    FFXI

No game had such a great story or OST. It was old school and the community was brutal but helpful, kinda Yin/Yang.

Grouping was forced from early on and until the very last couple of years where things went a bit more free form.

hated and misunderstood by many but wonderful to the faithful who stuck with it and reaped the rewards.

Best OST in a game ever, nothing comes close to this day.

It is almost dead now though and not worth starting.

FFXI: You had WOW and ESO, but FFXI was out before WOW. My top pick is FFXI. The game shines even more that I play ESO and see how they overcome so many basic things that ESO seems so lost on.

Not just bugs, but even character progression.

And for PvP and world, AION. Loves flying from the zones, even if it was just to see them from above. And it was cool for PvP in that regard.

Warhammer public quest should been what the skulls are like in ESO. Few easy mobs we have now, but for love of god, make some mega boss where we need more then four people. I so sick of soloing mega bosses by bind nuke.

FFXI has done so many updates in past six to eight months it is drastically changed to update itself in a modern time. They are even redoing the whole UI. Something we wish ESO would do. Only thing they won't do is a graphics over hall.

    Some basic examples:

    Numpad to walk and move
Auto lock focus camera that moved when you did.

Can be jobs: with the way the veteran content is, It been great if you could of changed jobs all on same character to enjoy all you have done, and will do.

Could use Alt 1-5 for weapon one
    Control 1-5 for weapon two

The "best" MMO is whichever one I am currently engaged in. At this point in time, it is ESO; however, in the past it has been other games. When it no longer becomes the best, I move on to the next best...

Everquest. Best MMO ever made. Longest lived. Had WAY to hardest challenges. Huge difference in classes and a lot of races with each having a useful racial ability. Factions in cities depending on your actions or your race.

And the most beautiful thing ever in any MMO. Raiding. NOTHING beats Everquest raids. 50-70 people to control, work together, unite and then ALL loot was public, hence the DKP system was born and worked quite well.

Today EQ is to old and not what it once was. But nothing even comes close to the detail, difficulty, different roles and tactics needed in EQ raids. For you who are not familiar with Everquest class system, there was a HELL of a lot more then Tank/healer/dps. And each class had "epic" quests they could quest for....and these where EPIC. Not every single damn highlvl had them.

I wish I had a timemachine and went back to 1999. Memory wipe and started EQ all over again.

Could not have said it better myself. EQ Did it best and did it right.

To me, SWG will always be the gold standard. I've never seen a chat system that was its equal. The storyteller system took event creation to heights I've also never seen again. I played at launch and after the NGE, and I still miss that game.

Fallen Earth was also engaging back in its day, especially pre FTP.

This poll is stupid, EVE online remains the only true MMO sandbox and is probably one of the most unique and notable MMO's of all time and you didn't list it because it doesn't fit your archetype.

I have played many MMO games over the years, the best was Ultima Online back in its day, its open play and freedom was amazing, now ESO takes the cake with its open playstyle and beauty. But if I needed one good thing to complain about in ESO, its the lack of "fasion" I am a roleplayer, and would love some "downtime" gear

I picked ESO on a tentative basis... if they add all the things they have on "the list", this will be the best MMO hands down, and will last years to come. If they continue to take their sweet time addressing game breaking bugs, dealing with bots, and adding more content, WoW will regain it's throne in my MMO collection.

I mean seriously I can't stand EVE but you have to show some respect for a world where persistent player vs player with the ability steal everything, build everything is the way many people play.

That's unique in the genre and not listing it makes you dishonest.

I chose ESO because despite it's many flaws, the thing that matters to me most in an MMO (of the fantasy style) is the richness of it's world, and Bethesda has nailed a level of detail unprecedented in the genre.

No big empty boring rolling hill fields with nothing in them.

There definitely should have been more to this list but my favorite happened to be on it. SWG was my all time best mmo experience ... not because it was the best at anything other than being fun for me! No mmo since then has inspired me to play as much as I possibly could every day.

The pvp in Warhammer Online had me playing constantly also but only for a short time. As soon as the first new zone hit pvp just kinda died with the rest of the game.

I can't pick a best one. When I played CoH, CoH was the best. Then I burned out on it and got bored with CoH and consequently, CoH kinda sucked (to play, at least). Same thing happened with EQ, LotRO, and Rift, and even Fallen Earth. They all had qualites such that when I was playing them, they were the best games around, until I would get bored with them or friends stopped playing them. Right now, ESO is the best. I don't know if it still will be the best a year from now. But it's the only MMO I want to play, so yes, it's great. And there are games that aren't on the list simply because I never formed that kind of an attachment to the game (WoW, EQ2, GW2, and several others)

Even a flawed game like Fallen Earth had a lot of great qualities, but like a lot of games, they suck when your friends leave them.

The best game should ALWAYS be the game you are playing right now. If it isn't why the heck are you playing it instead of the better game?

Can't really say which one is the "best" to many titles of some really awesome games (some still going some that have died a horrible premature death) to actually call just ONE the best. for probably some of MOST favorites I've ever played the list would be (in no particular order from top to bottom, or, bottom to top):
Vindictus, EvE, EQ2, Vanguard, Ryzom (rest in peace :'( ), Anarchy Online, Entropia Universe, Guild Wars (one and two)....OMG there's just so many! :s

Honorable mention goes to Meridian 59 being simply because it was the one that started it all....and I've been gaming ever since.

ESO? Really? Already? How can you know?

Let's examine this. Are you just teenagers too young to ever have played other mmos or even old ES games?

Some said it has good quests. You must have never played a previous ES game. The quests are too fast with little to no development. You don't have time to get to know the characters and you're done. You still fetch crap.

Dungeons? Sure Oblivion's dungeons weren't great, but this game goes backwards from Skyrim's dungeons. They're worse than Oblivion's and they use a lot of the same meshes (yes the textures look better), of the ruins. They're short, tiny and obvious. You see the exit tunnel every time you go in. Look at Tom's hardware review. They're all copies of each other.

Grouping, you like the grouping in ESO? You can't group! That's not an MMO.

Textures and immersion: The NPC talking is a major step back. They move their mouths like they are "gibberishing." Where's the great facial expressions and mouth movements. No head tracking either. I don't think my character even knows he's in the world. Many of the textures in the game look like crap. Washed out. Overall the world is pretty, but it's also much of the same area: forests or slight swampy. The volcano areas... well, I fell asleep. Had to go back to the forest area. Ok I'm a little older and need my nap. lol. I'm not that old dang it!

Almost every other game listed is better than ESO at something. Quests, grouping, pvp etc. and many games that weren't listed. Zmax has a lot of work to do.

I'm guessing, and I maybe wrong, but the ESO fanboys will get bored quick. When you get to level 50 and there's nothing more to do, or when you start seeing how dull the questing is and that you can't play with your friends in groups because you can't see them unless you are at the exact same moment in the quest, you will move on.

I've noticed that about the younger generations and that they will defend whatever they are into at the time with viciousness until they get bored. Then off to defend the next thing when the "new" wears off. I'm not putting down teenagers, as you are our future. Just making an observation. The game is new, and like all teenagers (yes stats show teens are the biggest pop in games) you jump on new stuff like a fat kid on cake. You're quick to impress but also quick to turn off.

The many bad reviews for this game are bad for a reason. Folks this game has problems. Not just the bots and bugs...It's like the developers didn't look at previous MMOs and what made them good or bad. They didn't listen to fan forums on what players wanted. Without the voice acting and pretty graphics (the meshes suck really bad by the way but you'd have to be a modder to see that), this game is an old worn carpet of pre 2010 MMOs.

I want it too succeed. I really do. My favorite gaming franchise is ES. God I loved Oblivion.

Everquest 2 was the biggest bang for my buck. Incredibly deep if you spent time with it. Loved the crafting system - I loved upgrading spells / abilities. Great quests, great storylines, and I loved the Heritage quest items that gave you relics from Everquest 1. Also - the best player and guild housing system I have ever seen.
