Why is fishing not more popular?

Rewards are meh. But it's not meant to be a main feature. It's a distraction like *I like M'aiq* or *Crime Pays*. It's something to do when you get bored but still want to play the game. Which was what hooked me on all of the Elderscrolls games. (except Arena... didnt like arena)

One of my guilds ran a Drunk Fishing night (you didn't have to drink alcohol). The rules were:
    White fish - nothing special
Green fish - you take a drink
Blue fish - you name someone to take a drink
    Wet Sack - everyone drinks!

We were in TeamSpeak and you had to call out what you caught. Made fishing much better!

Fishing is boring! Pressing "E" and waiting for animation to press "E" again is not fun! And it's *** rng what you get even with right bait!

A truth - there are few things as valuable in this world as a quiet mind at peace. It is a power, it makes you resilient...the calm in a storm, gravitas, etc. It isn't just a tree hugger thing. Think samurai.
Just because we can't find zen in a video game doesn't mean we're "too caffeinated" or filled with "ego-driven noise". I spend most of my day staring at screens; when I want to shut off my mind, I turn them all off and go for a walk by the sea or in a forest. Real life has very lovely vistas too, you know. Much more relaxing than staring at my PC like a zombie and repeatedly pressing the E key.

Walk by the sea and through the forest at night, during the winter,, with work to get to early the next morning often do ya?

While you are doing that I'll be at some stream or ocean in game...staring like a zombie (hah) at my screen hitting X.

Anyway. Lots of folks find real fishing boring too. Maybe do it once in a while. I fish often, both in game and out. You don't do either for the "action" or the...whats the word that has been used in the thread? Productivity? For goodness sakes you spend so much more pulling a fish out of the water than the grocery store when its all said and done.

You fish because its fun to fish. Not the doodads, not the boat. The sitting still and fishing.

That, on the whole, ain't a 20 something thing. Just the truth is all, no trigger intended.

Yeah a few things could make it better.

Sunken chests (different rarity) - White = simple chest etc... They could basically act like usual open world chests with a chance to get zone appropiate gear from them.

Lost lockboxes - Again different tiers , have gold in, treasure maps , lockpics, higher chance of getting rare motif's?

Gold tier fish - Every fishing spot has a chance to catch a gold tier fish which has 2 perfect roe in? Make it like a 1 in 300 chance or something to catch it.

Chance to pull up some alchemy mats such a nirnroot or water hyciath when you get a fish.

    Just a few things.
To make fishing more interesting, they could...

--Add some way to craft fishing lures to target a specific rare fish (So take, say, 1 Salmon Roe + 1 Worms + 1 Jute to craft a 'tadpole' lure which would increase the odds you'd catch a Muskie in Auridon, while 1 Chub + 1 Insect Parts + 1 Jute would make a 'flying fish' lure that increases the odds of catching a Bristlemouth. Lures for blue fish take slightly more mats).
--Add a Motif as a random drop, because hey, we have to grind for them with every OTHER activity in the game. I'm going to say Dreughshell, since they're aquatic and it was in Morrowind so why not?
--Have some way to speed up casting. Tap left-left-up to make Ocean fish bite faster, to mimic real fishing where you'll reel in the bait in different ways to make your lure look 'alive'
--Also give us something to do with the raw fish fillets besides cooking. Let up trade them in for the aforementioned Dreughshell Motif stones maybe.
--Have some quests unlock after you've caught, say, 100 fish.

You could probably add a teeny, tiny chance to reel up some vMA-rivaling superweapon, but that's just cruel. :P

The suggestions in the above quoted replies would add a myriad of fun to fishing.

In addition, rare sea themed pets or water globes containing such pets that could be displayed in the upcoming housing, such as starfish; octopi; sea turtles; slaughter fish; sharks; squirting clams; mini whales; walrus; baby seals etc.

Also, why not fish up some fishing related gear like a fishing hats; different types of fishing garments; special rods; unique tackle all of which could slightly increase odds of catching rarer fish.

Fishing competitions and leader boards with some tangible rewards.

Something that comes to mind whilst fishing and musing over this thread - I think a lot of folks go up to a fishing hole in game, press the button and either stare at the spot and hope to get that gree or blue fish, tapping their foot. Or while multi tasking or something.

Doesn't it occur to to folks to look around?

I mean really now. Its why for the third time I will urge folks, turn off the music of the game. Turn sound effects way, way down. Turn ambient all the way up. Turn up master volume.

And look around while fishing. Most of the time do this.

Maybe you had to have text based games as a kid or the 16 color games as a teenager, but Elder Scrolls Online is beautiful. And there are so many lovely areas tucked away in the game if you slow down and take it in. And it costs almost nothing, can be done when its cold, dark out, and while waiting for a dungeon to pop.

But shrug, I have no real luck turning folks onto jazz either.

I love fishing! I have 5 master anglers and working on another. I have days that I don't feel like fighting, questing, dungeon running, so I go fishing........it's my quiet, stress-free time. I make a good bit of gold selling perfect roe or ambrosia. I used to buy bait when I first started fishing but I no longer need to.

Fishing isn't nearly rewarding enough, even when you factor in roe.

Fishing also isn't that terribly exciting, as mini-games go, it lacks a lot of features. No skill line, no related equipment, no special things you got to do, other than remember to use the right bait for the right hole. Waiting time is too long between dropping the line and getting anything, you're just sitting there.

And there are too many trash rewards from fishing. Changing 1 type of bait to another type of bait while having wasted half a minute isn't fun, particularly when it happens for the 29846456th time.
Wet sacks are trash in a bag. 99 of 100 times it's a Ta rune or a piece of hemming.

The fishing minigame hasn't had a single development for more than 3 years. The addition of roe is basically the only thing it has going, aside those who do it for the title and achievements.

It needs an overhaul and more elements added to it. I'm going to make a writeup with my suggestions sometimes soon, though right now everything is drowning in noise from the next DLC and outfits.

Source: I'm a Master Angler with every DLC fishing achievement.

Make it a more fun mini-game like Vanguard had or Starwars Galaxies. Now it's the most boring fishing thing one could imagine. Press E, press E, get random crap.

It's boring and no fun. I don't even respect people with master angler title because how stupid can you be doing something you really don't like. Some master angler even said: I am done, I finally have it and I hope I never have to do it again... .

What could be done to improve the popularity of fishing? Or more to the point, bait sales.

    .
I think in circumstances like the one above, if a hint of realism were to be added, it would draw in more people:
    • Let lines be able to get tangled...look at that mess, c'mon now?
    • On the set animation, someone walking behind you at an inappropriate time should be able to get hit in the face with the pole.
    • The occasional miscast...followed by the occasional hook snaring your fishing neighbor.

In all seriousness, people either get loads of bait as it is, or get it free from friends/guildies. Fishing, just like IRL, seems to be one of those things you either do or don't, and there isn't much in between.

I mean, how many Master Anglers still cast a line on a regular basis?

Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

My elf could care less about achievements. In fact she dislikes catching blue or green fish. The only reason she fishes is to make her own soup which boosts her health and magicka and she just loves making all her own food.

Since her needs are not amibitous, she normally only goes for a couple fish per day (8 rations once cooked into soup). So she doesn't spend loads of time with it. That said, while fishing, she thoroughly enjoys looking around and enjoying her surroundings. A wonderful, simple and relaxing little diversion just the way it is.
