Free Ultimate Generation out of Combat?

I think this deserves it's own thread (apologies if someone already posted it). But let's check out this little skill that Warden gets called Betty Netch.

Betty Netch - Call a Betty Netch that restores Magicka over 22 seconds. Gain Major Sorcery, increasing Spell Damage by 20% over 24 seconds. This ability has no cost.
Blue Betty - Call a Betty Netch that restores Magicka over 25 seconds. Gain Major Sorcery, increasing Spell Damage by 20% over 27 seconds. When activated, removes 1 negative effect. This ability has no cost.
Bull Netch – Call a Bull Netch that restores Stamina over 25 seconds. Grants Major Brutality, increasing weapon damage by 20% over 27 seconds, and Major Sorcery, increasing Spell Damage by 20% over 27 seconds. This ability has no cost.

Not bad at all, major Sorcery/Brutality, restores stamina or magicka and costs nothing... that's pretty good... now Zos must have been thinking about how this FREE ability could be made better and then they figured it out.

Let's let this free ability that doesn't require a target to cast generate free ultimate!

Seriously, this is skills is so completely broken it's ridiculous. What are you thinking Zos? @ZOS_GinaBruno

  • Animal Companions
    • Savage Beast: This passive ability now generates Ultimate when you cast an Animal Companion ability, instead of when you deal damage with an Animal Companion ability.
      Developer Comments:
This change will make generating Ultimate from this passive more reliable for Wardens, as it can now proc off non-damaging Animal Companion abilities such as Betty Netch and Falcon’s Swiftness.

Agreed, that's a major change to game mechanics that only Warden has access to. I honestly hope that was an oversight and wasn't intentional. Either way it's pretty bad.

Dont freak out. If the skill now generates ulti out of combat it is a bug. Report it and i guess it will be fixed. Templars and DKs have similar passives. On the DK's one is written that it works only in combat while the templar's one is written "Prism - Casting a Dawn's Wrath ability generates 3 Ultimate. This effect can occur once every 6 seconds."
      Because I can!

Exactly this, and unless anyone has been on pts it should work exactly like the prism passive.

They should clarify if this is the case or not, but it is still a free to cast ability that generates ultimate along with giving major buffs and regeneration.

It is also worth pointing out that there are no free to cast abilities in the Dawn's Wrath skill line. Another aspect the Templar had but that the Warden now does better... let's just rename it Templar 2.0?

Good catch, didn't even think of the betty netch when reading that change to the passive as I haven't yet familiarized myself with the Warden skills.

This is definitely a no-no and needs immediate attention. @ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_JessicaFolsom

No worries, I don't play Templar so definitely could have been wrong but glad I got that part right. This Warden passive just looks like it's crazy OP. Hope they get this fixed or at least add a cost to it, not sure what the justification for making it free is other than to give the Warden better sustain.

I don't give free items because it's a just game. Play the game.

It certainly seems that way. Zos has said it though multiple times, we just only now are noticing.

Straight from the Warden skills release: "If you create a Warden character, you will get access to a series of highly versatile skill lines that can help you heal, defend, and do damage."

      http://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/news/post/2017/04/13/warden-guide-skill-lines-and-abilities

And this is from the Patch 3.0.0 forum post: "If you like to take hits, deal damage, or heal, this class is for you."

Agreed. Make casting shards on the Templar generate ult or casting Igneous Shield on the DK. For Sorc and Nightblade I don't know what abilities it could be, but those two make sense to me for DK and Templar since they are class defining skills.

Seriously, this is skills is so completely broken it's ridiculous. What are you thinking Zos?

I'm curious about the concern around this power - is it the combination of utility or one of the effects in particular?

Is it about resource-free buffs? There are several Skills that provide passive benefits (like Major Savagery or Major Prophecy) just for slotting the ability. Repentance, as another example, refills resources free of cost and provides passive buffs.

Is it about non-combat Ult. regen? Nightblades have a passive in Catalyst that can generate 20 Ultimate out of combat by drinking potions.

Is it about the cumulative utility of passive Skills with other Skills? Argonian Nightblades generate all three resources *and* Ult. for popping a potion.

What, specifically, is broken? (and why is this not being discussed in the Closed Beta forum?) I think this discussion could have merit, provided more context is provided and located in the appropriate sub-forum. Currently, this reads like a negative rebuke of a new class ability under development and less like a concern for balance.

Can this thread be relocated to support further discussion?

I take it you don't pvp?

Generating Ultimate at-will only needing a GCD is really powerful (even using a potion has a drawback, especially in PvP).

Of course it shouldn't be out of combat but even if in combat, this would be a very strong ability.

The negative tone has to do with the total disbelief I had when I realized what the new patch meant but tried to back off it later as this really is a crazy powerful skill that needs to be addressed and not a hate on the warden post. Tha said, no other class gets ult on command out of combat, gets regen and a major sorcery / brutality buff all for free. That's crazy.

I can't test it because I'm a console player but would love input from folks on the PTS.

I also think if this were on the general forum people would be going bonkers with Warden hate, the class is already despised and hasn't even come out yet (personal observation from the people I play the game with). The timing of release of warden should not have been the same time as all the other classes being nerfed.

It's kind of hilarious they didn't think of that. They've created an actual face, someONE to direct the frustration and anger at, and it's their shiny new superwarden.

At-will MAJOR sorcery and magicka restore, for free, at the same time everybody else is getting nerfhammered right in the resources. Oh yeah, screw that guy.

Exactly, I despise the warden class and it's not even out but it comes across as the driving force for sustain and resource management being demolished. "Rolling a warden" has become a bit of a meme in my guild already. Funny and sad all at the same time.
