Anyway, I'm a self confessed ES fanboy but that does not change the facts.

WoW has been around for longer than any other MMO. It has the largest number of subs/players achieved by any MMO. It has taken more money than any MMO in existence. It is played in more countries around the world than any other MMO. (need we go on?)

People are too quick to dismiss WoW, but when ESO can claim even half of what WoW has done then they will have achieved the mighty !

    ;)

So highest player base = the best game? I guess by this logic we should label China as the best country in the world since they have the largest population.
Also I can think of 3 MMO that were released before WoW.

Ffxi and everquest were out before wow. Maybe daoc too.

I call BS Everquest and DAoC are WoW clones.... so is Ultima online.

....um.....WoW is a Everquest/DAoC clone. They did it first, each were great for what they did. Eve for PvE, DAoC for RvR. Wow just took tidbits of each gaem and tried to make it their own, that's why I disliked WoW. I even remember hearing some of the casting sounds in WoW and found out they used the identical sounds from DAoC, it made me laugh. WoW had poor PvP in my opinion also.

DAoC will always be known as the game that set the standard in multi realm mass scale PvP. They did it and did it right. To call this game a clone of WoW just makes you look silly.

Ultima Online (UO) is a graphical massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), released on 24 September 1997,[4] by Origin Systems. It was instrumental to the development of the genre, and is still running today.

    ESO
Voted ESO but somehow I still long for old MUDs, those text based games. At times there were hundreds if not thousands players online on some of the best and even though it doesn't sound much today, just imagine a screen filled with text and... what it have looked like when like 50 people are on the same place and..
Don't think there were any gold sellers that time.
    Ah memories.
But I do like ESO for it's nice looking world, music, quests, the friends I have made there and overall feeling. Ah yes the lore. Most I probably dislike the bot thing and of course bugs, but I guess I'm one of the lucky ones(?) not having that much trouble with bugs, yet(?)
Looking forward how ESO will do as it has not been an easy start as we all can see. But, I'm enjoying so far.

    Cheers...

I loved pre-cu and still play it on the emu server. No quests, no levels just skills and the best wildlife simulation.

I have to agree with you that SWG is the best MMO I have ever played. No other game comes even close with regard to crafting complexity or player-based economy. No other game allows you to concentrate 100% on non-combat professions (as in NEVER needing to kill a single mob). And don't even get me started on the whole in-game housing system ...

Question for you: I tried SWGEmu about 3 years ago and whilst it brought back memories, there was so much work left to do it was almost unplayable (sharnaffs were knee-high, vendors not working, most skill lines unavailable, etc). Have things improved now ? If so, I'll definitely give it another go (whilst continuing with ESO of course !).

like Cogo had said about EQ...Wish i could go back in time and freeze my 2 years with LotRO. Loved it.

One of the SWGEmu creators actually plays here, and I chatted with him about it a few weeks ago. Apparently he says that it's nearly fully complete, and currently the server has a constant connection of 3k people on it. I didn't think that was a lot until I researched it and found that the original game only held about 3k players per server. All in all I hear it's still going strong and very playable. I was thinking of trying it, but I'm scared I'd get hooked again.

For SWG you really need to stipulate before and after Sony implemented the NGE because they were two different games. Before NGE it was one of the most entertaining and comprehensive MMO's I'd played, after NGE it was a steaming turd.

NGE is what got the company in trouble and forced to refund all the players the cost of the last expansion + game time for anyone that asked. You do NOT advertise and sell an expansion, then the day AFTER the expansion goes live completely change the entire game without letting the players know. That was one of the stupidest things I have ever seen a company do. It was an entirely no game after that. How can you go from "Be whatever you want, no matter what, and you can play a Jedi after months and months to years of prep work and difficult trials" to "You can only play these 9 classes with no sub classing, and Jedi is one of them". It's like the company wanted to kill the game the quickest way possible.

I really think there needs to be an official classification system for online games. I see people all the time comparing EVE, LOL and DOTA to mmo's. I don't consider those mmos. I guess they are technically Massively Multiplayer and Online but I always used mmo as a shortcut for saying mmorpg, which none of those games are.

And while theyre at it they can think up a new name for wow and swtor type mmos maybe ADDMMO? since the people that love them don't have the attention span to play a real mmo where it takes you longer than a week to get to end game and being stupid or an a-hole has consequences.

I played pre-cu, CU, and NGE in SWG. They all had their ups and downs. The biggest problem with the NGE wasn't so much the game play (hell, they added atmospheric flight and air/ground PVP) but how it was handled. Yes, dumbing things down and making Jedi easy to get was not cool, but the underlying problem was a customer service one.

I think it should be a case study for anybody that makes an MMO.

One of the richest and most respected people on the server. Had a couple of Hospitals on different planets. Master Doctor/Surgeon. People all over came for my buffs. Had special arrangements with the biggest hunting group and always had 95%+ quality Avian meat for my formulas. I didn't ever really fight in this game. I only actually killed things the first year or so I played, the rest I hung out in Cantina's and threw credits around like a boss. Just the idea that I can play a MMORPG and not actually have to kill a single mob and have a good time was something special.

....That's right people. I was a Respected Doctor....THAT SOLD THE HIGHEST QUALITY DRUGS! I will always miss you, SWG :*(

Never any love for the most innovative(even by today's standards) game ever devised called Asheron's Call. Graphically not the greatest, but they were the 1st to truly let you build the kind of character YOU wanted, they had a monarchy system that was great and rewarded or punished based on your recruitment skills and instincts(till as usual, exploiters got their hands on it), a unique magic system at launch where you had to create your own spells by combining different elements(till the whiners got that nerfed), making your own regular and elemental arrows using a combination of alchemy and fletching skills(again whiners got that nerfed in a different way) and I loved my house where I could display all my trophies and with no bank in those days, was the only true way to store items.
And on top of all that, unless the changes were HUGE, they didn't come out with ex-pack's every few months preferring to treat their players right by constantly adding new content and plot/story every month. THAT'S what it meant to pay a sub in those days unlike EQ or even UO or the majority of games these days, and to this day, they still add content on a monthly basis from what I was told by an old friend who still plays. What turbine lacked, other than a good PR department, was a recognized brand. Sony was a huge brand and still is so EQ practically sold itself. I didn't like EQ, not because it was bad, I simply preferred AC to it. You can produce garbage like WoW, and because it's Blizzard, which was a huge brand then, people flocked to it and were blinded to just how bad the game actually was. And don't waste your words WoW fanboys flaming me for my opinion, you'll simply be ignored.

I picked wow simply because no matter the haters and what they say about it is well was I haven't played it for a long time the best and most popular mmo of all time reason I say that most popular well self explanatory you cant say it wasn't while being honest with yourself. Wow also did a lot of things right things you are seeing in all other mmos. group finder came from wow, the tank dps heal system perfected by wow I have yet to see it any better then how it was implemented in wow. love it or hate it you cant take away the fact that a lot of the stuff you see in mmos since came from wow. Not to mention wow made mmos popular. wasn't the first mmo just the first mmo that was as popular as it got. In other words wow made mmos mainstream.
