As a native English speaker I find it highly offensive that my language be pushed onto others that do not speak it. Why should native Russian speakers be considered rude for speaking - or typing - in Russian????? C'mon, get real. They have as much right to ask us to speak Russian as we do to ask them to speak English.

Please read the thread. The point is:
    1) if you are in a group, you could not speak an incomprehensible language in group chat. Do it as whisper.
    2) if you are requested to speak a comprehensible language, you are not allowed to answer with swear words
    3) if you speak in your native language (except English that is the official language of this game) other people could not know if you are speaking bad or not, if you are speaking about the others or not, etc... so it's not fine.
Use whisper option, why not ?

I wouldn't bother. I once reported someone who was going around calling people [snip] and other stuff along those line for no reason. This was my response, telling me to just ignore them in game...
Few days after this response I see the same kid in Gold Coast blasting his mouth off again.

Also whilst tedious I understand, whenever I get a non English speaker in game I pop up Google translate and try my best to communicate, sometimes the way people approach words can be considered hostile. Try to treat your fellow gamer how you wanna be treated.

"Please also be aware that you can add players whose behavior you find objectionable to the ignore list. To do this, open your contacts list (default: O) and click on the "No Entry" icon in the upper right corner. Now you have the option to add players. You can also do this by right-clicking on a player's name and choosing "Ignore". Once this is done, messages from the player in question will no longer be able to reach you."

This reminds me of that song

    That song?

And my favourite variant of it, doing stuff in games while listening to it always adds fun even to most mundane things :D

I also don't support original poster in this thread. It was rude of him to interrupt other players who spoke their preferred language. No matter where it happens - in group, in zone, in /say. If other people talk between themselves in unknown (to you) language, that's their right. If person is asking question in unknown language, ignore it - it's not meant for you. Only if this question is aimed directly at you (in whisper), you can say that you don't understand this language.

Saying things like "English pls" always sounds passive-aggressive to me :o It would be better to say "Sorry, I can't understand your language" etc. Or simply ignore their conversation.
I sometimes end up in groups where other people speak language which I can't understand. While it's always unpleasant to feel left out, it's my own problem. If I can't understand their conversation, this conversation is not meant for me.

the insult actually was to ask him to speak english. This is a discrminating request, because this game is open for players from all over the world. Kyrillic is even explicitly supported as font set.

On EU, this usually would be no issue, as we see french, german, russian and other languages frequently. (Although myself I prefer to write in english instead of german).

On NA, it is less common, apart from some spanish (Mexico) or french (Canada) now and then.
Still, this does not justify to discriminate against other players by denying them the right to use their native language.

Asking someone to speak a common language in a group is not discriminating nor is it denying anyone's "right" to use their native language.

you can see on the screenshot, that 2 persons talk russian. So yes, it IS discriminating to request to talk a different language. It obviously was not relevant for the rest of the group, what they talked about.
You could have talked russian, if you prefer one common language, right? (just kidding, but I think this different perspective shows the problem: why is english of "higher" value than russian? Just because you lack the ability to talk 2 languages?).

In this forum the only language admitted is English. I have reported a post written in another language. The official language of this game is English, so everyone is supposed to understand English language. If you go for a random dungeon with two people speaking another language, you cannot understand neither if they are speaking to you or not, if they are speaking about you or not, if they are fine or angry, etc... So it's really very rude to speak an incomprehensible language (also with cyrillic characters) in presence of other two persons... BTW my native language is not English, and I try every day to translate everything into English.

ZOS has stated clearly in the past, that the forum uses a different ruleset.
E.g. terms that are classified as obzene in the forum, are not ingame.

The game itself has explicit support for kyrillic, so ingame it is standard like english.
The fact that you personally dislike it does not allow you to spread wrong information.

This gotta be the cringiest reason for reporting someone in video game history.

I'm not gonna go over the things that have been said in the thread already - like how two people just had a conversation and how in Russian it's a pretty common thing to use swear words in a daily speech without implying anything offensive.

But it must be a tough world out there for OP if that incident is qualified as harassment for them, just saying.

I am not spreading wrong informations. I said in this forum the only language admitted is English, I did not said in game (please read well before answering and attacking me).
In game and mostly in a group chat with unknown people, it is very rude to express yourself in an unfamiliar language. If you want to speak to only one member of the group, use the whisper option. If you choose group chat, the content is assumed to be directed to all members of the group

why is english of "higher" value than russian?.

It's not the point of english being of "higher value" than russian or any other language. It just so happens that english is the language internationally agreed upon for communicating among people of different nationalities and native languages. Else we would have to ask everyone who speaks what and negotiate every time what language to choose in any given group.

Why english has obtained such a status is a long story that covers decades and centuries, but that's how it is, and it does not mean that english has "more value". It just mean that it is THE international language because there needs to be one. Native speakers such as Americans or British people don't have to learn it, that's all there is to it, it does not make them superior in any way. It's just easier for them.

English is meant to be used without prior questioning in any and every international environment (including MMOs), and those who cannot deal with this are supposed to make the efforts to build their own environment based on another common language. Hence, in my opinion, speaking russian (or anything else but english for that matter) in a random group is rude.

That being said, "english please !" sounds very passive-aggressive to me as well.

Either way, I don't think any of this is worth getting upset, let alone reporting.
