Im a male player so the following may be a bit weird for some?

I started last week with a male Templar, an old guy with a grey beard. In my head he was a retired farmer, family all grown up so sold the farm and headed off on his own adventure. I wanted him to look like a farmer as opposed the many neon glowing spiky armours that I see (literally) running around so the clothing/armour available doesn’t really look suitable. Settled on a pirate outfit.

So I had the bright idea of dumping his appearance and going full on gender swap to a young woman. Clearly I made her as attractive as possible to look at but what I wasn’t prepared for is the amount of other pervs (in addition to me) that are in the game. The same character, now a young woman in a belly dancer outfit is getting numerous ‘trade’ offers, both in game and PSN. I can stand in a town and player literally walk up stand in front and stare. The sexy walk they have the females do, doesn’t help matters. Its kinda amusing knowing that im a bloke behind the toon but I feel sorry for all the female players that maybe get this all this time. (unless of course they play as male characters!)

Any other female characters (male or female RL players) get this ‘problem’

Not really, I run around in armored sets tho. All my characters are traps anyhow. =D

All female chars, and nothings happened to any of them asides from the odd little dude being stunned by female presence on the interwebs. That being said- I don't go for generically 'pretty' characters. I like them to be pretty sure, but I also like them to look in place in the world, and depending on their character, even a little arrogant or battle-worn.

well there are some weird people out there. a while back i was watching a youtube video (i think it was twitch fails, or something like that) and was laughing my ass off at the guy who payed $20 to watch a female streamer do jumping jacks.

Your 'problem' is, you believe they are attracted to YOU, and not your avatar. Since when is it a crime to be attracted to cartoon characters? However, I more suspect you had expectations, and now your mind is making them come true.

I would also like to point out the assumptions in this statement. You assume female players can't handle and don't want the attention? You really feel sorry for them? First world problems, huh? Do you believe women need your pity?

Still, I don't play a female avatar, because there is a certain awkwardness knowing that others perceive me as a female, but that's just me. If I was playing as a female, and someone payed me a compliment. it would go something like this...

Someone else: "Dude, your avatar is hot."
    Me: "ikr"

See, I am still as much a third person in the compliment as everyone else, and I would never take the compliments personally.

wowza.....what a response to a simple question/observation based on FACT I have experienced playing two genders in game in a short space of time.

I can assure you as a 40 something happily married family man I have no 'problem' with thinking people fancy me and not my avatar...

Re the second statement....note the word 'maybe' in there. 'Maybe' defines a random and unknown quantity and not a direct assumption of fact. So no...I don't believe women (I note your generalisation in there) need pity but was purely asking if other players of female characters get additional attention/harassment (irrespective of whether taken in good spirit or not, as mine is)

Thanks to the other posters.... good to hear im not totally alone in noticing this. One extra thing ive noticed, the attention generally comes from newer players and not the high level players that have 'maybe' (added for bryans sake) have seen pretty much everything already

Your use of the word maybe was not used to describe if they 'maybe' uncomfortable, it was used to describe if they 'maybe' get the attention in the first place, which still implies that once they do get the attention, you pity them... but nice try at defending your assumptions. My point was... 'Maybe' they want the attention and don't need your pity, and 'maybe' these delusions that other avatars are 'harassing' you are just in your head to begin with.

Maybe... You worded it incorrectly... or maybe you just like to generalize. I only pointed out the flaw that no one else seems to notice.

I only perceived what you wrote based on the definitions of the words you chose and the order you chose to use them in. If you expected different reactions, then you should have chosen different words. Or did you expect every opinion to simply reinforce your assumptions? I really don't know... I only suspect, like any rational mind would.

In my opinion, you are setting a standard PC outrage idea that it is wrong for players to be attracted to cartoon characters, or to admire other players characters appearance. You do this by accusing them of what you 'perceive' as harassment, and then imply that all female players feel harassed like you. However, 'maybe' I am wrong, but the words you chose point in that direction.

And if your depiction is true, you could always make your character ugly... If the 'harassment' is too much for you to handle.

I think part of the reason its happening to me is that I like to RP a little. Not in a major sense but when im in a town I like to trot around on my camel and walk into craft zones etc, rather than sprint/jump everywhere. Sometimes I just stand and watch what's going on in a town square and that's when it happens. Not when im running around.

You ended your OP with the word 'problem' in subtle quotes as to imply you felt some type of questionable behavior. This was very clear. So what was the problem then? That female avatars get attention? That's not a problem. You also said you feel sorry for girls who get this type of attention. Why? Or, maybe feel sorry for them, and maybe you don't? Do they need you to feel sorry for them? Or maybe they get the attention, and then you feel sorry for them?

Maybe you are trying to rewrite your OP because you know the original intent, and yea... you don't appreciate me pointing it out... but then maybe you should not have made so many assumptions to begin with. How about YOU give it a rest, because I can keep going. Accept that your OP had some logic errors, and that people on the internet are capable and will point them out if you don't word your sentences more carefully.

I personally want to see MORE hot avatars, and MORE dudes hitting on them. It's funny.

I'm female and play females (PS4) but my PSN gives me away; definitely female. I turned voice chat off pretty soon after starting to play because of some swearing/name calling incidents, which I feel limits my experience but worth it in the long run.
And I get the trade thing a lot too but this is my first MMO so I put that down to being normal!

This is old as the genre. I remember both males and females making tarted up female characters in EQ and DAoC and hanging out in newbie areas just to get free stuff back in the day. It's gotten a lot better over the years, though. I don't think most people even care any more.

Very normal. It is actually a lot better then it was in the past.

Heck when WoW came out all those years ago you could make money dancing on mail boxes. People would randomly send my female toons phat lewts in the mail.

Over time though more females are playing games and more males are smart enough to figure out ingame sex doesnt equal real life sex. But us guys is dum.

Almost makes me wish ESO had mail boxes to dance on.

    Maybe...

thank you for correcting my assumptions..... im glad you were in my head as I clearly didn't know what I was talking about. /applause

Jeez.. give it a rest please. Its a simple question to the wider audience. No intentions or accusations were implied or intended. I didn't expect or appreciate simple queries being dissected in such a manner about where I had put the word 'maybe' in a sentence. If people don't feel harassed, then great. I don't, as I clearly said. It was merely an observation I had found in game in my own experience which clearly you haven't had.

It's funny.

Someone else I know plays girls but has a male sounding PSN and has never had any problems. Could just be my characters are hotter than his but makes you think!

Almost makes me wish ESO had mail boxes to dance on.

now that's in idea for making a few extra gold.... haha. Gonna try that tonight in Daggerfall and wayrest. Hope I get something or it will be quite embarrassing after having solicited myself!

When I saw this thread I was really curious to read people's experiences.

I have a lot of Alts and some of them are female though most are male. The female I have played the most is an Argonian witch alchemist Alt so figures I would not get hit on with her.

I wanted to have one character of every race and realised I didn't have a Redguard yet. I decided to make a woman to be a healer character. I thought she will be both a woman and person of colour and unashamedly own it. My concern revolved around not wanting to represent the gender or race in any way that is perceived as derogatory or otherwise causing offence.

I will admit, given I had a lot of characters already by this point I decided to try and make the Wailing Prison tutorial more interesting (didn't want to skip it). I ditched all her soul shriven clothes and decided she would dress as she found bits of armour / clothing around Coldharbour. There was no pervy side in this for me being a gaymer. I mean she wasn't in her underwear that long, I found stuff...I did think it might draw some attention from other players but wasn't too concerned as I was having fun. I think I got a request to group but didn't accept because I was dropping out after training her up a little in Coldharbour and collecting a full set of clothes. I left her in the Wailing Prison until my crafter alt had researched all the required traits to craft her a full set of Redguard training gear.

For me, playing the female Alts can have a bit of feel of playing with and dressing up dolls. I want to make them pretty and find a good outfit and accessories but don't have the attraction based on their appearance. I have too many alts to have a lot of time to spend playing them all. At some point I will need to train them up so it would be good to know what to expect.

Finding a female alt is being played by a man might be off-putting to some and the type of people unsettled by that may find it worse still if they find I am a gaymer too. Oh well, if it gets bad I shall invoke the words of RuPaul and just sashay away.

My first and most experience character is a total bear stereotype. Big beard, stocky, belly and then I kicked it up a notch and he has a bear mount and bear cub pet. Too subtle? I could use the dye rack to dye all his gear the colours of the bear flag. Too much? He has a band or Maria and is single and ready to mingle! Why doesn't anyone hit on him? He will never find a husbear! *sobbing*

5 of my 6 characters are all female. But the only one this has happened to is my main, a bosmer nb. Actually just the other day. I was just standing there in Vulkhel Guard talking to my guild over the txt chat (ps4 na), and all of a sudden these two guys come up on mounts and just stare at me. I moved away, they bloody followed me. I mounted up and to my surprise they literally chased me across auridon! I finally got fed up with it and reported them. No more problems since then lol.

I have to chime in with a contrary experience-

I've played all females (as a female) for over 2 years, and only very, very rarely got even a hint of flirt from other players. No random strangers asked to group with me, or trade with me- maybe two "you're cute" whispers, in all that time.

Recently, I decided to make a male character. Since I see so many over-the-top and unrealistic females, I decided to make a ridiculous man. He's a super tall Altmer with big, ripply muscles and is just a little older, with gray beard and Adam-Ant eye stripe. I dressed him in a Primal jerkin so everyone could see his buff majesty... He looks a little like he may be going to a leather bar.

I was so surprised when suddenly I found myself constantly invited to group with people on random quests. People started chatting me up if I was waiting for a world boss or just standing somewhere around town. I got friend requests out of nowhere, pretty frequently.

I notice that not a lot of male avatars are hyper-sexualized. My guy really stands out in a crowd. So it may not just be that players automatically prey on women but not men- it may be that male characters aren't putting themselves out there to be properly objectified. ;p

I've just started posting in these forums and some of this is just too funny. I know games can be immersive but people detaching themselves from reality that much tells us so much about the human psyche. And it's effing scary. I think I'll just stay indoors and ogle cartoon jubblies

I am not sure if I can win with female Alts.

If I just try and roll play being my character:

Probably like one of the many: "I'm a lady!" sketches from little Britain. *Falceto* "I'm a lady...I like to do lady things". If complimented on looks: *imitation feminine laughter* "Sir...you embarras me!"

If I am honest when asked:

Tried to find video of scene from Stardust where Primus asks the 'innkeeper's daughter' "What's your name?" *gruff male voice* "Bernard"

I have sexualised my male characters and Rexorigus is as buff as I could make him. I don't have the right style motifs learned yet for revealing male armour. He could have an "accident" and slip while refilling oil on an oil flinging trebuchet.

Also who could resist the Bear?..apparently everyone...

Somehow it tells me you made her with exact purpose to get those stares and whispers, same like this thread.
