I thought the original EQ up to the Luclin expansion was the best. It is by far my favorite mmo up to this point. I was one that liked the penalties upon death and the fact that travel wasnt instant. It made you think about what you had to do and you were a lot less wreckless.

Right on, and then came Plains of Power where you had to do "trials" to get into the plains, and then even if you were lucky enough to get there the mobs where so hard that alot of players just gave up, mostly only the Uber guilds and the hardcore players remained after that , which was about the same time as WoW was released.

Well, since it had SWG and not SWTOR, I guess this is 'at all' since SWG has been shut down, so I will cay City of Heroes was the best. And would be if it was still up. Great character customization with costumes independent of gear. It was easy to jump into and made you feel like a badass, able to take on tens of mooks to fight and succeed. And the community was amazing, and the RP was great.

Your list of MMOs is severely lacking. Where are the Korean MMOs? Japanese MMOs? Where are the relics that are still running (Ultima, EverQuest)?

From the list I'd say it's a toss up between ESO and FF14 as both have really strong gameplay. Neither get my vote, though, because I don't think they qualify as being "the best".

... Not yet anyways. The one that has the most potential is ESO, I believe... not to mention it's get bonus points for having a Mac client.

I'm quite partial to Eve, although I have to say that ESO has made quite the refreshing change of pace and scenery.
Even on the internet, clear communication is important; it can be the difference between "helping your Uncle Jack off a horse" and "helping your uncle jack off a horse"; the difference between "knowing your s***" and "knowing you're s***".

Some great games listed, some are missing IMO. I did pick SWG. I had so much fun playing that game. The guild functions, player housing as many people have stated were just so fun. Becoming a jedi you really felt like you accomplished something Pre-NGE.

I just enjoy good games and hope this one continues to grow I love ES games.

LMAO at the star wars galaxies votes. The game would still be open if it was good. There were serious issues. The concept was great, but the game wasn't.

Note: I've played every one of the MMO's in the list. I don't play WoW anymore and probably will never play it again. But it still stands as the best one I've played. EQ and DAoC come up in 2nd/3rd. Not sure who would make an MMO list without DAoC or UO in it.

I think it might soon become Darkfall ; might. Dynamic combat, immersion, openworld PvP; ability mixing (new, finally!), sieging/holdings are more relevant. They claim that they will add siege engines later.

Of course, Darkfall is really not for everyone (hard as hell alone; grindy; very hardcore full loot; difficult FPS style [challenging though!]; no lore/quest/not RP).

City of Heroes/Villians - mentoring, bases, auction house, day jobs, maps - pretty much everything in that game is a template that others should use for improvement
SWTOR - story - no other game comes close to the story or the character development, not to mention lightsabers :D
    FFXI - grouping, co-operative play, cross-culture, multi-platform, epic story

The "best"... that is one subjective question you got there mate.

Still , i do think ESO is a bad MMO , just like it is a bad ES game.

For reason the end result is good, even if the devs have a LONNNNG journey to do before i can even think this game is the best anything.

    Scarlet Blade.

The ... er ... scenery ... is very nice.

You made me laugh...I played Scarlet Blade a year and though I loved the PVP its such a badly managed and pay to win game. As soon as ESO opened I abandoned my level 39 Sentinel with her mostly unique gear and major mech to play ESO. I haven't gone back to Scarlet Blade once even though the PVP was a lot of fun at times, at least before the major lag set in. I really don't miss Scarlet Blade at all but I do regret the money I spent on the cash shop while I played...I bought so many pet hunger hacks to keep my pet out and level him. :(

It's a poor poll that doesn't have EQ1, EQ2, EVE, LoTRO, or SW:TOR in it (even though SW:TOR was mutilated beyond cure after Free-to-Pay-to-Play Cartel Madness set in.)

EQ1 up through Luclin was the best MMO ever, without question. Others have had some lovely parts; probably SWG for a brief time rivaled EQ1 but in a different way. EVE in its own ways is remarkable.
    VR14 Templar, VR14 DK, VR8 DK, VR7 NB, VR1 Sorcerer;

Anyway, I'm a self confessed ES fanboy but that does not change the facts.

WoW has been around for longer than any other MMO. It has the largest number of subs/players achieved by any MMO. It has taken more money than any MMO in existence. It is played in more countries around the world than any other MMO. (need we go on?)

People are too quick to dismiss WoW, but when ESO can claim even half of what WoW has done then they will have achieved the mighty !

    ;)

I thought the question was, what IS the best rather than what WAS. Just because of the size of something does not make it better. Avatar is the highest earning film. Doesn't make it the best. U2 are the highest earning musical act.... Oh my, need I say more?

Going back to WoW, while you are free to have whatever opinion you want I fail to see why wow would be better than ESO. Graphics? nope, combat? nope, Story telling? nope. Maps? nope

In WoW's defense it is a pale reflection of it's former self these days. If I could take the Story telling, graphics, Lore, art style and professions from ESO and the open world and PVP of WoW, but replacing arena's with cyrodiil, then you would have a great game. Hell, throw in the foundry from Neverwinter.

Right now, I think ESO is the best of the bunch simply because it stands the best chance at reaching even greater potential.

I think the game needs additional depth to truely make its mark. But, unlike the majority of MMO's released over the last few years, I think it has the foundation to do that. To obtain a few "skyrim-esque" traits and the ability to obtain some of the REALLY good traits of some MMO's (such as customisable housing, more depth to the economic / crafting synergy etc, etc).

But of course, if that potential isn't actually realised, then it will probably end up on the mediocre pile. People will play it, and then move on within a few months.

The time frame is skewed. Do we mean currently? Ever? Best? Best at what? The most fun you have had? Did the most for the genre? Pressed limits?

The question is waaaaayyy to open ended
