Yes, the servers are spazzing out and its giving people problems with staying logged into certain characters or being able to log into them again.

Again, there's nothing wrong with AT&T's routers. You will stop getting reponses to ping commands after a certain router as means of protection and to not stress out the infrastructure.

    tracert.jpg

Notice how my tracert stops at the same point, yet after manging to get back onto my right character again, I had no problems staying on. If there was an issue with that last hop, I wouldn't even be able to connect, especially since the address I used is seemingly the one for the login server. I actually had problems last week with connectivity to the game because Cogent was having network issues, so I definitely know what its like when there's a network issue going on outside of ZOS's realm.

Obviously, the maint they had to fix the server problems only made things worse and ZOS really needs to step in here and say something.

So, you're saying that tracert doesn't actually trace a route to an address, and it is a useless application that just stops somewhere in the middle of it's job because doing it's job is too hard on the system it's being used to diagnose.

    OK.

If only there was some application that could be used to find a path from a starting node to an ending node, it could be used to determine the viability of that path, and it might be useful to discover weaknesses in the infrastructure.

This is the middle of the night in NA, and it sux out loud NOW.
PPL are going to be miffed, vexed and annoyed when they log into this carp during daylight hours with traffic and have this prob with a bigger population.

Ping times have always been crap for ESO. It's the only game I've played that routinely has pings in the triple digits. Having an issue somewhere else in the chain just pushes the rage button and ZOS automagically gets the blame, even when their usually crappy netcode is 'working'.

Looking at an outage map for AT&T, it appears they're having issues in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, so it's possible that's what's causing the unusually poor latency and disconnects.

exactly what mine says, everyone might be blaming ZOS when in reality its AT&T fault

If it isn't there fault. Why not make an announcement. Instead of just letting all your customers slag you off for day after day.

How do you explain the fact that right now, as we speak, I cannot log into my main who is parked in Rawlka. I've tried 5 times in a row and can't login. Before I got disconnected from Rawlka I had a ping of 999+. I get to rawlka loading screen and it keeps bouncing me to the main screen. I ran a traceroute and get stumped at the same ATT spot as you. However, when I use my Alt, who is parked in IC, I can log in just fine, my ping is normal, and I can pvp just fine.

Unless the IC/PvP servers are logically or physically located elsewhere in the country, ATT has nothing to do with it. And FYI computers and routers are smart. There is more than one way to route traffic to a destination. If one path is down the routers will find another way. Unless your telling me that ATT owns the entire pathway, core switches, or main router distribution channels to the ZOS servers. In which case ZOS as a customer should be screaming at its ATT service provider. So either way, ZOS isn't doing enough to fix the issue. But this is not the issue because different characters work in different zones. So its not a layer 1 - 3 issue. All indications point that they borked the patch/maintenance at a layer 7 level.

@Sounomi is 100% correct, and the problem is with people in this thread who don't understand how traceroute actually works.

Traceroute requires that a node responds to ICMP packets. Most things respond to ICMP, which is why ping and traceroute work most of the time. Some servers ignore ICMP and don't respond to them, which is why attempts to ping or traceroute them will result in the server appearing to be unavailable.

Since ICMP is used for purely diagnostic purposes, ignoring and dumping ICMP traffic doesn't affect the normal use and connectivity of a server--it just means that you can't use diagnostic tools that rely on ICMP, and it also means that DDoS attacks that use ICMP won't be an issue for that server (which is the reason some operators decide to cut out ICMP).

In any case, the ping rate reported by the game client is how long it takes the server to respond. One way the server can be slow to respond is if there is a bad connection between you and the server. Another way the server can be slow to respond is if the server is backlogged with things that it's processing. It's clear that this is what's happening and that it's a problem with their server's ability to process rather than their server's connectivity.

It's the same problem as last night (so the extra maintenance didn't fix it). And it's absolutely not a connection problem.

I have two characters on two accounts in Shornhelm. One is perfectly fine, the other has 999+ ping. Both using the same network connection. Rezone the high-ping one into the Outlaws Refuge, and all is well again.

Actually yes, it would have made a difference because the absence of any comment at all implies they don't think there's a problem.

It's not a matter of flame direction but of intensity.

Yes. The maintenance yesterday was for general performance issues and disconnects; today is specifically for the high ping, which we recently resolved internally (otherwise we certainly would have done it all at the same time yesterday).

They can make things working well ...but first they must break something. This is happening since launch.

And don't forget one thing..many personnel left ZOS ..many quality people ( remember Paul Sage, Nicholas Konkle? ) . They are trying to handle things with only a few people...so this is takes time and brain burning. Also there were many advises from the community to change the internet provider , to upgrade the band, to upgrade the servers ...but it seems ZOS doesnt listen..

I understand that every mmo must have patches ..honestly I can''t wait for them.

Usually a patch must fix things . If the patch fail...it needs a replacement with another patch to fix the things broken by the first patch...and so on...

What I cannot understand is why a very small patch like the one from Monday took 10 hours to implement ..and caused so many problems.
Almost every MMO company in the world needs max 2 hours of maintenance to implement a small patch.

Others even don' t need to take the servers down to implement patches. Look at Guild Wars 2.

ESO is a wonderful MMO ..and after One Tamriel has become a true MMO..but ZOS need more experienced MMO PERSONNEL ...people that know what are they doing ..and not making experiments on the customers.

Because ESO is a MMO in ES Franchise they ( ZOS) are not afraid in loosing customers because is an ES title.

An MMO in ES Universe is something huge that not every MMO Company could handle.

I'm sure ZOS could do it better if they will begin to listen to the Community

    1. Upgrade your internet and band connection and make it redundant I'm working in a multinational Energy company ..

I'm managing the network ..we must have optimal connection between us and our partners of all of the world ..to access our servers. That's why we have a redundant connection..we are spreading our packets using many and different nodes. We never had lag or ping issues..because almost every second lost cost money.. ..so ZOS do something with your internet and band connection!
    3. Upgrade your servers .

    3. Hire more experienced personnel ( in codding , tweaking , networking)

    4. After the first 3 points you can upgrade the game engine ..modding it with some Unreal Engine or Cry Engine things ( many MMOS already did this)

    5. I'm sure you can finish the UNfinished Justice System (also ..to have some open PVP areas would be nice )

    6. If you hire good quality people ....certainly you can implement spell crafting.

    7. ZOS ..u need more quality personnel ...more coders..programmers also...( Nobody understand how such a big company can't implement a transmogrify system in a MMO like ESO?

    8. I love ESO ...I love ES series ..but please ZOS u can do more than this ...upgrade your systems and try to become a really pro company!.

    Good luck!
