Does anyone else find that they are falling behind? (read first)

    Yes
I don't know. Maybe I am missing something, like level 6-7 quests ? I looked, ran back through areas and into every building, I even started another toon figuring I had missed something. But it seems the quests in the area do not advance the toon as fast as they do. Right now I am doing quests 2-3 lvls higher than me, so I am killing everything I see, and running every dungeon several times for XP. Seems they would have put out more quests. Or maybe it's the starting areas, maybe some have more than others ?

So guys, this is my first MMO and I am just starting out (lvl 6). I did a little time on beta so I have the general idea. After reading all these great comments, I'm still a bit confused!

I am still in Auridon and have done several quests; joined Mages & Fighters guilds; found the bank and 2 sky shards, etc.

I love exploring and questing to really know each area well, but the main quest still points me to TALK TO Razum Dar and go to Khenarthi.

    Do I
    A. Go to Khenarthi, then come back to finish my level of quests, etc in Auridon? or
    B. Stay and completely explore as much as possible in Auridon, get a lll the shards, etc before traveling to khenarthi and continuing the main story quests?

Malabal Tor has questing for levels 32-37 so i think you are good to go.

Interesting, I am halfway through Greenshade now, and I arrived at 26, and I am now 30 (with half a zone left to explore and quests to complete) - not sure how others get through a zone way sooner than others (unless group questing / killing everything - and it spreads the XP around?)

Haven't felt so yet, but then again I'm still level 16 and just entered Grahtwood, facing against level 17 mobs. Lets see how it goes from here.

to a point. im not a completionist and will look up quests on the web just to make sure i got 'em all but i do try to explore the entire map before i move on. with that being said im "lagging behind" about 2-3 levels. currently doing 27 quests at lvl 24.

i will admit that i didnt do public or instanced dungeons a lot because they all bugged on me so far and i got fed up with it.

wtf... i voted yes but it says "no" on my post

Hunting down sky shards help you run into a lot of quests. I always do the starter islands. XP scales to your level so you can always go back and do the quests you missed even on the starter islands and get nice xp.

TO break thing up I did the vampire quest when I was level 20. And you can get xp just exploring high level zones and finding shrines.

    Falling behind? Not really.
Frustrated at the lack of available mats with which to craft level appropriate (Green) Gear, yes.

I find that I have to spend 2-3x more time searching for mats to craft with, or mobs to grind for breaking down and obtaining the necessary mats to upgrade items, than attempting to clear the quest content by the skin of my teeth.

In my opinion, there should either be sufficient gear rewarded from quests to keep me properly geared in at least green-level equipment, or material requirement/availability adjustment for crafting.

Other than that, this games easy.
Play end-game WoW content for 8 years, and all of these games are easy.

I reached Grahtwood at level 10. Needless to say, I quickly returned to Auridon where I'm currently still trying to root out any side quests I can find to catch up.

I usually am 1-2 levels ahead when I leave, but I make sure I have everything on the map turn from black to white. The reason why I am not ahead more is, that I don't bother much with dungeons, I go in there, do my achievement and get the skyshard and leave. I also did the group dungeons after I almost outlived them level wise and then they give almost no xp anymore.

I've done everything in Roost, Auridon and almost complete with Gratwood including 4mans and I had to grind one night to get with in a level of the quests I was doing next. I'm level 22 and might not be 23 before I finish Gratwood. I also kill all mobs when doing quests so it seems like something is up with xp gain. It seems like it takes me 4-5 hours to gain a level once I hit 20. I'm doing nothing but questing in that time, although I do stop to listen to the dialog the first time through.

Around level 42 on the EP side on 3 different characters I found myself struggling to get one or two more levels before going from the Rift to Coldharbour.

Other than that, as long as I ride every road to find all the quests and do the soloable instances before moving to the next zone, leveling was fine.

    This is tricky for me...

I'm a veteran of Elder Scrolls games, and of MMORPGs... so when I started in ESO, I took a hybrid view of the game, and decided to just do everything.

I did every single quest, and looked into every single corner I could. I participated in every event, anchor, and dungeon I saw. Sometimes multiple times.

This was the Elder Scrolls approach. Do it all... and Do it multiple times if possible.

In the MMORPG side of it... I realized only certain quests were important, and doing particular quests would keep me at the right level. I don't have to investigate, because I can always come back later and do it then.

I did group dungeons multiple times, and looked into all the puzzles and special areas I could.

I like the Fighters Guild abilities, so when I would encounter a lot of Undead, I stayed in the area a bit longer than necessary to finish up a level in the FG skill set.

At this point, I've outleveled the third zone, and by the time I finish that third zone I will have already outleveled my fourth. I'll probably be able to go straight into the final zone here soon.

Take your time... this might be an MMORPG, but if you treat it like an Elder Scrolls game you should outlevel most things after the first two zones.

On the contrary, if i explore and complete every quest i find, i will often outlevel mobs in the next area or map.

The northern end of Auridon will probably get very difficult for a level 6. I recommend to everyone I speak to that they go back to the starter islands and do the content there, better sooner rather than later. They said the quests will be balanced to your level, but in my experience it's not completely even as you get to higher levels. The whole re-arranged flow of the starter islands was something many people disagreed with - everyone should start on those islands in my opinion.

As for "falling behind", I have never had a problem, and am usually over level if anything. I see lots of people saying they have done everything, but my guess is, they have not. Just because all your map markers are white and "complete" doesn't mean you have done everything...

There are many little side quests that aren't associated with a particular map marker, so though your map may be complete, it doesn't mean you've done everything available. There are even more quests that you might pick up from reading a piece of paper you find on the ground (in which case, there is no black quest indicator). Read books, read notes, check out everything you can!

Just last night I was in a dungeon (Root Sunder Ruins, if anyone wants to know) with some friends, and we came to a large, seemingly empty room. We had already killed the bosses. It didn't seem right to have the large room with nothing. My friends were moving on, but I explored a bit more, and found a single torch in a corner that glowed a different color, and that had an option to "Use" (with E) when I got close. I triggered it, and an entire little mini group event spawned. Piles of skeletons rose out of the ground, culminating in one big boss, which netted us all some stellar xp, unlocked an achievement, and a skill point as well! I'm pretty positive 95% of the people running through that dungeon will never do that event, because they don't take the time to explore things.

And that's the bottom line - take time to explore! People are in such a rush to level up, they are missing stuff all over the place. Why are you in such a hurry anyway?? The game isn't going anywhere. You can rush to the end-game content in a month, and then what? Drop ESO and move on to the next game? Seems like a waste of your good money to not get the full value out of your purchase. But that's just my 2 cents.

    Quite the opposite.
I have explored the entire map & completed every quest I can find in each area. Around Eastmarch I found myself under-leveled & then went back & found a few quests I had missed & finished a few quests & optional bosses that where bugged before the last patch & I'm back to being over-leveled again.
Now I just have to wait for the Our Poor Town quest to be fixed before I can progress.

Im mostly 4 lvl over my enemies, im lvl 46 and fighting lvl40-42 right now, and that since lvl 18.

I see alot of players just rush throw everything and die at the end, they are mostly 3-4 lvl under the mobs but understandable if you try to skip every trash.

So if you kill the trash and do everything in every zone you will have no problems.

I haven't had any issues. I find I can be a level or two behind, but it doesnt hinder my gameplay at all. I've taken my time through quests, crafting, looting and it hasnt put me much behind. Though when I do quest I rarely avoid mobs, at least no more than necessary. Not sure why OP would be so far behind, I havent really tried to be 'at the approriate level' but I'm always fairly close to the recommended levels for quests/zones.

My theory is the number of killed mobs. With so many people questing in the area, the number you need to kill for one quest completion is about one third of what you would have to do if you were playing the game single player. And whilst mob kills give pathetically tiny xp, over 500 quests and 40 levels, they do add up to a few levels here and there. Having said that, right now I am 39 in Reaper's marsh and not dying at all, so all good.

    I think I'm slightly ahead
    - I am leveling with my honey baby and rings of Mara though (we're around 40 now).
    - We never skip any dungeon, quest or world boss.
    - We don't really go out of our way for dolmens (anchosrs), I guess we have 1-2 for each zone.
    - We open chests (they give xp)
    - We never stay to farm fast respawning bosses like we see other people do
