ESO needs a new system for patching their game without interrupting gameplay for their players. ArenaNet does a great job with GW2 and their players by always letting them play their game (except when an expansion hit, then you have some downtime as you have to download huge amount of data). So how does it work?
- The old server - back-up server.
- The new version of the server with updates/bug fixes etc etc.
When a new update hits the new version of the server, players can still play 1-2 hours on the old version of the server and choose to either update to the new version right away and play there or continue to play for an hour on the old until they are forced to patch. This leads to no interruption in gameplay and no downtimes except for the time you need to update to the new version, which usually takes maximum 1 minute (depending on your internet speed).
This is also a great way to test content without having a PTS.
Why is this not a standard in online games?
