I suppose that's my final stance on it. Legit just make it to where if you ignore a player then all their emotes are disabled on your screen.

So five pages in your final position is that you agree with the OP who suggested:
Please allow us to disable the visual effect of mudballs (in settings) so it can ruin this type of behaviour.

that's cool; just recognizing that the OP was absolutely ridiculed for taking the position you are now trying to gracefully bow out with

    <3

Nope, I don't agree with adding a settings option for it.

I agree with making it to where if you ignore a player then you can't see their emotes. Too very different things.

If you're going to call me out as im gracefully trying to leave like a swan into the sunset, at least do it right, my man.

am not a man, and will ask politely that you never misgender me on the forums again :)

you responded directly to a post from the OP stating:
its not really important what you do, but please change it. Its not fun getting harrassed by mudballs, knowing you cant do anything to stop it.

but instead of agreeing with this point that you apparently now whole-heartedly support, you replied to the OP's message saying that it was their own fault for being harassed

fully recognize that you are desperate on your way out to look like you proved a point in this thread tho, so you will likely have some other excuse about how what you are asking for is different from what OP asked for and how OP is thin skinned and your are noble and helpful

Ah, I see we've hit the territory where I'm supposed to be able to tell your gender through a name and a random profile pic.

Incorrect, we have hit the territory where you have now been politely informed of my gender and future efforts to misgender me are a form of harassment
That's a big yikes from me, man.

    Like this one
note that you have made this statement not based on my name and random profile pic, but instead in response to being directly told that I am not a man
Unfortunately for you, I call everyone man when I say "my man" or "what's up man." Saying "my woman" doesn't have a nice ring to it. So, you'll have to bear with me on that part. I also hate to inform you that "man" is a part of "woman." Thus why I also use it in a gender neutral context online like that.

That is not unfortunate for me -- you use gendered speech and after being politely asked not to do so you instead made the decision to try and justify intentionally harassing me with gendered speech
it may have been gender neutral context the first time, but the second time it was a decision on your part to engage in hurtful behaviour that you were asked not to
I will instead fully recognize that we were never going to be getting anywhere in this conversation if these are your expectations from picture-less fictional name forum interactions.

Now, I shall politely scoot on off.

And again you try to strawman a position to scoot off to -- my expectations are not somehow for you to go back and fix your error in your speech, my expectations were that you would do the bare minimum and respect my wishes when directly asked

instead you made a point of trying to use it as a tool against me in a thread where you have been getting upset that people may be punished for that exact sort of behaviour
personally realized this about you from the start, but it is nice to bring it out for people to read

I am very happy we were able to learn so much about each other during this thread.

We should absolutely do it again sometime.

I was hoping for a troll post, but it's serious. I don't see how mudball can make someone feel harassed or how it is possible to stay side by side so long with a stranger in an area (doing crafts maybe?) And neither goes to another location. Most of the times I don't even notice the mud if I'm not up close and screenshoting my char. It just felt a bit exaggerated I don't know.

Can't believe a mod hasn't descended on this thread yet.

For me, the same rules apply IRL and IG, if someone is getting upset by what you're doing, then stop. Why would you want to continue if you're agitating someone? What's the gain? You're sat with your controller / keyboard in-hand and have somehow imposed your need to be miserable on someone else?

I find it really weird that people get their kicks out of this.

Disagreeing with them is trolling? I'm not sure who is trolling I just noticed posts of people who didn't agree with the OP.

This is a huge issue not only in ESO forums but in zone chat as well. People are branded trolls because they don't agree or have a difference of opinion from someone else in game. Not saying there are not genuine trolls but the word gets thrown around so much it has lost it's meaning. Just like the words Nazis and Racist have lost theirs.

There's a big difference in disagreeing with someone, and making fun out of them or mocking them.

I'm not sure what I find more loathesome. The people who think this is fine behavior "because it's just a mudball in a game!", the people who says they (aka the victim) should just go away, or the people making fun of the OP for it.

Mudballs etc can be harmless fun, I do some mudballing with friends or return a stray mudball that hit me when crafting. But if someone asks you to stop, then you stop. Period. Continueing to do so is harassment, no it doesn't matter that it's just a game, or just a harmless graphical effect, or that the person in question should "grow thicker skin" or whatnot. Harassment is harassment and shouldn't be okay or excused, no matter what form it takes.

It shouldn't be difficult not to be a *****.

This one is more anecdotal, but here's a reddit post where someone got a warning for repeated mudding: https://amp.reddit.com/r/elderscrollsonline/comments/5ix8f0/psa_mud_balls_can_be_considered_harassment/

So all of you whining that the OP shouldn't have reported that mudballer ought to review the bit about "As with all forms of harassment, if a player asks you to stop a behavior, you need to stop."

Maybe you should quit defending a textbook example of harassment in violation of the TOS, and remind yourselves that if someone asks you to stop bothering them, you stop.

Teabagging is not a crime. This is a fake digital world.
Are we not all supposed to be mature enough to handle this game? Perhaps if a player can't handle someone teabagging their dead body mmo or combat games in general isn't for them?

I'm pretty much middle ground in this issue, which I know will imply I'm going to get pelted from both sides.

On one side, I have played with mudballs during the festival and I've had my share of fun interchanging mudballs with other players. I haven't used them outside of the festival because I'm usually minding my own business, so I don't have time to just toss stuff at random people who are likely minding their own business themselves. I have had gotten mudballed while minding my own business though, and what I do is just ignore them. Yesterday I got flowers tossed at me. There have been times when someone has been following me around tossing mudballs for 15 minutes straight while I proceeded to ignore them and continue with what I was doing. That's some dedication there, just going after someone who is ignoring you for 15 minutes in a hopeless attempt to get a reaction from them, I guess.

In my opinion that is the absolute best approach, to just pretend they don't even exist. I say this because many of these people are just trying to trigger a reaction from the other users, and when that happens it actually gives them the satisfaction they're looking for. By ignoring them, they never get that reward, therefore that behavior should stop. It's a basic conductism principle; a rewarded behavior tends to be repeated, while a behavior that is ignored (gives no reward) will extinguis by itself. The saying "don't feed the troll" is as old as internet itself, and it works. It works wonders. Don't want to deal with mudballing? Ignore them. This whole post, this is reward fuel for those people.

As for my opinion on the mudballs themselves, they are a minor annoyance. I do not know whether they disrupt actions. If they do, and they're used to, for example, take a chest from someone who was picking it by disrupting the lockpick action, then that is something Zenimax should address because I find that a bit unfair. This can be solved by making it so they do not do anything other than grant you a temporary mud skin, like the flowers do. Again, I do not remember whether they disrupt player actions or not. If they don't do anything other than turn you brown, then it's just a minor annoyance. Even if it's happening for 15 minutes straight, it is still a minor annoyance. For our own mental health, we should learn to handle these minor situations that provoke negative emotions. I'm saying this because life will pelt us with things far worse than being mudballed in a videogame, and by learning to manage our emotions we will live a happier life. It is good for us.

I'm no psychologist, by any means, but I am a dog behaviorist (not the job that feeds me, as it is something I studied for my own pleasure, but that's not important). One of the most important things we have to do when we get a pup is to expose that pup to controlled, negative situations that cause a certain, manageable level of discomfort, so the dog learns to manage their emotions in such situations. Sheltering dogs in cottons and silk will cause it to grow into an insecure adult that will react excessively to minor negative situations. These are the typical dogs that get spooked and run off when a bag flies towards them, when a more balanced dog might be shocked at first, but quickly recover and not react with anything other than minor waryness.

If we analyze the mudballing thing, it is not a threat, it is not something that will impact us in any meaninful way. It's just a dude of questionable maturity being annoying in a videogame, and while that might disrupt our experience, there are a lot of ways to handle it in an adaptative way. Protecting people from every minor discomfort is not helping them, it's legitimating insecurities. I'm not trying to be mean, I'm honestly concerned about the emotional well-being of someone who can feel so distressed about something so inconsequential, and sheltering them is not doing them any good. A medicinemight be bitter but it heals you. I understand we all have different backgrounds, and we're people, but I have my own deal of issues myself, and what has helped me (aside from seeking help) was learning to ignore what caused me distress. I am a short person, I used to feel so terrible about my height. I learned to make jokes about it. I overcame my insecurities about my height (caused by school bullying) by accepting it and turning what I considered an issue into part of myself, something I could joke and laugh about. What I'm trying to say is; "don't give bad people the fuel they need to bring you down".

That said, I'm in no way excusing harassers. Mudballing was a mechanic implemented in the game for fun. However, whose fun? Both people having a friendly mudball fight in Auridon? Because that's not usually what we get to see, and that's not usually the intention behind mudballing. I believe most of the time mudballs are used to pester others, which should make us think what kind of person is the one that has fun causing others distress. That's the true issue here.

So, if mudballs got removed from the game, I wouldn't cry about them. If these people started getting banned due to demonstrated harassment, I wouldn't bat an eyelash either, mainly because I have no sympathy for people whose idea of "fun" is causing others (be them human or other specie) distress.

For those of you, people who are just enjoying your game without bothering others, just ignore them. Really, it is the best approach. Do not let them see your distress because it is worse. I know it's hard, and I know it's not fair, but if you react you're actually giving them what they want.

I'm pretty much middle ground in this issue, which I know will imply I'm going to get pelted from both sides.,

I am inclined to agree with much of your post, As far as people's motives I believe there are people who for whatever reason enjoy harassing others. Whatever motivated them it makes you wonder what caused the pleasure they get from making others feel distressed. I had a recent issue at a quest giver, I like to read the quest as it's being voice acted sometimes I stop for a short rest break while doing so. I come back and see myself being pelted by arrows the quest giver is no where near a monster. I look closely and someone is standing directly behind me. So I step out of the way the mob continues pelting arrows at the real target the person standing directly behind me. So they move back directly behind me I step away again and rinse and repeat. So now I'm not feeling very nice at all so I kill the mob and throw down an area effect spell because I realize this person was trying to get me killed not to mention cause my armor to degrade.

I kept throwing spells at this person and I don't duel but if they had challenged me I might have taken them up on it. I was minding my own business and that is what I usually do. But I thought how cheesy can someone be to pve harress someone. I didn't speak to the person at all.

Not a crime. Merely a potential violation of the Terms of Service you agreed to in order to play in this fake digital world.

All you have to do to be a-okay is be mature enough to stop teabagging when you are asked to stop. Presumably you won't find it too difficult.

I've had that happen to me plenty of times too, me minding my own business or even being afk for a bit (away from mobs) and someone just dragging mobs at me to get me killed. I know because while I might not be interacting with the game (as is the case now), I have two screens, so I know what's going on there. A friend of mine actually told me of someone doing that same action to interrupt someone who was picking a chest. Actions that have a direct effect on the player's character (getting killed, not being able to loot a node, etc) caused by another player are, in my opinion, different to actions that have no effect aside from visual, hence why I commented whether mudballing interrupted the player or not as I am unsure. Flowers don't, of that I'm sure, so no harm there. I do not know how Zenimax handles actions that cause a player's character harm or disrupt their gaming experience, whether they're reportable offenses or not. I presume they are, but I am unsure.

As a little anecdote, there was this guy harassing me in the Deeshan group dungeon, bringing mob after mob towards me while I waited for boss to spawn. I was on my healer at the time. I got away from the attacks, the guy eventually got killed right when the boss spawned. Killed the boss before he could resurrect, and then the guy called me names in local chat. The sad truth is that, if I see someone die before boss spawn, I actually wait for them to be able to attack before I tackle the boss because I'm not an evil person. If this guy hadn't been actively harrassing me, not only would I have waited but I would have actually healed them and helped them against the mobs (it was their doing in the first place, but you get what I mean). If people don't behave like absolute jacks, there are plenty of players like myself who are willing to lend a hand and appreciate a hand being lent too. I've had a lot of fun by joining random people who were doing the same thing I was, and most people are agreeable or are just minding their own business. It's the few rotten apples the ones spoiling the fun for all, just for their own twisted enjoyment at pissing off others.

People can receive warnings or temporary suspensions over it without resorting to full on banning.

Absolutely not. Do people even understand what they are asking for here?

Wrong unfortunately. It's a thing and has happened before, apparently.
