Which MMO is the best?

Life is the best MMORPG for me, so far. You gotta play it smart, because there is no rezzing if you die, and you are constantly learning how to interact with the PCs/NPCs.

The quests on the other hand, could use a little sprucing up.

So many great MMOs left off this list. Some that are missing are Everquest 2, Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, Ultima Online, and the Secret World to name a few.

My pick is definitely the Secret World. It's the longest I've ever played an MMO without taking a break. The story and average player maturity are top notch!

I voted for ESO but that is only because Star Citizen has not been released yet. Though I will need a new PC before I can even begin to think I can actually play SC...the poly count in that game is nearly ridiculous and its still pre, pre, alpha..

Anyway, I'm a self confessed ES fanboy but that does not change the facts.

WoW has been around for longer than any other MMO. It has the largest number of subs/players achieved by any MMO. It has taken more money than any MMO in existence. It is played in more countries around the world than any other MMO. (need we go on?)

People are too quick to dismiss WoW, but when ESO can claim even half of what WoW has done then they will have achieved the mighty !

    ;)

While I enjoyed WoW when I played it, I really think its success has done harm to the MMO-genre. The push a button gain a level illness spawned by WoW has created a sense of entitlement in some gamers. This produces an environment where challenging or creative MMOs flounder even if they are moderately popular. These games are seen as failures if they do not have the ten million subscribers needed to be the next WoW killer.

Players who grow tired of WoW move on to a new game, negatively change the game environment through their entitlement, and then go back to WoW when the next WoW installment drops. This vicious desire to find the next WoW has perverted several games that I found interesting and unique originally.

I popped my cherry on SWG, but I still love the sandbox style of that game. It had its ups and downs, but I think that is still my favorite. ESO and EVE are probably tied for second.

There are a few key things that make me really love MMOs. First is a truly player-driven economy. Looting stuff while leveling is okay, but I think all end game items should be crafted. This makes crafting a truly integral part of the game instead of second-hand mini game.

The other is non-instanced, open world PVP. I've always had the most fun when my team was out numbered and we had to use tactics, group movement, and communication to fight. More often than not, we'd win. The fixed-group instanced stuff gets boring because it's ultimately a numbers game. There will always be optimal character builds and team builds that out perform.

I have yet to PVP in ESO yet, but from what guildies have told me, it's very much an open world thing, so I look forward to that.

So.....just because WoW got the biggest Numbers means Its the best MMO for you....?

    What a strange Comment....

Justin Bieber sold more than Nirvana so Justin is better, is the klogic Caduryn is using. Appeal to Popularity.

I personally think UO is the best MMO because even though it went to total crap, it stood really strong. In the age of 2 year MMO's, UO has stood strong since what, 1997-1998?

The only flaw with UO is being owned by EA who has none of UO's interests in mind, and cans them with minimal budget and makes stupid design choices just like in every EA game.

I wonder if ESO will be one of those like UO or ESO? One that stands the ages or just a "quick in and out" scheme?

    Within; Without.

Why, wow is a good game or not people would not play it for years, unless they are idiots.

On the other hand its a game who focus on quantity over quality and spawns a decade, look at a Tauren then at a Worgen or Panda. Not all features is as well thought out.
Grinding just make you go in circles.

So highest player base = the best game? I guess by this logic we should label China as the best country in the world since they have the largest population.
Also I can think of 3 MMO that were released before WoW.

I've still got a soft spot for Star Trek Online... it's had issues, but the space combat is so much fun.

After that, I really miss Hellgate: London, after the patch that opened up Nightmare for anyone who'd hit 20, it became this really fantastic procedural oldschool doom type shooter, mowing down hordes of enemies.

I have not voted as I like WoW & Eso. Wow has a lot to give main reason is they have had a lot of years to refine the game ( and they still stuff up ) but, Eso is new out of the ground and I am seeing a lot of promise. Really looking forward to seeing what they come up with in the future.

I always have to smile if a new breed post´s stuff that is obviously so wrong, yet they believe its right ;)

Ultima is the MMO which has been alive and kicking for almost 17 years now and my favorite. Wow is in its 10th year by the way. Besides that, UO is still based on a sub - has I believe 20 active servers and many free shards + constant new updates.

Its a Sandbox MMO, where you can do everything you want. Build a house or a castle, open shops, tame animals, become a knight or a wizard, a fletcher ...

This however isn't the oldest and longest running MMO, this should be "The Realm online".

No bias in the outcome of this poll, I'm sure. ;-)

That aside, for me, "best" in terms of design and mechanics as suited to my personal preferences and play style is what I voted for, but "best" as in "I'm really having more fun with this now than with any other game, because it's new and shiny," well... that'd be ESO, which is of course why I'm on these forums at all.

Oh, and also, why is EvE not listed as an option?

For questing: The Secret World (they went all out for immersion, going as far as creating webpages for fictional entities of the game world for you to look up for quests.). ESO comes in a close second.
    For combat: TERA
    For graphics quality: TERA
    For character design: Aion
For customization: Star Trek Online and Champions Online
    For housing: Star Wars Galaxies
For character classes: Star Wars Galaxies (pre-NGE)
For subject matter: The Secret World
    For crafting: Star Wars Galaxies
For story: Star Wars the Old Republic.
    For roleplaying: Star Wars Galaxies
For variety of activities/gameplay: Star Wars Galaxies

Right now ESO has a good balance of the things I like in an mmorpg.
The only other mmorpg I'd be interested in is Everquest Next, but SoE seems more focused on Landmark now to really know.

    • Tremendous options for character development with 20+ classes and being able to take 4 disciplines from 50+ options.
    • Well balanced
    • Rich lore with great race variety
    • Awesome guild camaraderie

    The secret world of course

Have only discovered it recently but have been blown away by it. There's just something about references to the modern world that's refreshing. Original npcs, each quest has a full cutscene with superb acting, having quests where you have to think and research meta websites or watch YouTube channels of NPCs. Regular organized events tied to world news. heck some NPCs have active twitter accounts ;) and a huge bonus for mature friendly players. Every time I've asked how to defeat xyz 3-4 players always offer to come help. A must for world of darkness fans

If we look behind us though EQ1 was intense and fun in ways no modern mmo has come close to imitating. Just basic concepts like factions, pulling mobs, downtime, raids etc.

I also loved Vanguard, had great ideas and concepts like diplomacy.

Other honorable mentions: SWG pre nge, ultima online, lotro, heck I'll even throw SOE in there, I do enjoy it :)

I think deep down we all love our first mmo and will never have that rush again ;)

And I agree that wow has attracted many more people to the hobby, but also 'dumbed' it down. MMOs became more casual, add more convenience and instant gratification that have become standards in modern MMOs that companies don't dare stray too far from, unfortunately.
