Worthless Profanity Filter

Sometime in the recent past the profanity filters have changed. Instead of just filtering common English profanity, someone decided to add, from what I've seen, profanity from just about every other major language that can possibly be typed using the English alphabet. When you add the fact that it ignores spaces, it is now removing a lot of common speech, just because, without the spaces, it becomes a foreign profanity!!! (e.g. "Hey put an AE on that group of adds." Yeah, this one is fairly understandable with the "put a" censored, but many others are not.)

So now everyone will turn off the filter so they can figure out what people are saying in English, and the filter is worthless. Is there any way to fix this? It used to be nice not to see the F-word every other line in zone chat. Now I have to choose whether to see that, or not understand what my friends and group mates are talking about. Please put it back the way it was.

I don't use the filter, but before I found it, and I saw it censor a word I wrote in chat, I just rewrote the message and used in incorrect spelling on the legitimate word.

Its a nuisance. But it works.

    IMHO

I wonder if this also contributes to some of the social bans that we have been seeing, lately.

I turned off the profanity filter about an hour after first logging into the game, after seeing it censor both "The pen is mightier than the sword," and "[...] at water's edge the party stopped [...]". (Or something along those lines for the second one.) Turning it off is now part of the routine (and long) list of settings adjustments I have to make every time I set up a new character. Because in 2020, global settings are too hard.

Indeed, whatever regular expressions they're using to implement the filter are really not doing their job right.

They filter everything and make it into just random strings of characters that look like a cypher or something.

I'd recommend just turning the thing off entirely.

Does it still censor "Whisper me"?
Edit: I'm fluent enough in english I don't need translation for games, books or movies but not enough to quickly do crossword puzzles. Please don't make game chat one.

You hit the nail on the head. The filter is doing the job so well that it makes reading what should be normal speech impossible so people that might actually want the filter on, still turn it off.

    Yep.
if I could make another character, their name would be Cries-For-Character-Slots. AKA, I need more.

Moaned at if you do, moaned at if you don’t.
Just imagine the number of whiners there would be if they didn’t have a profanity filter, hell, if it didn’t have the current level on place I’d put money down that there would be an opposite to this thread.

Thanks for finally clearing that one up for me. I'm an english speaker and I thought that Whisper me was being censored because it is usually spam :D It's often a game for me, and an education after googling swear words I would otherwise never have learnt, to try figure out "Guess the swearword".

If they enabled chat in the loading screens, it would at least give me something to do to pass the time.

Just turn the filter off and deal with any swearing like an adult. Just ignore it and don't allow it to bother you. People swear, it's a fact of life, whether you like it or not.

Mine is supposed to be turned off but still:

Why even "farm tower" is censored?

    In which language is that?

Also if my settings are in English, this shouldn't happen

There is literally no end and I know "English breaking" profanity filters from my language

Funny, but it was the main reason I turned off this useless filter some years ago :D I was new player, and I saw all the guild recruiting messages in zone chat ending with censored text... I wondered why do they always need to add some profane words to their messages?.. :D

This filter is example of very bad job :/ I sometimes see new players repeating their text in zone chat and then being confused (cause they have the filter enabled and don't understand why their normal words are censored).

I've never understood this desire to censor everything. I'm grown up, I can make my own choices, I don't need some self-righteous prude deciding for me.

Censoring legitimate anatomical terms is even more incomprehensible to me.

    Human race: grow up.

The filter on the forums is a bit better than the one in-game, but even here there are some words that get censored which always make me shake my head. I mean: [snip] Wth? I once tried typing [snip] and noticed it wouldn't let me. Protecting people from being insulted is all well and good, but if it keeps you from using certain latin words correctly, that's taking it too far.

Yes, it is. This is old school tech, apparently lost to the ages and being reinvented, incorrectly, by a new generation. It is almost like text-based online games never existed. :disappointed:

The problem here is that this word is used as an English slur far more often than a Latin word and I don't think the profanity algorithm have yet been invented that can tell the difference.

You're right to do this, of course, in case of actual profanities that are being typed out, circumventing the filter. But you did see the way I used the word that has been edited out, right? That's the way it should be used, there is nothing profane about it whatsoever, it's a latin word! That the filter can't tell the difference is one thing, but as an actual human being you should be able to do what the filter can't. But, without trying to be personal to any specific mods or admins here, this is often a problem on these forums: a mindless sticking to the rules without actually looking at the context first. :/

The filter sucks so bad in German that I always think of it as an April joke they forgot to turn off in year 1. :p
