No the plex system is slightly different. 1 player that needs ingame gold buys PLEX for real money, then the next player with a lot of ingame money needs a sub and buys the PLEX. PLEX is the others player subscription. So it allows some players to play EVE without actually paying the subscription fee by using PLEX, whereas player1 can spend extra money to increase his gold resources. Not really P2W.

Well considering that no mmo in the last 5-10 years hasnt gone f2p, it is a reasonable assumption this will as well. How would you like to see it done? Lots of paywalls, or lots of p2w store stuff?

Quite a few haven't actually, starting with FFXIV

It did for 2 years before rerelease. It still may as its subs are dismal right now

I laughed at this. Next time do some research before making absurd/untruthful comments.

Yea, the second this goes F2P I am gone. Pay to win is not my style, I prefer to win on my own terms.... Not very frequently. but at least I'm not always suspicious that the other guy is just dumping money into the game.

Accomplishment, Equipment Envy. Everything is gone at that point. I would prefer to play Backgammon with my grandma. At least I can keep an eye on her cheating.

Well considering that no mmo in the last 5-10 years hasnt gone f2p

Actually Eve Online hasn't gone f2p and they just hit 11 years.

Also Dark Age of Camelot, hitting 13+ years old is not f2p or p2w- but the poster will conclude they are out of his 5-10 year range. Only 2 known games went F2P- Sw:ToR and War: Online- both horrible games built on hype. Also very bandwaggony games.

Rift, Age of Conan, and Tera also went F2P, however all were also out for a good while before that happened. CoV/CoH also went the F2P route for a bit before closing if I remember right.. Pretty much any MMO that launched in the 5-10 year range has.. so that's at least right. However very very few, if any save for the two you listed, went F2P within the first year.. which is where this thread majorly jumps the gun. Add to that Zeni doesn't seem keen on the F2P idea and I don't see it happening within the next few months.

To add to the list of old games that are still sub based. Ultima Online :)

Update: After checking, even Warhammer Online was a few years before shutting down, and it looks like the F2P version of the game never officially launched. It got shut down in open beta in 2013. So.. that leaves the only example I can think of where a game went F2P within the first year of it's release to be SWTOR.

Second update: Someone has pointed out to me that SWTOR actually lasted 13 months. So it also did not go F2P in under a year. TSW seems to be the only game that has.

You forgot Star Trek Online... even though they still have a subscription model because of the people who shelled out for a lifetime sub, they added a F2P model on top of it.

Wooow you tell me that SWTOR have good customer support i think NOT i post in SWTOR customer support part on there forum and that was 3 month ago and still have not got answer from there support team at lest you get answer from Zenimax's support team with in 48 hours by email it is more then i can say about SWTOR support team. Beside SWTOR have more lag issues then ESO have and both company have there server in NA.

F2P Would really hurt the balance of Cyrodil. A lot of serious pvp'ers would either A) Become microtransaction addicts or B) Quit the game or C) Simply play disinterestedly. B and C are bad options. I don't know if they're going to do it, since Cyrodil is such a big part of the game.

ESO will never be str8 F2P. It may end up like GW2, where you buy the game, and then theres no sub. But I doubt ESO will turn into a full on free game where u can download and play at no cost.
Why? It's doing far worse than SWTOR was when it had to go F2P (and then it started making way more money when it did). I'm not saying the game will be free to play tomorrow, but after six more months of Zenimax's poor patches, balancing, big fixes, and customer support...

How do you know the game is doing so poorly? You have no idea how they are doing. As far as I know ZOS themselves have not release any information on the subject.

On the note that they are doing bad it is because of the failed implementation of Veteran Ranks which FORCE people to quest through the other factions to level up at any decent rate which isn't what people want to do when they want to play their faction and then PVP and do PVE things with friends like craglorn dungeons etc.

In so e ways wow is. Buy a blizard game they give 6 to 12 month wow free. Basicily ftp. They did that with diablo 3

The misinformation in this one is strong.

You cannot buy any Blizzard game and get that much time in WoW. It's never happen. Best you'll get is the standard free month that comes with all new purchases of the base game.

Personally I believe you're thinking of the Annual Pass from back in 2011. Pretty much it was sign a contract saying you wouldn't let your sub last for a year and you got the following:
-Guaranteed access to the Mists of Pandaria beta at some point
-A free digital copy of Diablo 3 upon release
    -Exclusive in game mount

That's it. You were still paying for twelve months of WoW. How you paid for it was up to you: monthly, 3/6 month blocks, game cards. Hell if you got free time out of recruit a friend then that was fine as well. The only requirement was that you kept it active for twelve months.

Now the people who pre-ordered the collector's edition of D3 were more than a bit unhappy with said promo for a free copy of the game. As compensation Blizzard did give them four free months of WoW if they were taking part in the Annual Pass and entered in a CE D3 key to upgrade their free copy (essentially the price of buying the standard version of D3 which is also the price for four months of most MMO subs).

As someone who took part in that promo I felt it was an awesome deal. Sadly however as is typical with the extremely vocal and unpleasable portion of the fanbase things got wrecked. People apparently couldn't read the fine print, weren't pleased with it for whatever reason, were angry that they didn't get day one beta access, ect. Blizzard eventually let people break off the contract in exchange for giving up their copy of D3, beta access and the mount. Add to the fact that people treated the beta like an extended demo. Most didn't even seem to grasp the concept of a beta, didn't bother to report bugs and instead complained loudly that MoP's beta was broken and unfinished.

In short Blizzard's experiment essentially ensured that they'd never do an Annual Pass again. As far as claiming WoW is F2P you COULD make the argument that it's F2P in a sense. There is a free starter version but you're extremely limited in what you can do and there is a cap of level 20.

Anyway this was a bit of a drift off topic but I felt it had to be addressed. In the future I would personally recommend not speaking "facts" when in reality it's misinformation.

As for the actual topic on hand it's hard to say. There's only a handful of MMO's that run subs and could really be considered mainstream or widely known. I honestly feel ESO is doing much better than people are claiming but without the actual sub numbers it's very hard to say. Honestly I think if ESO is in the 1-2 million range then it'll be fine for some time.

Don't laugh. People tend to forget that WoW is the exception to the rule. I know it's hard to believe but before WoW came around MMO's with more than one million players were just downright unheard of.

As for the whole F2P argument I'm with most the people here. If it goes B2P I'll be a bit worried but likely still play. If it goes full on F2P with a premium option I may dabble a bit but I'll likely be out for good. F2P was what ruined Star Trek Online for me and honestly I feel that while it may keep the game running for a while I feel that in the long run it's essentially that nail in the coffin that says the time for that MMO is limited.

Maybe it was a promo for asia only. But many of my students I taught bought diablo 3 and got a one year wow game sub pass.

I expect to continue to sub for a long time based on what I've seen/experienced to date. However, I'll certainly cancel my sub *if* the game adopts a F2P model during the first 2 years. From my perspective, it's meaningless to theorize what one may do 2+ years from now.

No, I had to buy a WoW sub for one year, and I got Diablo 3 for free, plus a WoW mount.

EDIT: Just to note that I bought the delux Diablo 3 edition for the WoW pet, and got three months free on my WoW sub.
