What if full length mirrors are available as 1st person, and you could turn your head like you would in real life, to check out the other side of your character.

Nice idea, but is that ever going to happen? Actually it would be good to be able to see your toon full frontal (excuse the expression) at the flick of a button without breaking stride. :)

Third person as it allows me to see more of landscape and avoid danger. First person is only useful when I can not interact with objects or when I need to have closer look at things in game.

Some skills are also easier to use when like teleport abilities or AoE need to be placesd in distance. There are some problems in third person where bulls eye (centre of screen) isn't exactly on target and then it will not work to use that skill. I guess that ESO where designed with first person view as the main way of target objects in game and not third person.

depends on the type of mmo, shooters first, eso third - that being said - first person view is one of the MAJOR appeals to me of the TES single player series - i don't know if i'd play them if they were third person only...within an mmo environment it's just less feasible

Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.

Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

It depends on the game. Generally speaking.

Specifically, ESO: a) has a high frequency of combat attacks and skills (attack weaving); b) depends to a significant degree on manually targeted attacks and manually placed AoEs; c) lacks an auto-target system; d) is replete with boss fights in relatively small areas where AoE avoidance is at a premium (and I am not even mentioning PVP).

By definition in a game like this one wants to have the best visibility possible, especially from the standpoint of targeting but also avoiding enemy attacks. One's mileage may vary, but after trying to manage it via 1st person for quite a while I finally switched to 3rd person and never looked back (in fact, accidentally switching back from 3rd to 1st in combat due to the default controller mapping - and some key-binding menu stupidity where certain default controls don't even show up on the list - has become my number one in-combat annoyance since the visibility reduction "feels" to be very substantial).

Compare and contrast with, say, TOR or LOTRO, both of which are really using the WoW model. Auto-targeting skills and attacks; significant global cooldown (essentially, no weaving so ~half of ESO's button presses per unit of time); at least some fights take place in very, very wide open areas...the pace of combat is a lot different, and often enough comes down to moving into range then typing in a sequence of numbers corresponding to a skill rotation while generally looking in the enemy's direction. In conditions like these, 1st person works exceedingly well in my experience.

TLDR - ESO essentially "forced" me to switch from 1st to 3rd, and that's just the nature of the game. Which I do not see changing over the visible future. Which, of course, does not forbid anyone from playing in 1st person "just because".

If I could vote, I'd say both. In every other MMO I've always played in third person but with Elder Scrolls games, first person view just feels more natural and enjoyable for me, especially in ESO.

Edit: They both have their advantages/disadvantages. 3rd person does seem more logical for certain situations though.

I prefer first person but it puts you at a huge disadvantage in game especially in pvp and dungeons.

if you play on pc you can use this mod to make it automatic for different activities.

I definitely like being able to switch between 1st and 3rd person especially being able to zoom the view in or out.I guess if I had to choose one or the other I would say id rather play in 3rd person because it gives a much better view of the game world than 1st person does and in some games being able to see your characters whole body during combat makes the mechanics look a lot better.

During beta,or maybe alpha, I wasn't playing yet. This game looked a lot like a traditional MMO. Third person only, and ability bar always up.

From what I have read about it, a lot of Elder Scrolls fans of the single player games really hated it.

This led to the minimal UI, and an option for first person after most of the game was already completed.

That probably explains why the first person seems like an afterthought in this game.

    Edit: phone typos.

    Not true

All ESO games offer the ability to move the camera from 1st to third for the players choice ...

Or at least oblivion, skyrim and even the fallout series allowed it, however 3rd person has always been the dominant camera angle

Why on earth would you play an MMO or just about any RPG as first person? What is this, a FPS?

The entire point of such games is to customize your character the way you want it, especially outwardly.

Why the hell would you need character customization menu whenever you make a hero if you spend the rest of the game looking around your hands and forearms?

I used to play FPS, that's how I played original TES games. Later I switched to third person, because it's way easier to see AOEs and have better idea of positions of your team and enemies.

But as somebody said, if ESO or any other MMO would be FPS only, I would have no problem, because all would have the same advantages and/or disadvantages. FPS adds extra layer of skill imho.

3rd person all the way. What’s the point of having all sorts of customization in these games when all you see is someone’s mitts and elbows 90% of the time? Destiny, I’m looking at you.

Waste of art design and doesn’t connect me with the character at all.

i played the skyrim remastered just before i dicovered eso and guess what, i played till level 30-40ish in first person view until i got an armour set thats grants a shield when wearing 5 pieces. The shield wasnt looking nice when in first person view so i switched to 3rd person. It took me a while to get used to it but its the only way i play now. Finally i was able to see the big red spots under me
The only time i switch to first person now is when i take a closer look at other players.

    Third person. For situational awareness.

What makes an FPS MMO-ish game like Destiny work with first person is the radar for situational awareness. There's no radar in ESO, so third person makes more sense.

I'm starting to like third person more and more over time. In an MMO I'd always prefer third person, but in the single player TES games I use third person based on clunkiness. TESO is the least clunky, followed by Skyrim and then Oblivion. When I play Oblivion recently I'm always surprised at how clunky third person view feels, but I still use it sometimes.
