What's the biggest challenge you faced as an ESO noob?

Back when you were still a noob in ESO, or recently, if you're still new to the game, what was the most challenging part of the game? What did you have to try over and over?

I remember struggling with General Endare's boss fight. I think the fight was bugged as well, but I remember killing her a couple times, and she would still revive, and the shadow kept healing her or something. Anyway, stressful fight. Now that I'm CP 650 though she'd probably die in 3 sec, before her shadow even spawns :D

Me? Getting over my MMO-phobia to actually group up with people.

I've always been a solo player, and never even touched an MMO before because of it. The fact that you can play ESO solo is what finally got me to come in the first place - that and the fact that I've got massive Elder Scrolls withdrawal since TES6 isn't coming for another few years.

I finally managed to get over myself and join a nice helpful guild.

Once I ended up with a lot more time at home because of the pandemic, I started running group content with them and learned how to play my role, and I ended up having a lot more fun with everything. It was hard to break out of my shell and start being social, but it really made this a lot better of an experience than I'd ever thought it would be.

The combat. All of it. I'm older, my reflexes aren't as good as they were even 10 years back, and twitchy combat is still pretty bad for me. Yes, after 2.5 years in the game, I can kill stuff - but it's still not easy, and it's definitely not fun.

Oh and btw - the Doshia fight that got nerfed? It's still way too hard for me.... takes me a couple of deaths nearly every time.

Getting over the stress and intimidation that comes with guides / meta / etc.

I felt intimidated to do group or trial content, not knowing if I would be a detriment to my team or not, and not wanting to be the reason why I held my team back, so I avoided group content for awhile, even tho it was the funnest aspect of the game for me.

It took getting on with a great guild to take me along anyways, and show me the ropes, and let me see through my own successes and failures that this game isn't depending on running metas or min / maxed builds, it's just depending on your own skills and awareness and understanding of the design.

Doshia. First boss of fighter's guild questline.

Nowadays, you just step on her.
At launch, before one tamriel, when you meet her at the normal level for that quest .. she was a beast.

    Fungal Grotto 1.

Got the Undaunted quest for that, had no idea what a dungeon was, traveled there with my lvl 2 or 3 mount speed an entered. I was like lvl 15 or so. Wiped on the first adds 10 times and gave up.

I almost cried when I had to do quests scaled to my level (main story and mages/fighters guilds) :'(
In overland and side quests, I only did content when it was much lower level than my own level - when it was grey in quest journal, and when mobs gave neither XP nor loot :/ I had awful "build" and had no idea what stats and gear to use.

That's why nowadays, in good gear and with appropriate "builds", I really enjoy killing mobs and quest bosses fast :)

Spamming Ambush and only Ambush. Back when stun immunity was not a thing I crutched on that ability so hard, and I was terrified of the enemies I couldn't stun. Harvesters were the absolute worst and I remember sneaking by every one in the Hall of Heroes in Bangkorai.

Thanks. I'm not whining.... it's just how it is. There's no way I will ever have 25 year old reflexes again (well.... unless someone actually gives me a "Brainship"....) - and since I really love living in my less than 200 full time residents "back of beyond", satellite is all I will ever have.

It's okay. I manage. I just have to grit my teeth about Doshia. The rest of the FG quest line is easy enough. And the MG is a walk in the park....

Figuring out where I needed to go for particular quests or storylines. I didn’t want to start ALL my characters in Elsweyr but how to get to Morrowind and Summerset? The quest arrows confused me as I didn’t realize they were telling me to go to this town to travel by cart to this other town to travel by boat, etc. I like the idea in theory, but then going through certain towns, I am accosted by a bizillion quest givers and I found it confusing, overwhelming, generally frustrating. While I love to be able to travel anywhere, I wish that it were not possible to stumble into story/zone quests out of order and that DLCs let you activate them from some kind of menu or “go here to start x,y,z” or something.

Hmm...I would say having to figure everything out myself. Back-in-the-day, we did not have the fancy tutorials that new players have today. ZOS made zero effort to show players how to play the game back then. At least after six years newer players have something to help them.

Back when I first got the game (One Tamerial) I was actually so confused after making my character and getting plopped into everything that I straight up quit after 1 day. Some time later, I went back to it and gave it another try. Which only confused me more because when I created a new character, I got transported to Morrowind. I logged out and didn't go back till after Summerset was released. I went back to it because my ex bf wanted me to play with him. He told me that I had to level up before I could do much so I did. Made it all the way to level 50 and got my CP started. But he ended up leaving the game and never actually inviting me to play with him anyway... Once I got into it and understood more, I loved it and been playing for a few years now. Can't say the same for the ex though. He played till he finished everything (completetionist nut) and pretty much quit the game completely.

Hm. Running for Skyshard to get those extra skill points when Veteran levels existed, while using the free res for being below level 6 to get from point A to B versus vet level enemies. But now, skill points are easier to get once you learned easier methods (not from the Crown store)

Then you needed to upgrade items regularly; now, you just upgrade weapons and wear your level 14 training armor till 50. Then you had to put more effort and grind into gear, its been made easier with some meta sets coming from overland mobs. So, finding people to run specific content for the goal to get gear doesn't always work out. You can often be in large guilds and still find no one to roll content with: lots of current and old players run solo since their knowledge of the game enables them to tackle harder content with less.

Resource nodes were plentiful when I was a noob, now you compete against bots and speed monsters; the later is annoying but bots is just eye rolling at the lazy cheese of people.

Learning for myself what to do in PVP. I had no idea what to do with my stats or my skills or armor. I was just having fun. I was a DK Nord with a staff using Rune and flame abilities while having stats in all 3 attributes. I was blissfully unaware that I was a wet noodle. Wasn't until I joined a guild and learned about stamina and magicka and min/max and how my racials effected my strengths and weaknesses that I actually made a build...

Just figuring out the controls and how to get around the map. I started the game in Vardenfell, where the paths wind in and out of mountains and ravines, and it took me a long time to get the hang of it. I don't think I learned until several days in that the shift key would make your character sprint instead of just walk. I also started in first person view for the "immersion" and wondered why I kept getting killed by enemies I kept losing sight of :)

If I ignore the whole other players and MMO bit, it was knowing which quests were important for the storyline, and which were side quests, which were zone quests. I'm glad they brought in the change of icon to help a bit.

I'm also glad that they are bringing in soon the ability to choose how you start, although I do hope they give guidance to help newbies understand, instead of advocating the newest zone or just leaving them to it

Same here! This was the first multiplayer game for me and every time i saw another player i was like "eeeep, dont come close, eeeep eeep i run away now" i enjoyed cadwells silver and gold so much, because back in the day you did not see players of the other alliances. So when i finished the ep questline and started dc or ad, i forget which came first, it was brilliant. The whole world seemed so empty, for me to explore on my own <3

It took me years to play any group content and after i did, i loved it! It felt silly to have been so scared of other players. Then a bit later i went to cyro and absolutely fell in love with pvp and made good friends. I actually started to talk to peeps on mic. I used to be so insecure and shy and this game has helped me so much to be more social n all and not feel uncomfortable in group play. In pvp especially it's so easy to make play mates for life :)

Fight wise? The Omen fight in Stormhaven. Man that one was a pita.

Non-fight wise? The absolute tidawave of prologue and intro quests you get slapped with when you go to e major city. It was incredibly confusing and totally overwhelming, far more confusing than playing the story "out of order".

Hmm, to actually get into Builds, Stats and Sets, I usually wore and used whatever I pleased, no matter if Magicka or Stamina. To be fair that was at a time where mixed builds still worked well, so I didn't knew what I did was absolute garbage and there were no big Streamers, YouTubers or people that knew the game inside out to ask yet. I learned everything by doing, unlike many people today who watch one video and know everything I took months to figure out on my own, which leads to the development that those newer people may use the right sets and can do pretty well, but they don't know why that is and can't really create Setups on their own.

I can't really remember what I struggled with in terms of enemies, but I know the skulls on the map really meant death.

    - Making an effective build, I just started out the same way I played Skyrim
    - Doshia
    - The quest in Firsthold, so many enemies
    - I once got killed by wolves in The Rift (Cadwell's Silver) when I was looking for a treasure map location. I died so fast that I didn't come back for months.
    - Failed at the Bloodspawn boss with my pew pew bowtard build.
