Idea about increase the performance in templar tanks PvE

Hi guys,

I started tanking in a templar (I've experience with warden and dk) and the thing is that I miss is a decent burst heal. Templars have honor the death for example but you can cast it on other group member and in vet/hm can cause a wipe really easy so for this reason it is not used.

The thing templars have is a decent shield (my character can reach more than 11k) but there comes the inconvenient... You cannot mitigate the damage of the shield if you block, I mean, if you have, for example, a 10k shield and block mitigation of 50% and you get a hit that deals 30k damage, first the shield will mitigate that 10k and then the rest of the damage will be mitigated by your block, doing maths:

30k hit-10k shield= 20k hit- (20k hit* 0.5 block mitigation)= 10k damage at the end

Meanwhile with mitigation and then a heal of 10k as any other tank can do:

30k hit -(30k hit *0.5 block mitigation)=15k damage done at the end -10k heal= 5k damage at the end

As you can see, shields are underperforming compared to burst heals.

Said so, my idea is give the templar shield mitigation, only in that ability, so it will be the same as a heal but temporary because at the end of the ability time it will dissapear.

So lets put the first example but being able to mitigate that damage blocking with the shield:

30k hit-(30k hit*0.5 mitigation)-10k shield=5k damage to your hp.

As you can see it is equivalent of being able to burst heal but with the disadvantage that at the end of the ability, if you still have the shield, it will dissapear.

Then you will have a templar capable of mitigate the same way as a burst heal but being tricky because you need to know when the boss will hit you hard in order to cast it, rewarding the skill and knowledge of the player and giving a templar tank chance to shine instead of being not that good compared to all other classes.

Also in terms of balance in PvP, as you know, shields are cut by half so if you go to PvP and cast the shield it will be a 5k shield so it still not being worth compared to the burst heal that can heal more than that and also get a critical heal, things that damage shields cannot.

What do you thing?

Try putting it in combat section or asking a mod to move it

It will last longer and get more audience over time on it

    1. Honor the dead is not far worse than dragon blood
    2. Templar has living dark + 2 healing ground aoes, self healing is very good in stationery fights

I’d say the easy fix is just make honor the dead self heal only. Plus zos just buffed rune focus.

Good points, but if they change honor the dead to be a selfheal they will automatically nerf templar healers so I think that for tanks the best way to give them a "burst heal" (not a heal but a way to survive) is giving the shield block reduction, also when templars cast sun shield they proc minor protection.

I know that a class with a burst heal on allies and a big shield with block reduction could be a bit broken but arcanist excels in tanking and healing (well in all support roles) compared to templar, and warden too. Also templars are not even the top 3 best dd in the game rn so it feels that the class is a bit abandoned.

ZOS is giving templars buffs but the only one that is good is the buff on rune focus, because the change in solar flare is useless due to the difficulty to actually put it into the bars so it gives 0 flexibility. And the change on backlash is a pure PvP buff, and still being one of the worst skills to use lol.

    Greetings,

After further review we have decided to move this thread to a category we think is more appropriate for this topic, as it deals with class mechanics.

    Thank you for your understanding

I've done my fair share of Templar Tanking and I don't think I really see a good reason for a dedicated, burst heal for Templar Tank. I can see its usefulness, but really, Healer should be responsible with Combat Prayer, or Steadfast Ward, or their own burst heal, if things go that bad. Yes, other classes have good burst heals, which I would argue should be lessened for more group coordination, not that Templar needs to be raised up.

HOWEVER, if ZOS were bent on catering to this idea of burst heals for Templar Tanks, perhaps Rushed Ceremony could just prioritize the caster if they are below 50% health. That should give it flexibility for what you want it for, while also not hurting Healers that should try not taking damage themselves anyway.

From my experience, Templar Tanks are really quite good! They have really strong heals and Radiant Ward gives a GREAT shield, especially when paired with Vateshran's Void Bash Shield and a smattering of enemies.

My main issues with Templar Tanks are: they have no CC (now that Ice Staff doesn't immobilize) and Radiant Ward is a HUGE linchpin. Without Radiant Ward, Templar Tanking really wouldn't work. Living Dark is pretty good, but only procing on direct damage gives it a nice situational skill curve so that it's not ALWAYs just amazing and you have to evaluate if the current fight warrants its use.

Personally, I think Templar would benefit greatly from reducing the cost of Extended Ritual as I find the cost just too high. Also, I would love to see ZOS give Templars some kind of CC. I thought maybe Impulse on Frost Staff could immobilize rather than give Minor Protection, but that may be bad for other classes to get access to... Perhaps Spear Shards or Unstable Core could be changed to add a CC ability. I'd rather Blazing Shield NOT go that direction as I think there is a better design for it...
