    that was fun....

got a couple of atro mounts, three pets, four costumes, a hat, a memento, several mount training scrolls and a load of junk that i traded back for gems.

do i feel like i've been burned? no

do i think i've been scammed? no

do i think i've been ripped off? no

    but how can that be???????

because i fully understood what i was getting into.

and the really fun bit is..... it didn't cost me a penny because zos keep giving me crowns that i have no real use for.

for less than 25p a day i get all the dlc, extra xp and a craft bag and a great game to play - i call that a really good deal.

I'm pretty sure you'd feel differently if you fell on the other side of the bell curve but hey, who are we to point out how objectively bad the system is?

why would i have felt bad????

    it didn't cost me anything.

You don't pay for a subscription?

    ok... once again.

i pay for eso+ it is less than 25p per day. the reason i pay for it is free dlc. i appreciate the extra xp and the craft bag but i do not sub FOR those things - they are not a factor in my continuing to sub. and, if you read the post that started this off, you would have seen that i wrote 'zos keep giving me crowns that i have not real use for' i.e. the crowns are a thing i neither want nor need so no i do not feel that i have paid for them in anyway shape or form. if zos stopped handing them to me it would make no difference i would still sub. is that clear?

or do you need me to explain it again?

If you want to lie to yourself and stick your fingers in your ears go right on ahead. No ones going to stop you. But if youve been subbed for any time longer than about 6 months, youve more than paid for the DLC. You paid for the Crown Crates and no amount of twisting of reality or the truth is going to change that. Is that clear?

a question to you.... when was the crown store introduced to the game?

    2015.... if i remember correctly.

when did the game go live?

    oh yes..... 2014

i subbed from the start.......the price is still the same.

    is that clear?

so no amount of your trying to twist the truth to your sanctimonious world view is going to work.

Had a dip with the crown crates. Bought 15 and got quite a few epic items. Got 2 storm mounts, the red wolf, the wizard hat, soul shriven armour and ragged clothes, evening dress and some battlemage armour (2 different sets). Got 3 or 4 riding speed and 2 stamina. Got a few duplicates which auto converted to gems (an outfit was 5). The rest were potions and experience scrolls. I was quite surprised how much stuff I actually got so was pleasantly surprised and feel I got value for money. However, there isn’t anything left that I really fancy so wont be gambling any more until next season.

However, For the life of me I cant work out how you convert the potions into gems. Anyone done it?

Also I saw a few people linking stuff from the crates I text chat. However, mine says they are bound so no idea why or how they can do this.

After you finished your gamble you should have the option to convert certain items into gems. I'm not sure whether you can accidentally skip that though.

So I was going to post exactly what I got, but I accidentally clicked through one crate, so can't say exactly. I opened 19 crates.

I got a whole lot of consumables, but also a helstrom lizard, a rosy netch, an orchid nixad, a black mane lion, and a storm atro camel. I also got enough duplicates to buy a pit wolf and a chub loon.

I feel dirty now BUT I did get what I wanted (the lion, the wolf, and the chub loon). And doing the maths - I spent 6,500 crowns. If we say that the lion, the atronach, and the wolf would have been worth 2,500 crown, and the pets (except the lizard) would have been worth 1,000, I actually did ok.

But I sort of hate myself.

    No, but maybe....
I've skimmed through a few studies over the last few days done over the last 10 years regarding MMOS and online gaming addiction... Some people lost jobs and some lost partners and more . Be careful .

I think we've read the same studies. I can only tell one firsthand account. When Everquest first came out I was working in a computer store and we all started playing. One fellow, I'll call him Rob, was a real health nut. He had a beautiful wife and baby girl, about 9 months old.

He lost everything, so fixated on EQ did he become. It was very sad. In the old days we called guys like him "catasses" because of the smell from not keeping your house clean (there is some MMORPG trivia for you younger players :) ). His wife left him because he was always playing EQ. The last time I saw him was about 7 years ago or so. He was working at BestBuy and looked like he weighed 400 pounds. And it wasn't muscle.

I am not sure if I can really blame an online game for that, anymore than I can blame ESO if someone maxes out their credit cards on Crown Crates. I do find them unethical, but am torn on that aspect of it. I think people like Rob are hard-wired wrong, for whatever reason. If it wasn't EQ, Crown Crates, it would be something else. Again, very sad. Tragic even. However we all are dealt a multitude of bad cards in this life and personal responsibility cannot ever be discounted. I used to drink Jim Beam. It made me a mean drunk that liked to fight. I put it down and walked away, even though I could still go for a drink even now at 5:30 in the morning.

If the Crown Crates are ruinous for a few people, I don't think I can lay that at Zeni's feet.

The problem with arguing with a jackass is that they never stop braying.

I believe it is every three months. I could be wrong, but if so I blame them for using the word "seasons".

    I have thousands of crowns.
But I won't risk it in online gambling.
It's even worse than a casino since ZOS don't publish the odds.
If you value your money, I suggest to not partake in this gambling activity.
There were lucky few who got what they wanted from the crates but they are the minority.

I hope that ZOS will realize that the crown crates feature is a colossal mistake and remove it.

You realise that there's different teams?

Bug fixers won't be stuffing crates.

Loremaster Lawrence won't be stuffing crates.

The world design people won't be stuffing crates.

Rich Lambert won't be stuffing crates

There's likely a team for Crown things. I don't understand how people think suddenly everyone at ZOS is working on these.

I checked the crown crates in PTS months ago and I decided the risk is much greater than the reward.

I don't know what drove ZOS to introduce the crown crates.
Maybe the lack of income or greed or both.

I bought 15k worth, only planned on spending 10...but...well it happens. I bought 10k crowns during the sale expecting to spend on crates, i bought another 5k yesterday after not getting an atro on the first 30 crates. Its my disposable income, instead of buying ff xv, i bought crowns...

Im pretty satisfied with the results. Got the atro wolf mount on one of my last crates. Also with all the gems form the useless stuff and doubles i was able to get the black mane lion and clouded senche that i missed. I still have 150 gems that i'll probably just hold until next time.

I got one atro mount, thats all i really wanted, i wont buy more crates this cycle. 15k crowns got me 3 mounts, and a few costumes i may or may not use...

I did since my crowns ... well ... they collect dust. I did not get anything worth the crowns though and a tiny amount of gems for the sold stuff (would have sold all, but you are forced to 'collect'). The crates are not worth opening or even buying if you ask me. Won't do it again.

I sub so had some extra crowns. I set a limit and only bought the one 15 crate pack and don't intend to buy anymore until the next season comes out and then will decide based on what is offered.

Picked up a bonus card and wolf atro mount on the 3rd crate. Interestingly the only one that I was curious about, but was willing to accept whatever I got.

Also pulled the red pit wolf (yay), a couple pets, costumes and cosmetics I'll never use and a whole lot of potions and scrolls that I converted to gems.

I believe they did drop the price a little for gem purchases (though not for Apex items), but in the end have 54 gems to spend in the future. There isn't anything in this season that I really want to spend them on so hope they carry over to the next.

At this rate, I'm hopeful that crates will be a 4 time a year diversion, with each new season spending my unused sub crowns and playing once. Between the pit wolf and atro wolf mounts, I'm satisfied with my crate experience.

Got the 15-pack out of curiosity.

It's pretty clear that each crate is set to have 3 consumables and 1-non consumable. I didn't get a single crate that violated that pattern. As a costume junkie, I'm happy with a couple of my wins (battlemage armor will be a perfect look for one of my girls, and I've wanted the evening dress for a while) and after selling back the potions I was able to buy another costume I liked.

I'd say the few things I got from it that I will use were worth about 3000 Crowns, not the 5000 spent on the crates... but that's close enough that I'm not too sore about the difference. And I'm glad I didn't have my heart set on a storm atronach mount, because if 5000 Crowns' worth of boxes netted me about 60 gems, I can't imagine how much I would have to spend to get 400 gems.

So. Overall, not a terrible experience, but not amazing either. I doubt I'll be buying them again, at least not until they change the deck to include some other costumes or pets I'm interested in.

Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."

I had 900 Crowns sitting in my account so I bought 2 crates. I got potions, a speed riding lesson, a battlemage outfit, and a couple soul gems. I traded everything I could for gems... of which I now have a whopping 5.

I knew what I was in for and I chose to do it anyway. I'll probably do it again in the future but - just like this time - only with excess Crowns that build up after purchases that, for me, to me, make sense.

I know that some people are compulsive, so ESO will be making money off of them.

I decided I would burn 1200 crowns on them to see what would happen. Had I purchased the items I won from the crown store I suppose you could argue that I came out ahead having received 2 outfits, a hair style, and a non-combat pet plus potions and lessons, but ultimately nothing I would have purchased on purpose.

I'm pretty much done with them.
