Sadly some changes were not for the better. The Weapon variety in Morrowind is far superior, no spellcrafting in Skyrim and less Armor pieces with each main Title - just to name a few.

I see where you are coming from and agree that The Elder Scrolls Online should still feel like an Elder Scrolls game in the end. I don't want every mechanic from Souls/Borne be implemented here, just some adjustments to light and heavy attacks in terms of moveset and weight. In my opinion there should be more than 'right swing' and 'left swing'. Giving weapons an identity outside of skills is nothing I would consider bad or anti-TES. Dark Souls hits the nail when it comes to weapon weight - swinging a 1h sword looks and feels like swinging a 1h sword, swinging Greatsword looks and feels like swinging a Greatsword. "It just works" our lord and savior Godd Howard would say! Did you light attack with a Greatsword in this game? Not really fun to do and watch unfold - if you ask me. A lot of people also didn't look at The Elder Scrolls and said "Y'know I wish this franchise played more like an MMORPG with Skills, PvP and Trials" and here we are! Was it a bad decision? For some yes - we're still hated for "letting this game, which is not even TES stay alive" and "prevent the development of TES 6". We both probably love this game and disagree with those claims.

Eh Spellcrafting wasn't a huge loss for me. Classic ES Spells skill lines like Alteration, illusion, Conjuration are still up for debate and testing. Would be nice to see.
Spears would be nice, as would Crossbows and using both 1h & Spells.
Armor pieces having been split to a reasonable amount in ESO.
Morrowind Split it too much, Skyrim reduced it too much. ESO has just the right amount.

As to Dark Souls, No. It's not that I think it's impossible. It's that I don't think it would be enjoyable. I have imagined it, if Skyrim or ESO played like Dark Souls I would be irritated with the exaggerated and slow combat. Especially if I was playing in First person
Sorry I know everyone has their preferences but I don't think they hit the nail on the head. I don't like the feeling of the weight in combat in Dark Souls at all.

in ESO, Skills has greatly increased the variety of what a player can do in a fight. imo combat is way more exciting in ESO than in Skyrim.
Light & heavy attacks help but if that is what players had to mainly rely on then gameplay would get stale and old really fast, and if they changed the animations to be exaggerated and slow like Dark Souls alot of people, including myself, would be unhappy.

While this is Elder Scrolls its still an MMO.
This isn't "Skyrim Online", never was. Its an MMO that takes place in Elder Scrolls, that being said they take what they can from the single player titles without letting the player become a God.
I think ESO maintains a healthy balance between MMO and Elder Scroll mechanics.
Also imo, the Dungeons and Trials are some of the best content of the game in terms of gameplay and challenge.

For example Guild Wars 1 had a neat feature where you could draw on the minimap to plan tactics with your group. This would work really well in difficult dungeons and Cyrodiil.

I would like to see a companion system added similar to SWTOR or Final Fantasy 11. Those always bring more depth to the characters and make solo play more interesting.

It would also enable the developers to make the landscape content more difficult because newer players could use companions to help them.

ff11 only did that because the community pretty much shrank to 1 server from the original 24.

Things from other Elder Scrolls Games that might be nice in Online:
    • Revamp vampirism. Contractable from any and all vampires/bloodfiends in the game, and more pertinent consequences like being wanted by the guards at stage four.
    • More classes and/or classlessness. Back in the day, you could pick a class template, but really your character was freeform. This, unfortunately, is not likely to happen given the game chooses to combine PvE and PvP.
    • More schools of magic. We have restoration staves and destruction staves. What about illusion staves, alteration staves, and conjuration staves?
    • More weapon types. Previous games have had polearms, unarmed combat, one handed, and one handed plus spell styles. Why not in this game?
    • Attributes. Meaningful attributes like personality and agility were removed in Skyrim, dumbing down traditional RPG elements. Bringing this back would require significant overhaul, however, and is not likely to happen.
    • More non-combat skills. Remember athletics and how it impacted your running speed? Or acrobatics impacting jump height and fall damage? Yeah, I miss those.

Ehh, Elder Scrolls combat was always kinda subpar to be honest. Sometimes even horrible... Morrowind is one of my favorite games ever, but it's combat is just bad even for its time. Skyrim is slightly better in terms of combat, but it's basically a button masher with no strategy involved. It's not even realistic, especially sword and shield animations. It's just very bland and uninspired.
Yeah, combat is not the main focus of these games, but I still wish it would be more fun to play.

I'd agree. Even though combat doesn't seem to be their main focus it needs to be IMO. The majority of things we do in MMO is fight things and if it's not entertaining people will look elsewhere. You can have all the best stories in the world but if the combat is bland it gets boring pretty quick.Add on that thsi is a MMO and they want to retain their players for years versus a few months, I'd say its a critical portion of the game.

I agree that it's better than Skyrim (it doesnt mean much, Skyrim combat is quite bland), but I think it could be improved.
I know that endgame requires tactics, I cleared all hardmodes except for vCR. But the majority of content doesnt, and high-end content also has it's issues. For example, all stamina builds and all magicka builds are very similar, and a lot animations are too stiff or too wonky.

"Mark" and "Recall" spells from morrowind

Yes, and that's been in Ultima Online for two decades.

The costume system from Lord of the Rings Online where you just drop garments you find or acquire into outfit slots set a standard in this area. The current system is simply a gold drain and another way to extend the content through the achievement/motif grinding treadmill. There's a solid revenue stream in LotRO system too. You pay for costume slots.

The justice system from THIS GAME that you designed but failed to release would remove the most glaring, repugnant blight that infects every town in this digital world every damned day. Mow down nuns in the street in single player GTA all you want; doesn't matter. But when acts of mindless murder occur ad nauseam with other people present you diminish the value of your IP and the blithe tolerance of it by players diminishes them as well. There is not an atom of multiplayer gaming in it.

And, yes, as others have noted, the character models are dated but that's beyond any easy or even feasible remedy. But you can start with the hair. Countless games have moved beyond the dated articulated mesh for hair that's little more than a helmet. Where it reaches the level of the ludicrous is that barbarian windswept crown store hairstyle that some people actually use not knowing quite how absurd it looks.

This game is so exquisitely beautiful in so, so many ways. It makes hair helmets stand out even more, alas.

Another feature from Ultima Online that would be grand is NO CASTING SPELLS IN TOWN. This should include summoning sorc pets and those damned annoying warden bears. They are not needed in town plus there's the practical matter of difficulty in selecting the banker or turning in writs amidst clusters of unnecessary pets.

I mean it when I say I don't like my own negative tone in much of this post. I adore this game world. And I can certainly live with helmet hair, a so-so costume system, characters with fixed expressions on their faces and annoying leaping fools firing off spells in banks and shoving their hideous sorc pets and obese warden bears in my face.

But I have to leave the game periodically because I cannot abide profligate mindless murder, simulated though it may be, by players who have accepted my dueling invitations in response to their behavior just once in years.
