When entering a dungeon, bg or any other small scale grp thing I say something like "heya" or "hello" because I think it's a good way to start. Sometimes you get a reply from one or two but in many cases it's nothing, not a Word.

So what is your reason for not greeting your fellow players ?

If you're on EU the peeps may just not speak English, sometimes they also run with chat closed.

Am sure it's nothing personal :)

More often than not I think they are just there to get their pledge key, and stopping to type something in chat would require them to take their fingers off the movement keys.
Nowadays I rarely do dungeons. When I do, it's either something easy to solo, or parachuting in to help a guildmate. Either way, the talking's done already.

I disagree. Many (though not all) people are just entitled and rude, and believe that group content - especially through group finder - is a way to find other people to do their bidding. Often people who have never responded to greetings, advice or requests in a group dungeon run will go on an absolute rant in perfect Queen's English if something doesn't go according to their plan.

I always greet at the start of a group run. It's basic civility. If you enrolled in a group activity IRL you would be considered rude not to greet your team mates, even if you're not going to see them again after it. Just because it's a game doesn't mean there aren't real people behind the screen on the other side.

Luckily I've never had those kinds of tools in my groups. I do agree it's good manners to greet though.

Best I had was a guy run ahead of us and drag a massive mob to the boss - tank used /sitchair, watched him die and we all bagged him.

He left group pretty silently xD

No matter which language you speak "hey" and "hello" are universal and I would dare to say that even if they don't know a single word of English they get the meaning of it.

I have only ever played a rogue thus far in ESO. When doing anything in any content where I don't start with a group of people, the very first thing I do is get rid of chat. I'm sneaking, I'm paying attention to where enemies are, I'm trying to move through that particular space with as little notice as possible, that's my jam, my thing.

When I first started I used to keep chat open, I cannot tell you how many times I missed NPCs and was attacked. For me, that feels like failure being noticed if my intent is to cause as little ripples in space as possible. I love sneaking up behind an enemy NPC, stealing from them twice, killing them and looting them a third time. Something very satisfying for me in being successful at that. Text chat just gets in the way.

If I am doing a dungeon from the queue, I always start off being friendly, and keep my chat open. I also notice a lot of people don't respond but I chalk that up to them not speaking English and me not speaking their language, or they just have their chat minimized always, a lot of people do and I can totally understand that. Considering the amount of toxic behavior people express, the griefing, the trolling and baiting (Thankfully the ESO community doesn't seem to be that bad in this respect) I don't blame them at all.

There are also a lot of players that prefer solo play, if they have to group because the content requires it, and they need to do the content for progression I can also imagine they wouldn't be too chatty.

Point is this, it isn't personal, it couldn't possibly be unless they know you, personally. It's nothing about you, it's something about them. Realize this, and you will never feel bad about others not responding to your friendly hails.

A few days ago I joined a group to kill a boss, said hello and was told, 'No, don't talk, just kill,' which I thought was sort of funny really but doesn't exactly encourage me to be friendly in the future.

They may be in their own chat through an app, talking with their friends.

I wouldn’t take it personally with pugs. Join a social guild for socializing.... :)

^this. I’ll also flag chests and heavy sacks.

I don’t expect a reply and I don’t take it seriously/personally if I don’t get one. However, the vast majority of the time the other players will be just like me. And I’ll take advantage of chat to invite players I’ve enjoyed playing with to my guilds.

It sounds ridiculous, but you can’t assume that all players use or know how to use chat or feel comfortable using it. I know I can become ‘chat blind’ (or as I prefer to call it, ‘highly focused’) when I’m in a dungeon beating on a boss or looting a chest.

Politeness and manners in game are like those in life, you try to be the best person you can and hope that it rubs off on those players/people you meet.

And if, on occasion, I forget mine, that’s on me.

Sorry but that comment put you right among the ones you claim are petty minded.

Everyone and I mean everyone that plays this game no matter their native language know the meaning of "hey" and "hello" it's not about they need to speak English so please think before posting.

It sometimes happens that one of the players responds in Cyrillic characters (bonus points if it's nonsensical letters because they typed the English word "Hello" but forgot they had the keyboard still tuned to Cyrillic ;D). But people do understand. At least the basic greetings are really universally understood on the internet.

I do say "Heya" and "thanks everyone" or WTTE in a dungeon run, and usually, most people reply back. It's as if people are waiting for someone to be the first to type. :D
I very much avoid greeting in Battlegrounds, though. It's embarassing when things go horribly wrong. :D

It’s the bare minimum of courtesy to greet one another, I always say something when I first arrive in a pug. If people don’t return a greeting then I’m less likely to be sympathetic if they don’t know what they’re doing or are being carried, and therefore more likely to agree should anyone do a vote kick on them. I’m also not going to give you whatever item I got as loot that you desperately want and feel entitled to if the first time you start talking to me is when your addon told you I got whatever that item is, and you never even managed to say hi/sup/evening to me at the start. Manners count for a lot.

This. If you don't want to be polite to fellow humans, do solo stuff. If you need to be in a group to do something, expecting you to follow basic norms of human interaction isn't asking too much IMHO. You can say hi and still get your daily done, you don't have to ask how everyone's doing and discuss people's life issues at length.

OMG so much this. It's happened to me several times, and I confess I've responded at least once by going "Oh look, it speaks after all" before dropping from the group without trading the item.

That is just sad and elitist, I'm pretty sure you've been one of the inexperienced ones but now when you feel high and mighty it's all about you lol
