Agree wholeheartedly. Not just in games but everywhere in life, stupid people should be conspicuous.

The fact that another players name "ruins" the game for you is laughable. The measure of a man is what bothers him...

Naw, the measure of a man is how big his man parts are. And, if his name is Mr. Peepeepants.

I just let the names go, but shake my head sometimes. One good thing about punk names is it tells me not to go dungeon delving with the fool.

Can't say it ruins my game, but I do sometimes wonder how on earth some people can think their names are amusing. But what I may find a tragic lack of originality might make someone else's day, so I go with a policy of live and let live.

After all, casting my mind back to my first D&D names oh-so-many years ago as a child, I wince with embarrassment, so who am I to criticise?!

Offensive names I view as a different matter, and I'd report them if they were truly distasteful. Happily, I've only come across two such names in the game so far.

i find it very creepy adults playing make believe in a game if in honest, but i dnt go moaning openly on a forum about it.

i say live and let live each to their own, who are you to judge or tell people how they should play.

Considering that RPGS (you know, the part that was originally part of MMORPG?) were originally created by and for adults, I'd say it's you who has a problem, primarily lack of imagination. MMOs are nothing more than a way to continue to play Barbie/GI Joe/Action Man without the dolls littering up the house. EVERYBODY who plays these games is a kid at heart, some of us kids just like to additionally use our brains for part of the fun as we do so.

Yeah, and even though I'm not a real RP'er, I know a lot of adults who do RP in rennaisance faires and civil war re-enactments, which is way more deep than in video games (and which actually looks a lot more fun).

Stupid names are a great way of indicating the maturity of a player, or a guild. It doesn't ruin the game for me, rather it's useful in pointing out who to avoid.

If someone wants to label his or herself as stupid and/or unimaginative, by poor choice of character name, that's their problem, I'm not going to make it mine.

If something of such monumental unimportance ruins the game for you, I suggest you stick to solo games.

What someone else calls their character really doesn't affect me. Having said that, I really don't understand how people can give a character a stupid joke name and then actually play that character through to vet ranks. I mean, wouldn't you start to regret the stupid joke name way before then? Wouldn't it stop being funny after a relatively short time playing? I can understand (and even appreciate) stupid joke names on mules or crafting alts, but not on a character that you're actually spending a significant amount of time playing.

Now as to the idea of only being able to select names from a pre-existing list, I think it's an absolutely terrible idea. I've got 16 characters, and I spent a lot of time coming up with unique, yet lore-appropriate names for each of them. For me the names were the most time-consuming part of creating the characters by far. Heck, I spent over a month planning and deciding on my main's name before release.

This is something I've grown to deal with. I think it's the generation who never played D&D or other pen and paper rpgs. They do not understand the "R" in mmorpg and how it fits in with the game world. How else could you use a name like Jonathan-North-MN... In a game with lore as rich as ESO.

no it wouldn't bother them, its a game and i dnt take it very seriously at all because game are suppose to be fun? Does it affect how i play? No in a dam good player, the fact that this bothers people so much is amusing in its self.

if people judge you by your name then probs kinda people your dnt want to be friends with, and kinda concerning really, i mean do people judge others by name in rl? Colour? Sexuality? Some do some dnt, but you wouldn't want to be friends with those that do would you.

Names in RL are given, names in MMOs are chosen, that's a big difference. Ofc, I wouldn't wanna be friends with someone calling himself "[snip]" and I do judge him by his decision to choose that name.

If his parents gave him that name, I'd blame them, not him.

That's an entirely false analogy. The things you mention in real life are things that a person has not chosen for themselves, and they are not an indication in any way of a person's intelligence, maturity, or personality. That's why judging a person based on them is wrong.

Judging a person's maturity based on the name that they select for their character in an MMORPG is entirely appropriate, because it's absolutely a reflection of their maturity.

A while back I saw an Argonian named Poops-in-Pants. At the time I thought it was childish, but kind of appreciate the humor behind an Argonian who is not brave at all, or maybe just has terrible IBS.

Outside of the overtly crass names, I think there's very little that would be truly lore breaking. People inherit ridiculous nicknames all the time, why does it break someone's RP for a character to have a ridiculous name? If anything, I would think this would give an RPer an excuse to fill in some creative backstory on how someone could have gotten such a ridiculous name. Shore leave is always a great source of interesting nicknames, and I'll bet the College of Winterhold has some outlandish hazing rituals (if it exists yet).

I think I will name my next character "Get Over It" in honor of this thread. He will be a crass, aloof, abrasive Nord who was raised in an Argonian brothel. As a child, he used to complain about his circumstances, and was told to get over it so many times he thought that was his name. He will lie and tell everyone that he was a master hurdler to explain how he was given his name.

I would never support pre-chosen names but having a random choice might eliminate some of the dumber names that appear to have been an off-the-wall choice because a name was needed. There will always be stupid or offensive names just as there will always be ugly character designs running around in their underwear, it's the nature of the beast. Since there are no nameplates (yay) we can avoid reading them and just not pay attention in the bank or at crafting stations.

I love that we can have long names with spaces so even common or favorite names can be used with a variant of some sort. I saw a woodelf running around with my elf's first name but we didn't have the same last name. It was interesting though because she could have been my sister.
