Programming issue 656790 The Fiasco of the Oko rune.

supposition - ESO want to promote people doing daily crafting quests. So occasionally I have to buy Rubedite for crafting weapons heavy armor. I can purchase any quantity from any Guild trader for a reasonable amount of Gold.

The Oko runestone is a real PIA for a variety of reasons.

I have 15 active characters. Daily I get 15 enchanter bundles from Enchanter Hirelings (3/3) Daily haul 6 Rekuta (a purple, supposedly rarer glyph and 1 Oko runestone makes no sense
The OKO glyph is required for 62% of all Enchanting Dailies, while there are a total of 17 runestone of the Essence class not counting the Hakeijo runestone. That also makes no sense.
When doing enchanter surveys, out of 6 piles, 1 Oko runestone is found. So doing enchanter surveys is not a very effective way of accumulating the Oko runestone.
So a level 50 character can buy a Monumental glyph of Health for 262 gold. I have averaged a 30% extraction rate for the the Oko runestone or a cost of 873 gold each for Oko runestone. Now if I have a level 3 character I can buy a lesser glyph of health for 75 gold or a cost of 250 gold for each Oko runestone. So I have to maintain a level 3 character to effect the cost savings.
Obviously I can purchase from a Guild store but few traders have Oko runestones avail or avail in quantities of 200.

With current drop rates I have to buy or make 90% of the Oko runestones that I need. I don't think that is consistent with ESO's outlook toward daily crafting quests. To me requiring the OKO runestone in 62% of the enchanting quests was never considered.

This sounds like the new nirnroot issue! I personally haven't run out of Oko like I had nirnroot though.

Crafting writs are not a self contained, separate entity of the game. You can't expect to do nothing but crafting and, somehow, end up with more mats than you started with. The entire point of crafting writs, especially master writs, is to remove materials from the environment.

There's a very simple solution. Harvest them or buy them from people that have harvested them. People that don't grind writs or who dont sell everything in their inventories are probably sitting on hundreds, if not thousands of these runes.

I only do writs on 4 characters, but adventure and loot quite a bit and I'm sitting at over 500 Oko just from runestones or decons.

How is buying mats inconsistent "with ESO's outlook toward daily crafting quests"? I have had to to buy a lot of style mats, even with hirelings on the 15 characters I do writs on (though I don't do all of them every day). People buy other mats too for crafting.

Just buy a stacks at a guild store. It isn't like the Oko will expire. Perhaps you are on console, which does make finding things suck. Since I'm on PC, after reading your post I decided to do a search for Oko on the TTC website and grabbed 2 stacks of 20 Oko for 20g per Oko in Murkmire. If you are on PC, this is all easily managed. I assume TTC isn't as useful on console since posting would be manual. There was plenty at slightly more expensive prices and larger stacks if I needed.

Why would you buy a Monumental glyph just to get an Oko? Just buy a stack of Oko directly. It will be waaaaay less per Oko than buying a low level glyph.

If the OP does enchanting writs for 15 characters, therein lies the problem.

No bit of programming is going to help that kind of playstyle.

I have 4400 to 4500 each of the stamina/magicka/health essence runes in my Craft Bag. However, the stamina and magicka are averaging 8 to 10 gold apiece while the health is averaging 37 to 40 apiece.

But is it really a higher writ demand, or really a source scarcity? Perception can drive prices just as much as reality can...

Oko is plentiful from runestones, surveys, and deconning glyphs you pick up all over. I can't imagine ever running out of it. Mudcrab Chitin on the other hand...

never made the statistic from where it comes from, but oko is only rune i am regularly running out of. i am doing crafting dailies on a lot of chars.

Gosh, I don't think I've ever run out of Oko runes. Do you do dedicated mat harvesting runs? I make sure I do and hour or so now and again. Maybe more often if I'm crafting a lot.

Oko should only be a third of your writs, not 62%. It's on a rotation with the equipment writs. At least it is for me.

If you do writs on multiple characters, you will eventually need to buy some Oko unless you farm a lot in addition to writs (not talking surveys). It is about the only enchanting mat I ever run out of for writs. It's not a terribly huge issue for me. I can usually spend 5 minutes looking through traders, find a reasonably priced stack of 200, and it's not an issue for 4-6 months.

I think anyone that regularly does writs on multiple toons is going to need to buy: Ruby Ash, Rubedite Ingots, Ancestor Silk, Rubedo Leather, Platinum, Oko, Basic Style Mats, and random alchemy mats, from time to time.

Even with surveys and hirelings factored in, the only writ that is truly self sustaining seems to be provisioning.

Now of course, the more you play, and especially the more you farm, the more toons you can sustain doing writs without buying mats, but its going to be an issue for anyone that does a lot of writs to some degree.

Personally, I dont really farm mats, and have been kinda stockpiling surveys for the last 6 months or so. I do writs on 10 toons most days, and I have to buy all of the above from time to time, ruby ash and rubedite ingots being the most common.

To the OP: Yes it would be better if Oko werent so prevalent in the writ table. It is very similar to how nirnroot used to be.

Do daily writs on 13 characters, I don't break down the runes I get rewarded from the writs but I do those I get plus the essences from casual gathering + surveys. Oko is one of my lowest counts I have but it's only 1/3 less of others without buying them. I have over 600 Oko.
Each has hirelings maxed, ten also shadowy supplier.

What I have constant trouble keeping up with is Mudcrab Chitin. Always having to buy them.

One third of the writs are for health glyphs. At enchanting levels 1,4,7, and 10, the day that asks for a magicka glyph also asks for an Oko rune. At those levels you're using 2 every 3 days. I keep my characters that aren't doing top level enchanting at a different level to spread the demand across runes.

That is the rub. Does ZOS balance the game for the mass producers, which would flood the market for everyone else, or do they keep the market of regular users in the fore front. By flood, I mean prices drop to the point where it is not worth listing the things. Thereby creating a market where cheap items are rare and difficult to find.

The Oko rune gets used by 1/3 of the daily writs to make the glyph, but is also frequently the other "obtain" half of a writ. So in one cycle of three, you use up (nearly) two Oko, four Ta, one Makko, one Deni, and one of something else. The Ta rune drops from every other runestone, so you get plenty coming in, but Oko isn't favoured in the drops as much as its use requires. It drops at the same rate as Makko, and Deni, despite being used about twice as often.

Rakeipa are another problem rune, if you are furnishing, as so many light sources need them. It would be better if both Oko and Rakeipa had higher rates.

That's because you can get oko in survey maps. Nirnroot you only get though occasional rewards from daily writs or you had to farm them. Totally non-self sustainable.

It's all RNG. For me Oko is third highest after Ta and Jejota. I don't rely on my hirelings for basic crafting materials and gather while in the open world.

Oko runes were not a problem for me, until the last two mini-trials, that don't have any trash that drop white glyphs. Previously, the trials all had enough trash in there, and there'd be enough Glyphs of Health in the loot to sustain me. Now, doing those two trials, I don't get any of them, so Oko has become another pinch point.

Personally, I don't think writs should be self sustainable even with hirelings and surveys. I don't think you should have to grind either, but still pick up a few extra materials every once in a while to continue daily writs. I only have 4 characters that I do daily writs on, with all hirelings. I regularly run through the surveys collected, but only on my one character that has all the crafting levels maxed out. I decon all glyphs found or received through turning in the daily writs. I generally don't go out of my way to farm any of the materials but will sometimes stop and pick some up if they are on my path to wherever it is I'm going. Actually, I will go slightly out of my way to farm runestones or Psijic portals. With all that being said, the only 2 things I regularly run out of are style materials for the equipment dailies and Oko runes. At least that's all I run out of now that they rejiggered the requirements for the lower level equipment daily writs.

I started running out of Oko and needing to buy them in the guild stores some months ago.

Long before that, I noted it was easier to stock up on cheap stacks of Makko and Deni than of Oko.

ZoS should rebalance the requirements, much as they did for Nirnroot.

I do writs on 15 toons and have never come close to running out of Oko. Maybe i'm just lucky but i still have about 800 of them.

Whether the OP does "too many" crafting writs or not, it IS a balance issue with the writs. It's very similar to the cloth/leather issue. The nature of how they designed the writs pushes an unnatural balance.

I always wondered why Enchanting was the only one that had only 3 different writs when we have dozens of combinations. I have 10x the # of other runes then the runes for health/magick/stamina. and the health one always seems to be the lowest.

And yes, it is more severe for the people who do more writs. It's not the supply, it's the design of the wrist being unbalanced that causes it. If they simply added 4-5 more run combinations to the writs, the issue would be almost eliminated. And this wouldn't be hard to do...they really haven't changed crafting writs much since they're inception, they could easily look at adding a few more combinations to the quests.

So to the OP: I agree. There's an issue with the writ setup, and it has an easy fix. add it to the other dozen issues I have with the writ system.

Huh, I never even pay attention to the spare rune in the writ. Now you all have me wondering if I should what my ratios are sitting at.

Edit: well it turns out they are 30% less than Deni or Makko. Still I don't do as many writs, and I farm my own mats, so I'm not really in danger of running out.

I don't know how many Oko I have. Right now, I'm not running out (which is all I know about it at this point, as I'm not in game and I'm not getting in just to check that - I'll post back tomorrow....) even doing 12 girls for writs ever day. Actually, the only thing I ran out of was.... Jora. And after boosting everyone to use Jera - I had to buy some of those about a month later. And I might have to buy some again, because they don't drop much or show up much in Proteans, and I'm NOT going to boost again - there's no reason to keep "upgrading" the skill on 10 girls who just do writs to add to my bank balance!

I have one girl I'm pointing at Master writs who uses Edora right now, and one who got leveled up to Odra before I realized I had a hard time playing her (stamblade which doesn't agree too well with my ping....) I have plenty of both of those. So far. I don't seem to be iffy about Oko, Deni, Makko when I look at them - I think I probably have several hundred of each, and I know I have 1.5k Ta.

Except when levelling my toons I have never had to buy a rune, except for prismatic that is, but Oko, I got 1,000's with no effort, just do the enchanting maps.

Alchemy, I run out of mudcrab chitan a lot. Nitshade can run out, maybe a couple of other ones.

Provisioning, I never run out of anything anymore.

Everything else (except Rubedo Leather) runs out every 2-3 days, maps don't supply enougth, I only really farm Rubedo leather, an 'accidental' bonus from my gold grind . Ancestor Silk is my bane.
