    that was fun....

got a couple of atro mounts, three pets, four costumes, a hat, a memento, several mount training scrolls and a load of junk that i traded back for gems.

do i feel like i've been burned? no

do i think i've been scammed? no

do i think i've been ripped off? no

    but how can that be???????

because i fully understood what i was getting into.

and the really fun bit is..... it didn't cost me a penny because zos keep giving me crowns that i have no real use for.

for less than 25p a day i get all the dlc, extra xp and a craft bag and a great game to play - i call that a really good deal.

I'm pretty sure you'd feel differently if you fell on the other side of the bell curve but hey, who are we to point out how objectively bad the system is?

Unless you were just picking crowns up off the ground it cost you something. If you were just using the ones that came with your ESO+, you'd have spent the crowns you got via that. Those have the associated cost of an ESO+ membership. That's not "for free", they are factored into the cost, even if you personally consider them valueless. Which clearly you don't, since you just used a bunch to gamble.

While I don't totally agree with the crown crates I bought four just to test.
I guess I did ok, got Storm Atronach Senche mount, Red Pit Wolf pet, Loone? pet, some mimic stones, poisons and a couple of hats for my 1600 crown investment.

Now I am done as I got the mount I would have bought for the same price.

and no..... from my point of view (the one that counts since it is me who is paying) the free crowns are not factored into my appreciation of the cost of eso+. as i said, i have no real use for them.

the reason for getting the crates was so that i could see the contents for myself and, at least, have something concrete to discuss - rather than depending on supposition and sanctimonious suspicion.

There will be other seasons of Crown Crates, and then you can use what you learn from this to make an informed decision when the next season comes :)
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

As someone who was burned by deals like this in previous games, I can safely say I won't be buying a single crate. Ever.

Oh I will be tempted, I will eventually want to buy, that's how these things are designed. But when that happens I'll take a week off the game. That's always enough to forget about it.

I don't like the crates but at the same time I do agree with this poster.

There were a few mounts I wanted from the store, I bought these a while back. Now I get my crowns with my sub and to be honest there's absolutely nothing I really want.

The crafting bag is worth the sub to me, hence I will keep on subbing. I just wasted 5000 crowns on leveling a horse on one of the new alts I started, it would only have taken me less than 2 months to do this without spending any, but as I have zero things I want to buy, I thought why not.

That being the case, if I have 10000 crowns sitting in my account doing nothing, if I decided to waste them on crates, it really is costing me nothing, the same as buying the speed leveling for my mount cost me nothing. If I was buying extra crowns for cash and then buying the crates, that is a different matter altogether, but I'm not.

All that said, I really really do not like the crates and I do know that they are relying on people with addictive personalities to spend more than they can afford.

I probably should have voted no, but maybe because there may be something in the future I want, but honestly those mounts are obnoxious and the clothing w/e is meh.

I waited to draw an opinion until I saw the way they implemented them, and other than exploiting gambling problems of people, its just more things that don't mean anything or add any value to my game, so if other people want them so be it.

Bought just over 10,000 Crowns worth, which I purchased when they were on sale (for this very purpose). Was surprisingly pleased with what I got - two of the Storm Antronach mounts, some costumes, pets, skins, mounts, riding lessons, experience scrolls, and the inevitable junk. Thought the whole thing was well implemented.

My only gripe is, I don't understand why the potions and food aren't the same degree of potency that I can craft. Seems daft.

When they refresh the crates, I'll definitely buy more. I don't see what all the negativity is about.

Looking forward to the little/big rewards. Since I have had a good run of bad luck in November. Was capped off on the 29th when I broke the pull cord to my snowblower and we have been hit with a foot of snow (30cm) in the last 36 hours.

The introduction of RNG boxes is a F2P-Transition strategy, so this is a real possibility.

Almost a certainty, along with the inevitable P2W elements leaking into them too that people keep worrying about.

ZOS have a terrible track record already when it comes to the slippery slope. Look at the history of ESO and it's two years of slowly giving ground and lowering the bar, one notch at a time. The facts are there and they speak for themselves. No reason to think that this will be any different.

I don't want to try (repeatedly) to buy that item which might or might not exist in a crate, for an indeterminate price.

    Nope, never.

I will never give Zenimax a single modicum of support for their scam-crates. They will never see a single Crown spent on any of their Clown Crates from my wife or I.

The scam-boxes are a wrip-off, and serve no other purpose than to wring as much cash out of the players as possible, without having to really develop... anything in return.

My wife and I actually spend quite a bit of money in the Crown Store. We buy Mounts, Motifs, and various other utility items. But when we do that, we pay a price for an item, and we get that exact item. No RNG involved to scam me out of my hard-earned money.

I would rather shave my [redacted] with a cheese grater than ever support these types of scam-boxes.

I'm perfectly willing to buy things from the crown store (in fact this month I'm going to be buying 2 new mounts, a new pet and at least 1 new costume) but only if I know what I'm getting and what it will cost me. I'm not going to pay out for a randon chance at something I may or may not want.

    Opened 4, got:
    2 Azure Brow-to-Temple Circlet
    1 Belly Dancer Veil
    1 Crown Crate Experience Scroll
    1 Crown Lethal Poison (25)
    1 Crown Mimic Stone
    1 Crown Spellcaster's Elixir (5)
    4 Crown Survivor's Elixir (5)
    1 Crown Tri-Restoration Potion (5)
    2 Crown Warrior's Elixir (5)
    1 Roostertail Frills
    1 Wrestler's Buzz Cut

The jewelry & haircut are good for alt appearances; I don't play Argonians, sadly. I kept the XP scroll and mimic stone, converted potions to gems (they aren't bad, especially Survivor's, but I make tons of potions already), and have 16 crown gems to save towards something nice.

Not a great haul, but acceptable, and I'll open more when I feel like a little reward, probably next week or two.

Certainly nothing as insulting as the 1 crown meal reward on PTS. OH, that burned.

Tbh, I don't care about them. They drop only rarely and regular XP pots + full Training gear are already very effective. Yes, they're better than what we can craft (mythic ambrosia is a joke), but they don't really make much difference, if any.
