Seems like crafted sets are alright to me. They shouldn't all be better than dropped sets or overland sets due to more difficult to get.
Now if you say that dropped items should be able to be transmuted into whatever motif than I 100% am on board with that.
A transmog system would most likely make them more money in the crown store, due to the appeal of changing dropped sets into the latest fashionable style. The game system for converting is already in place, and needs only be expanded from Imperial and Morag Tong. I would be surprised if this isn't something ZOS implements in 2018.
Crafters would be instantly relevant, and it would have nothing to do with the set piece bonuses of dropped vs. crafted.

Motif farming had a short-term revitalized purpose when it affected Master Writ drops, but now that nobody wants or needs Master Writs , it's become almost useless again outside of the occasional friend who wants some obscure style and build.
Crafting is useless? Which game are you playing? Torugs, Shackle, Clever and Julianos are 4 of the most used sets in the game. Almost all magicka sorcs builds use Julianos for dps and almost all tanks use torug's. Hunding's is really good for people who doesn't want to maximize and any serious guild uses Night Mother for trials.
Shackle is probably used in like 80% pvp no cp builds and is also used a lot for cp pvp. So is Clever Alchemist. Even Willow Path has a really good use. I actually use it (Shackle) for my magicka sorc, for my stam sorc and for my healer, cause in no cp the extra stam/stam regen really helps to survive. Of course, you can say I'm a nobody, but just check youtube and you willfind lots and lots of really good people using this sets.
Also, nirhorned is one of, if not the best trait for lots of PVP builds.
Making jewels craftable would break a lot of stuff, IMO, and making jewelry upgradable would kill some trials and dungeons.
Of course, tho, revamping some useless craftable equipment would be really nice

Yes, and why master writ are so useless ? because they increased the price from 10 vouchers to 25 vouchers for purple furnishing plan ... now except you want to get all the furnitures pages in the game ( good luck ) it's just useless ....
I don't know what they plan about these transmute crystal but this should be buyable with voucher.
I'm a master crafter, i learned all 9 traits long ago and right now i'm still chasing after the house motifs but i ask me more and more: Why i do even bother?
3 years and finally zos starts thinking about the possibility to change item appearances and i'm pretty sure they mentioned it in the previous eso lives too from time to time and nothing ever came out of it.
Then you have crown store only motifs which screw crafters even more. Oh you already waste tons of time gathering all motifs instead of enjoying questing, doing dungeons or pvp but now you have to pay with real money earned outside of your freetime. Even more effort is needed for crafting since then.
To make it even worse the grind seems to get harder and harder. Just look at this thread i made some while ago:
https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/366116/how-many-pages-of-the-armiger-motif-have-you-learned#latest
A single page of that motif is more worth than a whole motif book of most styles ( pc eu )
Seriously, who do i spend days worth of time farming motif pages or gathering the gold to buy the rest of the motifs just so i can make sub lvl 50 julianos gear with training and the style doesn't matter for my client since he wears a custome anyway. Maybe 1 of 10 crafting requests which i get ask for over lvl 50 gear. I only get a fraction of the time and gold invested back too on top of it.
Atleast my archivement points looks good...
I would rather stop farming motif all together and just save my money for a manour instead of living in my pathetic ( but wonderful ) twin arches.
Everytime i log in, i spend less and less time because there is no fun pick pocketting and stabbing morrowind citizens ( unless it's really snobby dark elves ) for weeks. I basicly do my daily writs and ask me if i should just log out instead of wasting the next 1 hour to get 0 motif pages and with the knowledge i can start the next motif hunt with clock work city while still getting no reward from knowing all motifs ( except armiger and the crown store ones ).
Why do i even bother?
Just so i can be ready in another 3 years when they maybe add a costume wardrobe or transmog system and people will still wear civilian clothing customes over armour anyway.
Just why do i even bother?

They may be withholding it as a control point. That is, to get people to run particular content.
