Cant have free to play not expect things like crown crates because at the end of the day they are running a business.
The same could be said for any business. If I go clothes shopping I don't expect a mystery box, nor if I order from a restaurant, or buy a mobile phone. Why should we have them in gaming?
They have three regular sources of income at the moment - subscriptions (which provide financial security), crown store (which if given a decent and regular amount of stock would be a nice earner) and box sales. They're not on skid row here, they're just being greedy.
That is exactly nail on head, the only places this sort of thing happens is in casinos and in video games. I don't go to the grocery store and buy a gamble bag of food, I don't go to the clothes store and buy a gamble bag of clothes, I don't know why some people are OK with this. This is ESO, not Vegas.

It matters because if the crates do well and generate much revenue then the focus will move even more towards the sale of the crates and the exclusives in them rather than game content - and similar mischief.
Why spend so much time and effort and money making a complex and interesting game when you can just sell crates?
Or they could use the newly generated money to maybe hire additional folks for new content or fixing the existing. You don't know, I don't know. But it don't need to happen the way you think. *sigh*
It's also more then just one mount. Several of the cosmetics shown on pts for style parlor are also in the crates. Not every mmo has done rng crates. Until now it has only been full blown f2p mmorpg's.ScooberSteve wrote: »What does it matter no one is forcing you to buy them? Its 1 mount not the end of the world. And every mmo has something similar to crown crates. And your wrong your local grocery store does have a gambling machine its called a skill tester. It drops a toy how ever often the owner tells it to and in 1951 they were banned by federal law in America because they were deemed gambling devices. Its only later on the ban was lifted. Even in some states today its still banned unless the user can make repeated attempts and win a prize hence why skill tester today have the added claw fow winning lollies on the side.

Because you don't have to?
Looking forward to seeing people on the new mounts because that means they are generating revenue. I will throw some crowns at the crates to see what all the fuss is about, but I have the ability to control my impulses and will stop if I don't see the benefit to me personally.
On the other hand, if they stop producing good content on a regular basis (which they haven't yet) or stop producing items to be purchased directly from the crown store that are worthwhile (which they haven't yet) then I will be concerned.
Good luck to everyone trying them and to anyone not... for financial or any other reason... best wishes, try and relax. You aren't going to stop it from happening, It is a done deal. Bashing or shaming people for buying crates isn't going to get you anywhere and neither is clenched fist raging at your monitor while slamming your forehead on the keyboard trying to convince people to abstain.
It's only a game... one I have also played non-stop since open Beta and plan to continue to play until I decide otherwise.
Peace.

Agreed. Just wanted to point out though that not everybody is after a mount lol. I've always found glowy and "edgy" looking mounts and armours to be a little obnoxious

I just thought the atronach mounts they had on the PTS were awful, I would genuinely prefer it if no-one had that - what is wrong with more normal horse colors or something? I prefer realism/fantasy-lite over flashy fantasy stuff any time.
Well yeah - I hope I am wrong, I really HOPE that they have done something good here.
I do know that on the PTS I spent a fictional $500 and only got 1 mount. They took our feedback onboard, and said they would up the drop-rate by "a bit".
Sorry if I am not rushing out all excited about this. Maybe I will be proven wrong. But I am not going to be testing it on live.
Whether or not they contain cosmetic junk that you don't need isn't the point, the point is that if they're focusing their resources on this, they've got less resources to focus on content.ScooberSteve wrote: »Yeah because 5000 crowns for a mount is super cheap. How many mmo with decent player base are scamming money off players like these disgusting crown crates name ONE?ScooberSteve wrote: »What does it matter no one is forcing you to buy them? I think it is time again to mention that the interface for opening the crates is more polished than any other aspect of the game.
Literally any other aspect of the game.
It is beautifully put together and animated.
I wonder how different things could be if the same amount of resources that were put on that had been put on, say, coding a proper search function for guild stores.
I'm sorry if I find it unlikely that the resources generated will go to the development of the game after seeing how polished the interface for opening the crates was.

Actually it isn't, it doesn't have (or at least when I tested it on the PTS didn't have) any subtitles at all for the hard of hearing, so from my point of view it looks sloppy right now compared to the rest of the game, and disconnected from it. Mind you, it did take Zeni over a year to make proper subtitles a thing, in the game.

Problem is, it will take a while for us to be sure that the money is being put back in the game. A few months of good showcases and a couple of good DLCs do not really show anything.Whether or not they contain cosmetic junk that you don't need isn't the point, the point is that if they're focusing their resources on this, they've got less resources to focus on content.ScooberSteve wrote: »Yeah because 5000 crowns for a mount is super cheap. I didn't take subtitles into consideration. I was thinking of how fluid and well made the animations were, and how responsive the controls were too.
On a sorta-related note, I wish someone would make an addon that could remove the Crown Crate button from the UI. I kept clicking on it instead of in the Crown Store button right next to it, on the PTS, and after a while I wanted to yell at Pacrooti to shut up.
All of you "PAWS" people do realize rip-off is not spelled with a w, right?
