Yes I definitely understand your struggle when thinking of names. Takes me a long time especially if its a main character.

Usually I try to make them lore friendly to a point, but also want them to be unique. Typically I will decide on the first letter of the name, or a sound within it, and then build the name around that.

For more minor things like pet and mount names, its super easy to resort to using a latin translation of something interesting, and making a name from that

so I could have as other names:

I go lore friendly all the way. Though my main, a Redguard named Tan'Afriel, is an alteration of an old WoW name of mine. And I have but don't play an Argonian named Leaf-Over-Ants-Nest because that's how I kept hearing a famous pianist's name on the radio

My rough-life Imperial nightblade is Secunda Mani, bowdlerized Latin for Second Hand. And my Breton DK is Donnery Bettensham, an altered Donari Mal di Bette from my GW2 main. My khajiit Warden is S'Talanhi (spelling?), a khajiiterized version of Talani, which I have used in the past for wild living clawed characters. My haughty Imperial Templar is Caelia Maxim, just to sound snooty latin. Oh, and my Altmer sorc is a remake of my WoW belf mage and shares her name of Issaela di'Anar.

I think that's all of them. Just typing this out whilst shedding bounty for apples.

Graydon - because that’s my name.
Bray - because it’s cool name
Zesk - because I was running out of names.

Name of main character was a no brainer as I can't pick Dovahkiin here, next best was DocDova.
Sub character so far only serve inventory purpose, so named them as 'toon a for dova' 'armor toon' or 'weapon toon'.

All of my playing characters have Casdha for a sir name. My main's first name is my middle name leaving a letter out, my others playing characters have a first name of some obscure god from doing internet searches and my Mules elude to that role with Casdha in the mix.

edit-side note: Casdha according to google translate is Irish for Turn 2 or two. I've used that since 1999 and you couldn't put a number in the character name. click the link below to see.

I pick names I like that seem to go with the character I created. I use Dunmer last names for those but otherwise it all depends. I use translation sites to find words I like within a theme of moon, shadows, darkness, things like that and I got stuck on Italian early. Thus I have Scura di Notte or Shadow of Night.

My ESO characters are a family. The names of my eso characters are actually just taken from the book I'm writing. (So still made up by myself

)

Dracane is my main, Dynastreth my mother, Aurocano my father, Viridane my sister.
Then we also have the dark "twin" so to say, with the very creative name..... Darkane.

My main toon is named Scissorz. The rest are variations of german phrases like Sturm Und Drang or relating to star systems ie: Sirius Like the Star or Proxima Centauri. I also have a healer named Godmode, and a Stamblade named Terror.

I have a hard time choosing names. I have ran through so many in this game. For a while, it was a combo of something lore friendly and something dark and spooky and tough. Then it was just lore friendly. Then it was lets Darknova everything. Then I changed my mind again. Basically what I am saying is I never make up my mind and I don't have a go to handle. I also super admire all you creative folks out there with such awesome names. You guys are amazing!

Most my 6 characters are Khajiit, and I really just give them names I make up that sound exotic. Argonian is same way, but my Dunmer I tried to fit a story to. All of them didn't take much effort though.

Tazrah. Shares the name with my old Skyrim character.

Katt Blade. When I first made her I was just testing what a Nightblade was like, so I halfhearted called her Katt, cause she's a Cat. But I love her now, and even though I like the name Katt, the name change tokens are too expensive.

Dehyesha. This girl shares a name of the Main Character in a Science Fiction series of Novels I read back in Highschool. Schism, by Catharine Asaro.

Tazanni. She's the fighter, the more robust of my girls. Came up with a name inspired by the ones I come across in-game from the NPCs.

Tsah-Zee. You can probably guess that's my Argonian.

And Teva Hlaalu. Teva followed two of my rules for naming. I love the letter 'T', and it's short and sweet. I then placed her in one of the Great Houses that I, more or less, tolerate. House Hlaalu are more "friendly" of the other Races out of necessity, so my girl fits there best.

If my characters names dont seem exactly lore friendly, this is mainly because most of them came from outside Elder Scrolls.

Except Runinkar. He was one of my Skyrim characters. Dressed him up as Thalmor and used the console commands to place him in the Thalmor faction. Made an interesting playthrough.

Aleksandr, Alisiah and Ivan have been my standard three in almost every rpg I play for a very long time now.

Anyone familiar with Lukyanenko books knows Zavulon.

Alex is another one of my long time rpg characters. His real last name is Konstantinov, but for some reason (maybe length?) I couldnt enter the entire name, so I shortened it to Konstan.

Ak'suhp was named when I made a khajiit character, and was trying to think up a name for him. I heard a cough noise and turned to see what my own cat was doing, and the name just hit me.

Amaris name was based on a character from a very good Skyrim fanfic that I read a long time ago.

Fateless One is a copy of my character from Kingdom of Amalur. Not a very popular game, but I enjoyed it very much.

Salvatore I am not going to discuss, some people are way too easily offended.

And Vito is a character in a story that I am currently writing myself.

The coding itself, certainly. In-class even. It was originally designed to work with Japanese Names (which due to the manner of their construction work in a very similar fashion). It was a lovely example of the use of tries and radix trees. It just happened to have this secondary use.

The Dunmeri name list construction and post-analysis selection was, I hasten to add, all in my own time.

I am always impressed (and enjoy seeing) characters have clever names that are a play on something, but never have really come up with one of my own.

I have been playing MMOs for so long that I now have names I consider my "MMO" names, and just always use variations of those. My first name I got lucky with a fantasy name generator. My second name came from me searching for alternate words for "fire" because I made a toon with red hair. And so on. My names don't really mean anything about my characters now, in ESO, but are just names I always use.

I tried, once, in ESO to make a character specific name. I made an Argonian NB healer called Heals-in-Peace. When I got into PvP, I changed race and name to Snipes-in-Peace. Now I'd like to re-purpose the toon for PvE but the name doesn't fit for what I want to do, and I don't want to pay for another name change.

Making tailored names per character just isn't for me. :P

I usually use a name generator for the particular raceof my character to get a name that has some affiliation to my own irl name. Like certain initials or a syllable. Usually doesnt take more than 5 to 10 minutes to get something i am happy with.

I try to make them lore friendly and not just randoms.
