Can we disable character voices?

Right now I always turn the volume to 0 when I’m playing ESO because I CANNOT stand the character yelling “uhh, huh, ahh, ohh” all the time when I use a spammable. Any ways to disable character voice?

Did you try different voices when creating your character? Some are quieter than others.

I've tried every voice in both genders in all races. They ALL suck.

Yeah - I desperately need a "mute character voice" option.

Problem is.... I just really hate VA. In toto. It drives me nuts. And the second part of that is - I hate that my character(s) are forced to make noises that.... I hate.

And corollary to that is.... had this game not wasted millions of dollars on icky stupid VA, perhaps all of you who are complaining about performance.... wouldn't be.

OMG I couldn't agree with you more. I *** HATE VA in games that do not have EXCELLENT writings. Frankly, 99% of the storyline and quests SUCK in this game. And va made them even worse. Like if you can't create great characters, at least let me imagine what they'll sound like instead of SHOVING the va down my throat.

Edit: Honestly I think Oblivion will be a better game without the voice acting. The memes are DIVINE, tho

Well, I do enjoy the quests. But that's most likely because I've played TES games since Arena in 1994. My background is in AD&D tabletop from the mid-70s, moved on to CRPGs in the mid-80s. First MMO was WoW in vanilla - and when after MOP it was going in a direction that wasn't going to be fun for me, I quit and haven't been back (um.... Classic reissue.... you think I'm going to find it fun to replay the entire 40 levels, running with no mount? Nope....) Then I played RIFT for a few years (OMG the housing was the best I've ever seen - ESO could take lessons.... but of course ESO is seriously into monetiziing instead of providing a quality housing setup).

So yeah.... I like ESO for some stuff. But in other areas, I'm not so impressed. Still, I do enjoy the game overall.

Can't you just lower the dialogue volume in settings?

Lowering the dialogue volume will definitely work for NPCs, but it's all or nothing. It will help the kids who find voice acting "icky" because it will silence everyone together, but I'm not completely sure if it applies to your character as well.

There's an addon on PC called 'banker shut up' which originally just silenced bankers but also adds a mute button to each NPC's dialogue box so you can mute them individually if you don't like their voice. Unfortunately however it doesn't work on 'background' NPCs like the ones going on about dragons in Elseweyr.

Note, you can silence the bankers by immediately choosing an activity after activating them. So, for deposits, Hit E or 1 again, Guild Bank 2, Guild Store 3 etc. You can do the same thing with the Story NPCs hitting 1 or 2 or 3 stops the current speech.

Note, the banker in Coldharbor and a couple of other places have a different dialog tree, so the first choice is a conversation starter.

Not sure what you do with a controller for anything other than the first choice in the tree.

Yeah this has been the gripe i've had since early BETA testing tbqh. I love hearing the ambient voices (atmosphere) and definitely enjoy the non-dialog-box voice convos (like before/after certain quests) that happen right in front of you like a 'scene'.

I mean, on some level i sorta understand why Zenimax didn't let us mute only quest convo dialogs back then in beta, since it was such a 'big selling point' and maybe they didn't want to insult the voice-actors i dunno.

But now? At least give us the OPTION.

Problem is twofold: First, most humans read (and comprehend) much faster than the speed (or lack thereof) at which most of the NPC questgivers talk in convos. So our choices are to either sit there waiting for the NPC to finish sentences....or....click dialog option before they finish, thereby cutting off words/phrases mid-speech (not very satisfying RP-wise) .

Secondly, and most importantly imo, no matter how skilled the voice-actors are, they will never be as immersive as the sheer limitless range & power of human imagination. (from reading) -- Not to mention the fact that 3/4ths of all "basic" NPC's no matter what map area all sound the exactly same anyway lol

My man you speak the truth. I read A LOT faster (400w/min) than the average human speaking speed (100-130 w/min), which basically means the NPC won’t get to finish half of the sentence when I finished reading the dialogue, and that’s why I absolutely HATE voice acting in TAVG or visual novel genre. I’m ok with RPG like Divinity because the storyline is SO amazing that I wanna fully immerse myself into it. Or games that have cutscenes because it wouldn’t be as cringy as in ESO and Oblivion. God it’s torturous. I stopped questing all together because 1. the stories are god awful. 2. No cutscenes, just NPCs staring at you uncomfortably. 3. imagine making the voice actors to read emotionless, depthless, dull scripts like this, it must be so boring and exhaustive for them as well.

I don't know who that is. I haven't spent much time in the newer zones so there's a lot of NPCs I haven't met yet.

I started using it back when most of my characters were new and spending a lot of time in the starter zones and I got sick of hearing "Welcome to the bank of Daggerfall" over and over again. The fact that it works on other NPCs is a nice option to have but it's rare that I use it on any specific person.

(To be honest I only have the sound on at all about 1/2 the time, so maybe I'd use it more if I was hearing the NPCs more often. There might be some I've encountered several times but never actually heard.)

Sadly, unless you coincidentally picked just the right voice pack, you still wouldn't get to hear your character's actual voice if character creation used Battlegrounds samples. Because ZOS didn't use the full range of player-character voice actors when recording Battlegrounds dialogue. :( I've only ever heard one voice per gender per race in Battlegrounds matches. When my partner and I are in the same match and I hear my character shouting through his speakers, it's definitely not the voice I picked at character creation. Likewise, when his character calls out in Battlegrounds, it's not with the voice he picked. ZOS would have to get the rest of the actors back to record samples for character creation, and I'm guessing that's very low priority on their infinite list. :/
