Do stupid player names wreck the game for you at all?

I can't stand that. It's a friggin' name and you can't even capitalize the first letter?! Such an eyesore.
I often wonder about those with two names, first and last, in which they capitalize the first name but not the last... Was it intentional? Did he not notice? Did he forget to hit Shift? Does it totally drive her crazy now that she is level twenty but feels she has too much time invested in the character to delete and redo it?

No, stupid character names don't wreck my game, but they do preclude my having any truck whatsoever with whoever is driving that toon around (and, by proxy, anyone they may be hanging with).

Over my years of gaming, I've come to realize that a player character with an idiotic, blatantly misspelled ('Aaraggorn' or 'Leggolass,' for example - Tolkien is surely spinning in his grave), or all lowercase name is just the same as having a great big, flashing neon sign over their head that reads, "Avoid Me!"

this may be more of a you issue. Those aren't even offensive names.

I trhink you are doing the involved player a favor avoiding them, tbh.

    Wow.. look who's talking!

ZOMG, someone named Poopstain O'Fartbags is on an entirely different level than someone with a name like Raystlin Majere.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a firm believer in getting the correct spelling or not using it at all, but it doesn't require them to be a disgusting or at the very least infantile individual.

Also, those names don't make me physically ill. Everytime I kill Poopjuice I get a little nauseous.

There are different reasons for avoiding people. Those with the most repulsive names ('Poopjuice' is a good example) impress me as being attention *** - they are to be avoided so as not to reward them with the attention they seek but (clearly, in my view) do not deserve.

(Getting back to reasons) There are also the unimaginative, the uninspired, the arrogant, the immature, and the list goes on ... character names can reveal a lot about the people behind the toon they created.

And @smeeprocketnub19_ESO: you might be onto something - feel free to avoid me, by any and all means. ;)

I don't generally avoid or /ignore people for minor reasons. My ignore list would fill up way too fast, and there is a limit on that (not sure about on forums, I've never tried.)

I'm not grouping with butt sack on the sole grounds that the name makes me ill.

Oh I don't /ignore people. I've been playing ESO (on the NA magaserver) for a going on three months now and I haven't /ignored a single person yet.

Avoiding folks and ignoring them are two entirely different things, in my view.

tbh, about 80% of my ignores are from /zone in cyrodiil. That will make you start using the ignore feature real quick. That is my exception to the rule. If you don't start ignoring people, the chat becomes incredibly toxic.

    Oh chat?

    *snicker*

All my chat channels (except for group and whisper) are turned off - and have been, on all my toons, since each one of them spawned in that cell in Coldharbour for the first time.

zone and yell are off for me normally, unless I am in reaper's march.

You can't do that in pvp though. Zone is used to communicate what is going on.

Heh. I don't do pvp and, in 15 years of online gaming, I never have. (Strokes and Folks? Can I get an 'Amen'?)

I'll likely leave ESO long behind (in favor of whatever's next) without ever having seen or been in Cyrodiil at all.

(Life itself is all about 'pvp' - simply tune into any news broadcast, at any time of the day or night, anywhere in the world to see what I'm getting at. My game time is for taking a break from all forms of 'real life' pvp - not for emulating it in any virtual online environment, lol.)

I guess I'd be one of those RP People, my character names fit with the world we are playing in, even the Khajiit I named after my cat (Bh'ninx)

but I confess... I am strangely interested in what other people name themselves, sometimes I like to find an out of the way place to hang out & watch the people going by, maybe open Zone Chat at the same time.

& yes, I judge you a little on your name... is it original, or interesting, or vulgar, or funny?
& yes-YES, every once & awhile a name makes me think that person is a total Creeper.

the only names that give me the gamer anger are the ones that string a bunch of nonsense letters together "Fkjgjiutd" is a way worse name than "Monsieur ***"

Not sure how merely posting about one's annoyance is a buzz kill. (And BTW, the "12" isn't necessarily the physical age.)

Now, I'm not an immersion freak, but I'd hazard to guess that it is a subset of other people who have their ambiance buzz (for want of another description) done drive-by-damage to by this "Mr. Toilet" personage, flush no doubt as he is with his own sense of self-righteous individuality.

LMAO!, It is actually one of my husbands toons, mostly a mule. He thought it was funny. Me, not so much...but my names only make sense to me as well.

I can sincerely appreciate the people that come to ESO and simply immerse themselves in the game and become whichever toon they happen to be playing. But much like the PVP vs PVE crowd, people play for different reasons...some are serious and some are just wanting to have fun and kill stuff. Unless they are vulgar or spammy or a jerk in some fashion....I think it's going a little overboard to complain about what other players name their toons. Have some mead or a sweetroll and just chill :D
If options weren't necessary, and everyone played the same way, no one would use addons. Fix the UI!

I make a point out of not allowing other players to impact my enjoyment of the game at all. It must suck to be an immersion focused person that is constantly gauging what other people are doing in order to decide whether you are enjoying yourself or not.

"OMG I don't like this guy's name. The game is totally wrecked for me now."

really.. why should anyone else's name bother you? LOL They are the ones who have to live with that name, not you. Besides, i am used to silly names too. A laugh once in a while isn't a bad thing. How would you like it if people didn't like your name? I see this thread pointless. To each their own.

    Well..

My toon name is Profiterol (yes.. like that sweet dessert that we all love)

I've used this name since ages ago, and there is no special reason, I just like it... I've received a lot of whispers "is that the dessert name?" and me and a stranger have a laugh about it... it might be silly, but hey, it rocks haha !

And............. guess what... my friends name are Tiramisu, LemonPie, Quesillo and Golfeado (last 2 are S.American desserts)

We almost created a guild named "Da Bakery" but that was long time ago hahaha... they dont play TESO :'(

Anyway... I believe that even the name is part of the fun, I agree that is quite interesting to see how creative (or not) some players are with their names, but that doesnt bother me at all... BUT.. I have to admit, going to a vet dungeon waiting for a tank and suddenly "asdasd123 joins the party" makes me think "oh crap..."

    King-Dark-Aragorn-Vader sounds legit... :pensive:

Once I saw a Khajit named This-One-Lifts <---- that made my week :)

Or at least one where you can play it co-op or multi-player so you can play with your husband/wife, small group of friends. I would have been all for it for sure. The endless Elder Scrolls game. ^5 to that notion.

Some names are pathetic, but when I see names like "It's not a dress it's a robe" I have a good laugh. It may be a name many of you experienced MMO players have seen often, but as a Noob I have loads of fun reading the names.

As far as account names are concerned, I think many people did not know they would be visible ingame. That's the only way I can explain some extremely offensive names I've come across (only the account name, the character name was normal).

Playing EP, I do get a bit annoyed with all the Ragnar Lothbrok's running around. Counted up to 28, since early access lol. I bet AD have have loads of Bosmers wielding a bow and called something involving Legolas...

That's my definition of stupid names. When you're so bloody unintuitive and boring that you need to steal a name from a well-known fantasy character. Than add random letters, diacritic marks or numbers, because the name's already taken by like 50 other guys with the same lack of imagination.
I always find myself laughing when I see people with names taken from the Forgotten Realms universe. Not least of all when their names reflect a particular pairing/shipping... And I'm pretty sure I saw someone whose character had a three-part name from three different non-Elder Scrolls universes. Jarlaxle Legolas Something-or-other.

Still, I get some pleasure out of screenshotting the silliest character names. For example:
    Microsoft Paper Clip
    Canadian sausage
    Cartridge Star-Caller

    Brings-His-Own-Forest - Argonian Warden Healer level 50
Hrodulf Bearpaw - Nord Warden Bear Friend & identical twin of Bjornolfr level 50
Jadisa al-Belkarth - Redguard Arcanist Damage Dealer level 50

Arzhela Petit - Breton Dragonknight Healer (Daggerfall Covenant) level 50
Bjornolfr Steel-Shaper - Nord Dragonknight Crafter (Ebonheart Pact) level 50 EAGERLY AWAITING HIS BEAR

    witty is good.
I like to make some toons represent other favorite characters from books, tv, movies etc. ie. my sorc is "LoPan". fun to style them as close as possible.
but dope/drink/gangsta references in a name will make my eyes roll.

not always, it depends on how i perceive them..or rather, the thinking behind them :)

Example: there is a player named 'Thralloforgrimmar'
    why don't you go back..really..

Example 2: there is an argonian player named 'who-flung-dung'
i still laugh with that one ^^

I more annoyed by guild names. TES have incredibly rich lore to choose from, yet most of guild names are not fitting the ES, or worse, from other fantasy settings.

No matter how friendly people may be, I am never going to join "Fellowship of the ring" and similar guilds

I know right, no matter the genre why are there so many "legion" guilds around?
way back in wow I made a priest named Tobias funke. (was creepy how precise one could make a human toon look like Tobias.
