up and cap the flag before we can siege it down. The nice thing about that though, is we then get to watch the pugs zerg into the tower and get wiped as they deserve. Please don't take that away from me. :'(

    1. Then when the pugs cap the flag the tower becomes invincible and loaded with caltrops, oil and everything else.

    2. The Pugs not only run in and get wiped quickly but they keep doing it over and over giving the enemies an alliance point farm.

So I am glad you want to see your allies get farmed for points because you like it when enemies get 100k+ AP from your pugs.

Actually I would like 1 or 2 campaigns on the server with friendly fire. Would be more realistic and challenging. As for oil pots, they just need to restrict the area where it can be used.

Oil should not be able to determine friend or foe. Getting hit by oil and in melee at the same time makes no sense.

I'm quite familiar with Sun Tzu and his works are useful for leading in mass PVP. However, not everything pans out. For example he considers it downright inhumane not to use spies (because you can end a war way faster with their intel) and yet crossrealming will be something we shouldn't do in these games.

Sunz Tzu was also completely against besieging fortifications unless absolutely needed. HE would however take an attack on his supply lines extremely seriously. (which is what the resource tower camping ultimately accomplishes)

Of course, Sun Tzu also lived in a world where people only had one life and so would act and react accordingly. Without any real penalty to death people behave quite differently and pursue different goals. There was also no teleportation and resources on both sides were limited instead of infinite like in game. (for instance oil would not be able to pour a billion times).

As well someone pouring boiling oil at their own feet would have died a horrible death. His work is brilliant, the game however is a different battlefield from his and not everything translates. It's just as important to realize what changes of his work as it is to realize what still works.
