You ever play.... that other major MMO that has a companion feature? Obviously you haven't or you would have a CLEAR example of how AI is often much better than a real human in every aspect except the most challenging top flight content that is designed for a coordinated group of dedicated mid-max players. I am not saying that is what they are going to do here. I haven't a single clue what their long term goal is for this but there are clear examples of at least two games I know where AI/companions are offered in the game and they DO perform better than humans at every level except the very top tier player base.
"But that would eliminate the people aspect of playing an MMO in almost ever aspect of the game except vet trials and dungeons..."
Yup. You are correct. It does.
And this is what I am worried about. There's already a toxic side of the community that is like... if you're not PERFECT then you suck and you are horrible.
Now we got to compete with AI to 'prove' you're worth taking over their companion?
Okay THIS worries me, like, A LOT https://www.gameinformer.com/interview/2021/01/26/the-elder-scrolls-online-oblivion-is-the-next-step-to-adding-romance-in-game

Why would that worry you? I’m sure that just like in SWTOR you can totally bypass such option if it’s not your cup of tea.

They want to improve performance, but with companions they basically double the amount of characters everywhere besides PvP.
Who thought this would be a good idea? The game is already laggy enough with a bad performance, I’m sure companions that fight with you will just make it worse, because the game has to do all their calculations as well.
Especially with the reasons they gave to alter the Champion Point system (reduce calculations and server stress) it makes zero sense to have companions, because they just double those calculations. One step forward, two steps back.

*Edit* Perhaps I should have phrased this as: There is no way ZOS will ALLOW these companions to fight better than a real human.
Then why are they even playing an MMO? I legit don't understand the mentality of playing a game that is specialized in multi-player then refusing to interact with people. If people just want to play through for the lore, overland content is already ridiculously easy to the point where a brand new player who has no idea what they're don't at all can breeze through it all with absolutely no problem.
Not a fan of this. There are two ways this can go. Either the companions are trash and therefore completely pointless to begin with, or they're viable and the multi-player gets removed from a multi-player game.

Aren't the performance issues mostly to do with PvP? I don't PvP and I've never really noticed any, and companions aren't allowed in PvP areas.
Very simple - TES has been single player for most of it's existence - so there are plenty of people here, who have no interest whatsoever to interact with others, but play the game just like they've been playing the other TES games before - solo.

To add, there is also no single player RPG on the market right now that is of a similar scale and scope to Elder Scrolls Online. Well, nothing recent anyway - Sacred 2 has a massive world size, but that game is very dated now and has nowhere near the storytelling and mechanical finesse that ESO does. Those of us who play this game primarily as a single-player RPG would probably be happy campers if they just repackaged it as a single-player offline game. But we aren't given that option, so here we are.

But this one flat out isn't single player. You can disagree with the developer'schoice to make it an MMO but in the end it's 100% irrelevant because multi-player is the decision they went with. As a consumer you then have the power to choose whether that idea is for you or not. What you don't have the power to do is buy a multiplayer game then wonder why it's not solo player lol. Your logic makes as much sense as me picking up WoW then complaining about it not being an RTS
And again, overland content is so easy that a level 20 in green gear can clear it zero problem. What is the point? So all 3 people who actually care about soloing direfrost keep can do it maybe?

There is no way that a companion will play better than a real human.
