Ability to inspect players in ESO

Just curious why there isn't an ability to inspect gear and skills like you can in games like WoW, would being able to inspect a player be something that ESO players would be interested in?

If only to inspect their outfits. Can't think of nothing else that would make me interested.
To be the Chosen One really sounds like lots of fun,

I believe the addons/logs can scrape players gear.

Personally, I wish it wasn't a thing as it's fun to be able to have a degree of mystery.

Everything else would open up the gate for toxic behaviour. Even if it's an opt-in, certain people would definitve gate grouping behind being able inspect and demand specific set ups.

i guess most people would be like "it would just be used for gatekeeping" for stuff like trials, not just to satisfy curiosity

This would be my initial concern as well. However, I believe this can already be done with various addons (at least during combat, unsure if it's possible outside of combat), and while I'm sure it's an issue for some... I don't think it would be as bad was we think. I found looking at trial logs very helpful because I could see how other setups performed, which would inspire me to experiment more with my own setup.

I've run some pretty questionable setups in trials (normal, not vet), and I've never had anyone take issue with them. They worked, and I knew my mechs, so there wasn't a problem.

Vet trials I could see being more of an issue, unsure of PvP.

Mainly because in game like WoW it's used to ridicule other players...the devs have been pretty clear that ain't happening...though after watching the absolute insanity and humiliation of Vet Rockgrove on Twitch last Saturday it seems that they haven't thought this philosophy all the way through

But I have always been like if you want to Know just ask me.

Some information appears to be public. Here is what I have noticed people commenting on:

    1) Max Health
    2) Character Name
    3) @UserID

Beyond that I'm not sure what else might be available. Personally, I don't think UserID should be made public. I don't care if everyone jumps on me for saying that but if we have to use an ID there should be a permanent ZOS ID and an alias (which can be changed on demand) to cover it for public consumption. Like how Steam does it.

I did a post a while back about how players could setup like a public profile. As I learned thru that experience, sometimes good ideas can also be used by mischievous or really really mean-spirited folks. Hence protecting my UserID :)

It was absolutely the PITS in WoW. People chose to denigrate anyone they liked with its use. Not a good thing for a game wanting to be "inclusive".

A hard no from me. If you want to know something, ask please.

My previous game had the ability to let you inspect/spy people's setups and the amount of unsolicitied comments was just bad. And even though they gave you the option to hide your setup from being inspected, the unsolicited comments still came because you had it hidden. Was just a no-win situation.

Do you really want to explain why you're not using <streamer>'s mandatory build everytime you do group content?

That would be the main issue, yes. Hard no from me for that reason alone, not to mention the nasty whispers I've experienced in the other game I played where it was a thing.

Gotta say that I'm glad there is no such ability in ESO.

Why? Because prior experience has made me 100% certain that the only appropriate way to deal with this is to make people ask and to allow people to refuse to engage with this topic if they don't want to do so. If you want to know what gear someone's running, ask. It should be up to them to tell you or not tell you as they see fit.

'Examine' options that let you snoop on other peoples' gear loadouts encourage one thing and one thing alone - nosiness. It's pure indulgence of nosiness that inclines some people to start to think that they're going to start Helping People™ by commenting on/criticizing their gear.

At its absolute best, this function can be marginally convenient when someone's asking you for help in figuring out their gear situation and you can look for yourself to see what they're starting with. This can also be accomplished by asking them to link their gear in a chat window, and IMO, that's how it *should* be addressed.

There is not one single good argument for why this needs to exist that cannot be resolved by simply asking if you're so concerned about someone's gear situation. If your concern is legit and the person in question wants your input, feedback or opinion, you can ask them about it and they can engage you on the subject.

Otherwise, live in your own yard and stop acting like you're entitled to live in mine as well.

And there is already enough of that in GF groups.

While it can be helpful in helping someone gear better, the drawback in ESO is not worth it. I understand the devs made a conscious choice to leave this out. Probably a very good decision.

My Stamblade wears Leviathan and Spriggans. Not only would players call my gear selfish, it'd also be sub-optimal and I'd be kicked from Dungeons since DD's are a dime a dozen.

In wow, a long time ago, on an alt, some random player came up to me in a city, paused, then whispered:

      “Your gear sucks.”

      Then they left.

I put them on ignore, but really was that a great way of using that feature?.

      ESO does not need it.

It's already bad that you can see what other players within your group have looted with a certain addon. Nobody needs to know that, and it has lead to some annoying situations during IC events.

Imagine having the skill and the DPS to do vet hardmode dungeons. And then queuing for group finder and getting kicked because the person running the gear inspect felt that you were wearing the wrong dps set. That is 100% what would happen if something this horrible were ever added to the game.

Hard no, got no desire to explain why I am not wearing the latest greatest sets every time I group, hint the answer is I can't be stuffed farming them, especially if its a trial set since I don't do trials.

At most I would like to be able to see the details of someone's outfit/costume set up/dyes/motifs/costumes used etc.

I don't care what gear someone wears so long as they can fulfil their role in the group.

It would be one thing if they were wearing white trait less gear or 12 different singe pieces of individual sets or something that would be annoying in a group setting and I could understand people complaining about that.

But if someone wants to wear sets that they have farmed bought than that is their choice, I would rather see a cool looking set up with interesting visuals over the perfect sets that maximises damage, if this inspect feature were added players like that would end up being gate kept by those insisting on the latest greatest sets, despite their ability to do the content just fine without those sets.

Why should others have the power to "inspect" me? Nothing wrong with people being able to see which styles are in use in an outfit, but that's because the outfit is in plain sight for all to view. As many people already said, if someone's curious, asking is a simple solution that requires no addons, no Minion and is always up to date. I already deeply dislike addons that let others see what you loot and I wish there was a way to opt out of this exposure (or if there is, I'm unaware of it).

If people ever figure out that gear is not all that important it could be a thing. Sure, you need to wear something logical that supports your build, but there are many viable sets and builds.

Rotations and knowledge of mechanics, that is what is important.
