I like to make some toons represent other favorite characters from books, tv, movies etc. ie. my sorc is "LoPan".
    OK, I have to admit that's a reference that I enjoy :D

They are a much needed laugh while playing the game. Every time I see some fool who named himself with a Title, or some actual real life persons name in a shameless display of stalking behavior, I get a good chuckle. Same with names from copyrighted works of fiction.

Some people have no imagination. Or it's too active. I can't tell which.

Two constants in every MMO I've played: 1. Players with silly names, 2. Players complaining about players with silly names. Laugh at the witty ones, avoid all the *** ones and rejoice in the absence of name tags.

Playing EP, I do get a bit annoyed with all the Ragnar Lothbrok's running around. Counted up to 28, since early access lol. I bet AD have have loads of Bosmers wielding a bow and called something involving Legolas...
Funnily enough, the only Ragnar Lodbrok I saw was in AD. :D

There's one in the EP too, I've encountered him a couple of times.

I only have one character with an name from a tv show and that's because I wanted to see if I could make a tiny ninja in purple LOL. Most of my character names are variations on a theme and one of my nicknames, only the dark elves are a nickname variation and Morrowind House.

I dunno, it depends on the name as well as what race they're playing..

Silly names are fine on both Argonian and Khajiit characters for example (within reason)

but an Altmer templar called "Ipwnjoo" is pushing it a bit far.

    I completely agree with eliisra.

I don't mind the names as long as they're stupid attempts to try and have that cool name from a famous character or something... Unless it's a witty joke too... For example... The Master of Coin in our guild has a special character to organize bank/safekeep funds/etc... The character is named after Petyr Baelish and is always around the brothel in Ebonheart

But he doesn't 'play' with the guy.

During travels I don't mind stupid names much, I try to pretend they're just really bad reputation names lol.

Can't say they ruin my game since I have to actively mouse-over them and make an effort to read their names. Not offended, either, because I don't allow the ignorance, stupidity, chappeau du derrier-ism of others to control my emotions.

I do understand that if I see Sir Poopy Pantsington running into a delve ahead of me, waiting until he re-emerges would probably save me frustration... and give time to make the cat climb walls in the eternal effort to catch the red dot.

Laehl Direthorn - Bosmer Nightblade, Purveyor of fine Clothes, Bows and Staves
Reeza gra-Zuni - Orc Templar 'War Shaman' and Apothecary
Noemi Snowpaw - Kajiit Dragon Knight - I laugh... or I'd have to kill you.
Kitera Dreamon - Breton of The Dominion: Because those Daggers don't appreciate a great Mage.
Lysara Shadowcroft - Dunmer Bloodmage: This will only hurt a lot.

I really don't mind the funny or clever names. The one's I don't care for are the vulgar player names that have been purposefully made to circumvent the naming filter, if there is one at all.

Also a list of my names

Rylana Dionysis - also my @ handle, a name I have used in about six games to date, was just "Rylana" in beta, but someone took the name in live so I had to add the last name bit. Still makes me mad to this day.

If you are RP'ing, other RP players typically don't have funny names and take their names more seriously. So I don't really see how it ruins the RP experience in this game. If it bothers you that much, just ignore them. Nothing much else you can do about it.

It ruins the RP element imo. But I still find it laughable. I'm not big into the RP thing, I'm not out there trying to speak in an old english accent or anything. But I take pride in naming my characters. Trying to give them a strong name, a name worthy of the class and race of the toon.

Funniest one I ever saw was a cleric or warrior back in Everquest. A Halfing (with his already oddly shaped huge head) named Greavous Headwound. It just made me laugh everytime I saw him.Running around with his huge head and tiny little legs moving way too fast lol.

    YESSS OP !!

Oh god, maybe i'm just a prickly little dude.

But honestly, it really ruins it for me too.

Not only the stupid names people choose, but the stupid shiny mounts and flaming volcano eye sockets and skins.

I mean, this game has so much potential, but as any other company, they will try to appease the majority.

And the majority of players like to rush quests, use shiny outfits and name their character the worst way possible.

I would say i have to respect other people's tastes, but honestly, the majority have INCREDIBLY BAD TASTE.

I really don't get why people have so much difficulty into choosing a lore-friendly name, instead of: "Peepee-In my- Butt"

It makes me loose a little faith in humanity..

Ofc maybe i'm being dramatic, but it sucks to have to put up with this ***.

My Templar, Buffington Penelope Rumblecrunch and Nightblade Maximillian Smashmastersen III are offended that you would call their family names stupid.

So much effort is put up in these games for people to just simply skip dialogue, and use silly names..

    Sadly you are like that...

I have to respect your tastes, what about you respect ours ?

Honestly it's not that hard to choose a lore-friendly name

Come to think of...if anything turns me off this game its RP ers

i find it very creepy adults playing make believe in a game if in honest, but i dnt go moaning openly on a forum about it.

i say live and let live each to their own, who are you to judge or tell people how they should play.

I'd rather have a game full of RPers creeps, than a game full o Quest Rushers, Dialogue Skippers, and Silly Nametags.

Talk as if you're not trying to offend, but you are..

    Respect RPers...

Your silly nametag ruin the game more than the Rper on his own.

Pre launch ZOS touted a player questionnaire that you would fill out and then if you chose so you would never share an instance with lore inappropriate names, underage players, bunny hoppers etc etc. So you only got instance grouped with players of your mindset.

This feature was unfortunately dropped pre launch with the usual lack of reason.

    Just saying..

    Depends on the name.

Some names I avoid even if they are slightly amusing, because they indicate a certain lack of thought.

i have to agree with you, normaly it would bother me the names being so bad but, the names often times give that mmo feel to it, so in the end i suppose it's ... something i can live with.
but if the names are anything insulting to religion, or politics or insult other players or stuff like that then it does bother me.
