Why is fishing not more popular?

  • VerboseQuips

To make fishing more interesting, they could...

--Add some way to craft fishing lures to target a specific rare fish (So take, say, 1 Salmon Roe + 1 Worms + 1 Jute to craft a 'tadpole' lure which would increase the odds you'd catch a Muskie in Auridon, while 1 Chub + 1 Insect Parts + 1 Jute would make a 'flying fish' lure that increases the odds of catching a Bristlemouth. Lures for blue fish take slightly more mats).
--Add a Motif as a random drop, because hey, we have to grind for them with every OTHER activity in the game. I'm going to say Dreughshell, since they're aquatic and it was in Morrowind so why not?
--Have some way to speed up casting. Tap left-left-up to make Ocean fish bite faster, to mimic real fishing where you'll reel in the bait in different ways to make your lure look 'alive'
--Also give us something to do with the raw fish fillets besides cooking. Let up trade them in for the aforementioned Dreughshell Motif stones maybe.
--Have some quests unlock after you've caught, say, 100 fish.

You could probably add a teeny, tiny chance to reel up some vMA-rivaling superweapon, but that's just cruel. :P

I agree with everything except the superweapon. :D I especially like the Dreugh Shell idea

To this, I'd add that there has been mentions of a Demiprince of fishing serving Hircine. It would be great to have a daily fishing quest from him. Such quests could also lead to another new Motif.

To spice things up a bit, you might have a chance to summon a protector when you fish. (Nearly certain during the daily quest, and with a small probability any time.) There could be an achievement to defeat all the protectors. Protectors could be at the vanilla game world boss level of might, i.e. difficult but not impossible to defeat alone.
If one doesn't like the idea of randomness, one could also have a "golden fishing hole" spawning in each zone at specific positions, like dark anchors. Fishing in it would trigger the intervention of a protector?
Protectors might be stuff like Dreughs, Nereids and so on. They could drop a Nereid/Leimineid skin or costume. Upon dying, they might leave a fishing hole with nice rewards?

Also, the passive that speeds resource gathering could very well speed up the fishing too.

    This is a good idea.

Also, they should have put the Maomer motif as a drop (as a chance in the wet sacks) for fishing instead of a crown crate exclusive

There is always room to add more, but I have to say that I love fishing as it is already. It's a pleasant occasional break from higher stress activities that allows me to kick back, enjoy the scenery, slowly complete some achievements that I want (I'm about 2/3 of the way toward Master Angler after 18 months), and sometimes even group up with and enjoy some conversation with a fellow angler. One day, I will be proud to add that fishing boat to the front yard of my house. The rate of perfect roe acquisition is not high, but feels about right to me. It compensates me for fishing, but doesn't turn fishing into the ESO equivalent of Destiny's Loot Cave.

I (we) really think you all should take a look at some of the suggestions. Certain types of Motifs as possible drops is an excellent one. Having events either in particular regions once or twice a month, or just by Alliance maybe. That would probably work better.

Heck, a craftable, upgradeable fishing pole that would increase rare chances.

Yeah, I'd love it if they added more incentives to fishing and there's some great ideas in this thread. I only got Master Angler for the boat and title, but now that I have those, I don't ever fish anymore. Maybe I'd try to get the title again for my main (for some reason, I did it on an alt) but without more rewards for the time, I just can't bring myself to do it.

Please update fishing, ZOS! I'd love a skill line and/or upgrading rods and I'd really like drops other than underwhelming sacks and a million housing fish. Make me want to fish again!

Honestly, the only thing I would change is to make caught bait give you a higher chance of rare fish. For the life of me, I can't figure out why it wasn't designed this way in the first place.

Otherwise, leave it as something only us weirdo masochists do.

I think they could add some "combat encounters" to help break-up the monotony of fishing. Perhaps you accidentally hook a dreugh, or a giant mudcrab, maybe even tougher creatures that provide better loot. They could even add an overland set connected to fishing if they really wanted.

A more outlandish idea would be deep-sea fishing instances, where players could go out at sea, but I think this wouldn't be much fun unless there were added functionality that I'm not sure if the game engine could even handle. Think player-owned boats, PvP "raiding" areas (pirates!), quest lines, random encounters, islands to explore, world bosses, etc. That would be extremely cool, you could build an entire chapter around these ideas which would tie in nicely with either the Maormer or Sload. But once again, not even sure if the game engine could even do such things.

I can tell you why I'm losing my patience with fishing:
    1) Not enough {expletive} worms. I know there aren't many ocean fish, but seriously? I've got 120 in my bag, but over 1k+ each of every other freaking bait including...

    2) Sick and tired of catching bait all the time!

    3) And gummy sacks!

    4) And furniture? FURNITURE??!! REALLY?

    5) Casting guts in what's really a foul and casting crawlers which is really a lake, rendering the "used bait" option to lock the spot.

    6) Sick and tired of catching bait all the time. Yeah, yeah, but it bears repeating! If the caught bait had ANY influence on improving fish catching, I wouldn't complain, but it's no different than the non-caught bait.

    7) Finally, not many people doing it, which takes longer to get my list checked off.

There's not much tied to fishing other than the unique furniture items you can acquire (seashells, etc) some dye colors and I think there's a title?

If they added something like a fisherman costume for full completion of everything or more dillies it would probably appeal to people to do it.

Besides the costume, a few other things that would be great would be trophies. Complete a region like Auridon and get a trophy to put in your house of the rarest fish you had to fish up for the achievement. More furnishings like whalebone/fishbone furniture, marine skeletons, sunken 'treasures' (treasure chests, giant clams with pearls, statues), and could definitely see fishing becoming quite popular with a mount that could only be gotten through fishing (don't know how likely that would happen though).

It needs an overhaul and more elements added to it. I'm going to make a writeup with my suggestions sometimes soon.

I did actually get around to write a rather comprehensive list of suggestions on how to make fishing more enjoyable, engaging and rewarding, which also gathered a fair bit of positive feedback among the master anglers of the game.

If ZOS needs any ideas or inspiration on how to make the fishing minigame more fleshed out, there are several suggestions to pick from in there.

    Yes! Its boring!

I have two characters full of blue and green fishes and they began to smells bad because I cannot take the fishes anymore.

Back to 2014/2015 I put every(!) fish I caught with my main to my both characters, each green and blue. After your bad idea/decision that collectives cannot share between characters I just gave up.

I wrote many tickets that this decision is bad but nothing happened. Sent also a video

Why should I fish? I dont want waste my space with fishes in my main inventory . And why give us only 5 achievment points?

Please revert the changes for collectives!

First, the mechanic itself is boring and unexciting. Second, as many others pointed out, the rewards are bad.

Beside other suggestions that are already posted here, would be nice to have a showcase for collectibles like rare fishes and monster trophies on a special tab, similar with Rift and EverQuest. This won't make the fishing more interesting but will be nice.

I love fishing as a mini-game in MMOs but in ESO it absolutely sucks. It's so boring I sometimes started falling asleep while sitting up. That's not something I'm ever prone to. Some games did fishing great like Archeage, LOTRO and even FF14. ESO is not one of them, sadly. It needs a serious injection of fun.

I've said this before but I'll throw it out there again.

Integrate treasure maps into fishing spots. Make them on a tier level. So for instance, tier 1-5. The higher the tier the tougher the map is to complete but the better the rewards will be.

So I have a tier 5 map to some random fishing hole. When I fish it up, with it comes a bunch of baddies. Defeat said evil minions, loot chest.

People that played UO back in the day will know what I'm talking about.

I want a taxidermist added that will take your collectible and for a small fee convert it into a furnishing item.

I've been holding on to over 60 of the rare fish in the slim hope that something like it will come along. I would love to convert my goronir estate into a fish bowl filled with magrove shark, heinous gar, lamprey, eel, trout, salmon, etc.

Even better if the taxidermist included the other collectibles too. A twitching draugr hand at the bottom of the fish bowl. Inert egg. Crackling lodestone. Chattering skull. And so on.

The Place by Tony Walsh Please Read
This is the place in the North West of England

It’s ace, it’s the best and the songs that we sing

From the stands, from our bands set the whole planet shaking

Our inventions are legends! There’s nowt we can’t make and

So we make brilliant music. We make brilliant bands

We make goals that make souls leap from seats in the stands

And we make things from steel and we make things from cotton

And we make people laugh, take the mick summat rotten

And we make you at home and we make you feel welcome

And we make summat happen, we can’t seem to help it

And if you’re looking for history then yes, we’ve a wealth

But the Manchester way is to make it yourself

And make us a record, a new number one

And make us a brew while you’re up, love. Go on!

And make us feel proud that you’re winning the league

And make us sing louder and make us believe it

that this is the place that has helped shape the world

And that this the place where a Manchester girl

Name of Emmeline Pankhurst from the streets of Moss Side

Led a Suffragette City with sisterhood pride

And this is the place with appliance of science

We’re on it, atomic, we strut with defiance

In the face of a challenge we always stand tall

Mancunians in union delivered it all

Such as housing and libraries, and health, education

And unions and co-ops, the first railway station

So we’re sorry! Bear with us! We invented commuters!

But we hope you forgive us – we invented computers!

And this is the place Henry Royce strolled with Rolls

And we’ve rocked and we’ve rolled with our own Northern Soul

And so this is the place to do business, then dance

Where go-getters and goal setters know they’ve a chance

And this is the place where we first played as kids

And me Mam lived and died here, she loved it she did

And this is the place where our folks came to work

Where they struggled in puddles, they hurt in the dirt

And they built us a city. They built us these towns

And they coughed on the cobbles to the deafening sound

Of the steaming machines and the screaming of slaves

They were scheming for greatness, they dreamed to their graves

And they left us a spirit, they left us a vibe

The Mancunian Way to survive and to thrive

And to work and to build, to connect and create and

Greater Manchester’s greatness is keeping it great

And so this is the place now we’ve kids of our own

Some are born here, some drawn here but we all call it home

And they’ve covered the cobbles, but they’ll never defeat

All the dreamers and schemers who still teem through these streets

Because this is a place that has been through some hard times

Oppressions, recessions, depressions and dark times

But we keep fighting back with Greater Manchester spirit

Northern grit, northern wit in Greater Manchester’s lyrics

And there’s hard times again in these streets of our city

But we won’t take defeat and we don’t want your pity

Because this a place where we stand strong together

With a smile on our face, Mancunians Forever

And we’ve got this* as the place where a team with a dream (*Forever Manchester)

Can get funding and something to help with their scheme

Because this is the place that understands your grand plans

We don’t do No Can Do, we just stress Yes We Can!

Forever Manchester’s a charity for people round ‘ere

You can fundraise, donate. You can be a volunteer

You can live local, give local. We can honestly say

We do charity differently, that Mancunian Way

And we fund local kids, and we fund local teams

We support local dreamers to work for their dreams

We support local groups and the great work they do

So can you …help us help… local people like you?

Because this is the place in our hearts, in our homes

Because this is the place that’s a part of our bones

‘Cos Greater Manchester gives us such strength from the fact

That this is the place. We should give something back.

Always remember. Never forget. Forever Manchester.
