I got a question about racials and for once its not about balance...

Why aren't they just there and not cost skill points? A race is just that race you don't need skill to take advantage of your race! What I mean is say its treated like the Emperor Skill line they are automatic and don't cost points wouldn't that be better? Your thoughts?

It's part of the progression system.

I imagine it's so you get to make meaningful choices about where to spend your skill points while leveling.

As for the emperor skill line, it doesn't cost points because the passives no longer have any effect while you are not emperor. (previously it did and used to cost skill points)

@Smileybones Its a progression system that only applies to this game in Elder Scrolls I understand its different but hear me out. In the other games they were just created with the racial benefits you didn't earn them.

@IcyDeadPeople I realize that but its not like an Argonian can be born without gills unless they learn it. I also can't think of one player who wouldn't take racials.

I get your point. Is an argonian more argonian at level 50 than at level 1? Not at all.

You can take it for example; Nords are nice, big and burly. But you are born into this world as a wee-little milk drinking baby. However, as you age and adventure, you not only learn, but your ties to your bloodline help you develop into a real bearded manly nord man. For that you need to train. Or you might end up looking like those cute little bosmer. Being a Nord dosent automatically make you big and strong or a non-milk drinker. Those are earned. Being Nord just helps ;)

    Or another way you could see it;
the soul of your character was stolen & with that they've also lost a part of themselves.
So,considering the story of Eso it actually makes some sense that an argonian is more argonian at max lvl. When they've gathered skyshards.

Perhaps the effect of getting your soul back is a bit underwhelming at the moment & that should have unlocked new potential for each respected race?
If that would "make the vestige whole again" and thus unlock new racial progression options, that would have been pretty cool, imo

Physicality, which is defined by genetics, doesn't change - soul-shriven or not. That's how I view it.

If you go for this explanation, then taking the soul (personality) away would only make sense, if it results in the complete absence of any racial property until it is returned to the character. But that would obviously be unacceptable to many.
You reveal yourself best in how you play.

    Kelces - Argonian Templar
Farel Donvu - Dark Elf Sorcerer
Navam Llervu - Dark Elf Dragonknight
    Aniseth - Wood Elf Warden
    Therediel - Wood Elf Templar
    Nilonwy - Wood Elf Nightblade
    Jurupari - Argonian Warden
    Kú-Chulainn - Argonian Sorcerer
    PC - EU

Since they say the vestige is an empty husk longing to be filled that makes sense though.
Maybe reconnecting with the soul could mean different things for each race.Like an argonian would hear the hist again once getting the soul back
Racial passives currently in the game could be seen as the physical benefits/properties of the race(like argonians are physically well equiped to be great swimmers & poison resistant,no need for a soul for that)
But this would also mean that the racials as they currently are implemented in the game, would only be a fraction of the racials & that would mean that the other qualities that serve to customize the race,
would be unlocked once you have your soul back.
