You expect industries to learn over time and from competitors. On top of that plenty of the staff here came from other MMOs and have industry experience. Bots, gold sellers, stolen accounts etc have been an industry concern for a long time now. To be as unprepared as ESO is a big part of why people are pissed off. It would be like a new car manufacturer releasing cars with no air bags or seat belts.

Thanks for that pointer -- the last time I checked, there was nothing. I do not expect them to outline exactly what they're doing in detail; just acknowldgment is good. And an authenticator would make my husband and myself feel even safer to log in and play.

As for "The Road Ahead" pointer", meh. Old news. Things have escalated wildly since then.

    And this --
Just flailing around with generalistic nonsense adds nothing to the debate of this thread or forum for that matter.

I've been participating a lot in the botting threads, providing information about how botters work in MMO environments based on long experience playing these games (which a lot of people on these forums seem to lack, and therefore there are a ton of misconceptions around as to what can be done about the problem.) I don't "flail around" about this, I speak specifically according to my experiences -- and no, I don't refresh the "known issues" thread every hour or even every day. Will you be less of a snark if I promise to amend my ways?

I've gotten ads for gold sellers on my real email account which was only given to Zeni when I signed up. It is not used in the game anywhere. Looks to me like their servers have been hacked because they had to get my email from billing / registration.

If they get your email from in game, then I garantee you there would be million posts about that here.

There are several ways to get your email and spam you. Most commonly is if you joined some forum/guild whatever site and used your prime email there.
Its sad but true that hackers targeting sites where you need to provide an email, which are a lot. Then they spam and/or SELL the list of real emails to spammers.

Also, and please, this is not putting any blame on you. You could have a simple keylogger and that way the vermin who are using your adress has it.

As a diehard fan, I could not agree more. If TES wasn't in the tile, I'd have quit during beta.

ZOS has made some glaring mistakes, but I’m willing to support them for a while longer. In the meantime I tell my friends to wait three months before making the purchase.

Hehe, I really liked SWTOR, hell, still have the authenticator on my phone. In reality, while an authenticator would be good for added security, the game sends you a code and prevents you from logging in if you login from a new IP, so do we NEED an authenticator, or at least need it right now?

Yeah, those cost money. But MMOs that offer this option usually have a free phone app that does the trick even better (besides being free, it's one less gadget to keep up with).

Below are some of the in-game issues we are currently working on fixing. Note that this list is not everything we’re working on, just the highest priority ones.

    General
Botters - We are continuing to improve our process and security behind-the-scenes for combating botters in-game. This is an ongoing work in progress that we are fully dedicated to. Please keep in mind that we cannot go into detail on the various actions we’re taking to combat botting, as doing so could put our game and security at risk.

Yeah, what's the matter with these people???!!!

It was clearly indicated in Subsection 567.997B, of Subparagraph 45B, of Section 4A, of Update Notes 97.3, of Developer Notes 34.7!!!!!

No dummy, in the sticky notes. Where all games put updates and info.

Yes, but I don't have a smart phone, and I'm not forking out £200 for one just to get an authenticator.

I want a key fob Authenticator, like Blizzards, which you can buy in UK (unlike Swtor's)

I'm pretty sure the things you mentioned are build into cars because by now, it is required by law that they have them built in. The are no laws regulating MMO authentication security, yet. And pray that there ever won't be, because security would end up to be only a very small part of regulation.

ESO did come with an IP address verification system by email, however. Try to log in from a wildly different geolocation, and you need to enter a randomly generated security code sent to your registered email.

And while I'm sure that of course knowledge and experience get carried around by industry veterans, the implementation of two factor authentication (TFA) requires two things: the licensing of the necessary RSA software, and an infrastructure in place for distribution of hardware tokens, actual authentication coupled with accounting, and error handling for customers. Both need time and money.

Maybe TFA wasn't just high enough on their priority list in the face of getting the game out of the door. Maybe it's in the pipeline. Maybe, if enough people ask persistently, it will get implemented soon(TM). Be sure to keep an eye out for any announcement in that direction.

Phones have had apps since long before smartphones came out.

There was no app market because the stupid propietary SO system (SOs they throwed and made every 3 months for a new phone) pushing community devs out of it, but thats all. There always have been Java apps for many of them tho, wich worked cross-platforms (its java, after all) given some similarities (screen res).

Logging in from your pc requires authentication already, unless that was removed?

I have nothing against authenticators, i had one for wow, and used the mobile version for swtor at some point. So i wouldn't mind one for eso, but I don't see that much need considering my first line.

What would help ppl stop having their accounts hacked would be to use appropriate passwords. Unique passwords for their accounts, including caps, numbers and special characters.

Seat belts and air bags were added before they became law. Why...because it was a selling point, offered extra safety, and became a competitive feature. I'm sorry but to launch an MMO in this day and age with as little in place as ESO has for the huge issue that is Botting/hacking etc. is in "my opinion" simply wrong. Of course at this point the customer base will decide for them if this was a good or bad move

I think you are right. It was not enough of a priority/to much investment for them so they launched as is

Really tho, I was wondering if they planned on having an authenticator available for this game. Probably don't need one tho with the advanced security they have and all dot dot dot.

Yes, you're right. If I remember correctly, security features like ABS and air bags were first introduced only in top-of-the-range vehicles, because the (then) expensive electronic systems didn't have as great an impact on total cost as in cheaper/more affordable models. But of course, they raised the awareness on traffic security, which led to more demand, which led to mass production, which led to cheaper prices. Nowadays they're everywhere by default, and cars missing "basic" or "taken for granted" security features would be quite unsellable. There's a niche for fun cars which deliberately lack them, but you may be forbidden to use them on public roads.

Anyhow. With internet security awareness on the rise, even MMOs can no longer afford to ignore the topic. IP authorization may be too little for today's demands. I'm curious how things will develop.

I was always under the impression that account authenticators were not mandatory to access your account. I've never had an authenticator before and have never had a problem accessing my account. It just adds added security if you want it. It wouldn't solve anything bot related.
