What do you like best about tanking in ESO?
How creative and interesting role of tank can be. Tanks in eso are not simple brainless "taunt and hold block" like many people think. I like in ESO that tanks can do more than that, example crowd control, grouping monsters for easier kill, beside taunt they can position monsters so they are less threat to group and if nessesary they can resurrect people from places where noone else could;
What do you like least about tanking in ESO?
unfair anti-tank mechanics: monsters that ignore taunt, monsters that deal "arbitraily high damage" to people with health above X (for example above 30k HP), 1-shot-kills no matter how much HP you have (damage scaled to users HP);
anti-tank designs - with removed stamina regeneration while tanking, one of the basic stamina return sources are charged heavy attacks, unfortunately there are plenty of bosses which attack so fast its simply not possible to throw a charged heavy attack without sacrificing 20k HP because of being hit directly by enemy;
caps at most basic tanking stats like armor mitigation coming from physical resistance, spell mitigation coming from spell resistance (capped lowly at 50%) while at the same time there are no "caps" at things that kill like armor penetration, spell penetration, criticals and general DPS power creep; means to kill are being constantly improved while means to defend are still restricted by caps from ancient ages;
heavy armor being lackluster when compared to medium and light armor, heavy armor focus CP passive is giving exactly same amount of physical resistance as light armor focus (where heavy armor should provide more bonuses to resistances);
the fact that there are people who think "no player should be so tanky that he cant be killed" which in my opinion is wrong way of thinking, i say yes, players should be allowed to be so tanky its extremely difficult to kill them BUT at the same time those players cant kill anyone because they sacrificed everything by defence. In ESO its not possible because every time someone gets close to that or achieves it, tanking skills and stats are being nerfed with idea that "tanks should die too"
the fact that tanks are being tempted/forced to become DPS either by making new items (like Maelstorm shield or sword) give bonuses to DPS (or lack of any special tanking bonuses) or old unique items that benefited tanks (like Master Sword from VDSA that is only VR14 now) or by means of mechanics that bypass tanks or content that is impossible to do as tanks (Maelstorm Arena or achievements in new trials that are avaliable only to DPS);
What is your favorite encounter to tank?
Valkyn Skoria vCOA - its really fun boss to tank because it requires to be mobile, be aware of enviroment and what is going on but at the same time its fair for tanks, it can be taunted and dont use 1-shot-kill mechanics;
What is your least favorite encounter to tank?
Planar Inhibitor in White Gold Tower - ignores basic tool of taunt "Taunt" skill and whole encounter forces non-DPS roles to be DPS when they are choosen to have Moth Vision and are required to close portals;
Of the tools you have for tanking, which is your favorite?
Beside obvious two Taunt skills, the most favourite is Absorb Magicka because i like how it turns someone strenght against him (attacking tank with that skill instead of killing him makes him stronger); this is kind of skill i want to see more of because my dream tank build would be a "Rage"/"Berserker" kind of tank where the more people attack him the stronger he becomes (gains resources, heals from hits and enemy attacks) and the way he attacks is by turning enemy damage against him and if enemies simply dont decide to leave tank alone they will simply die because of being stubborn (like hedgehog or porcupine type of tank - animal that wont attack anyone BUT if someone will attack it, the more persistent he will be, the more he will be hurt or Armadillo kind of tank that is so tanky when he "rolls into ball" that noone can hurt it but at the same time all Armadillo can do is to wait or "roll away" - he cant attack back)
Of the tools you have for tanking, which would you like to see improved the most?
Immovable brute - extremly costly ability with extremely short effect
I'm happy they are looking at tanks. It should not be a surprise that a lot of the daily dungeon runs and what not are dying simply do to the lack of available tanks. Not only that, but I'm seeing fewer and fewer up and coming tanks. It's unappealing because the difference between a good tank and a bad tank can = the difference between failure and success vice the other two roles which can easily be carried by 3 other competent players.
1. What do you like best about tanking in ESO? -Being the brawler type. My tanks are never the hardcore meatshield tanks, nor do thy intend to be. My goal is, and always will be to fight my way out with my team. While the previous patches have made this vastly more difficult - it is still possible albeit getting to a worrisome state.
2. What do you like least about tanking in ESO? -Insignificant damage output. The best tanks out there that aren't magicka ward tanks can MAYBE do 6-7k single target at the expense of a lot of survivability and blocking. This wouldn't be bad if typical end game DPS numbers weren't breaching 20k, and in some cases 30k with extreme cases making 40k. The tank should be a solo juggernaut, capable of going toe-to-toe with most of the hardest trash mobs like the Xivkyn Bulwarks - not block in shear fear of their damage. A tanks weakness should be the lack of AOE damage which causes them to get swarmed and unable to cope via lack of resources.
3. What is your favorite encounter to tank? -All of vICP. Super stressful on a tank and damage being thrown around all over the place. Good/not-so-good players of ANY role can make or break this dungeon and it is the best designed place yet.
4. What is your least favorite encounter to tank? -Inhibitor. No tank required. In fact, self DPS and heals have reached such high numbers that this question could easily be replaced with "where is a tank required?".
5. Of the tools you have for tanking, which is your favorite? -Templar: Blazing shield. As a Templar tank, this is my go to and it is a tremendous skill that could use a bit of love. DK: Can't beat standard IMO - such a fight turning ultimate. Nightblade: Leeching strikes is PHENOMENAL and I am super happy of the buff it's providing us non sap-tanks. Sorc tank: The familiar nerf hit a bit hard, the inabaility to explode that little dude for big damage and a nice stun made me kind of sad. Also, Curse morph Daedric Prey does not affect the familiars activated ability.
6. Of the tools you have for tanking, which would you like to see improved the most -HA needs big love. In the end-game, HA loses so much resource regeneration that it is flat out unable to compete with the other armors in any aspect. Whereas Eric Wrobel is correct in saying that it gives the best "flat buffs" the passives are so mechanically inefficient to both LA and MA that anything in HA in unviable. A simple buff ala the nord passive and some semblance of damage boosting would go a LONG way for tanks and HA users in general. I'd like to imagine HA as early 2000's Mike Tyson. Super scary for the first few rounds, but if you made it to the later rounds, then he would gas out and wilt. Same idea for HA. it should have phenomenal damage and resistance but falter in extended fights. It already does the latter.

I can usually find a group immediately cause there are so few tanks.1. What do you like best about tanking in ESO?
It's short-sighted and focusses too much on stamina management now. What I mean is that the ability to perform feats was diminished greatly with the no-stam-while-blocking patch to a point where you need to spec heavily into stamina leaving very little resources for CC or buffing skills.2. What do you like least about tanking in ESO?
The manticora, it's just physically huge so I get the feels like I'm powerful3. What is your favorite encounter to tank?
Basically everything except trials bosses lol. As I said before, tanking is no longer fun because of the heavy focus on stamina management. I much prefer to be chaining, CCing, buffing and performing feats more often than simply standing, blocking, drinking stam potion, grabbing shard, etc. making sure I don't run OOS. I just do it because it's sooo easy to find groups cause very few still enjoy tanking.4. What is your least favorite encounter to tank?
No weapon/armor skill stick out. What I enjoy most is my DK skills like chains, talons, magma armor, GDB.5. Of the tools you have for tanking, which is your favorite?
I like you to improve resource management and remove the dependency of the tank on Templar shards or repentance. What I would recommend is making it easier to hit the mitigation caps by increasing the bonuses for mundus stones, cps, sets, etc. so as to not require a tank to spec so much into mitigation. This would free up resources to spec into regen, higher max resource pools without the need to revert changes to the no-regen-while-blocking mechanic.6. I'm surprised you're surprised.amgame308_ESO wrote: »And the no stam regen while blocking is fine. I'm surprised to see there are still complaints about this.

Calling all Tanks!
The Dungeon and Gameplay teams would love to get some feedback from all of you damage sponge, block mastering, mitigation kings out there. This thread is going to mainly cover PvE encounters specifically in group dungeons or Trials. If you like to play a tank in ESO and want to have your voice heard, or you don't and want us to know why, please answer the following questions. Please make sure you mention if you primarily play on console or PC.
1. What do you like best about tanking in ESO? The best part of tanking in ESO is development of the finer points such as choosing your taunt targets wisely, group CC manipulation, and positioning. I also love the moment when everyone else dies and I can pull all of the tricks out of my bag and get everyone back up to save a wipe. It makes you feel alike a bad ass when you can pull it off. Lastly, is the appreciation by your guildmates when they go off and try to do something without a tank and come to you, humbled, and request assistance. Now, most dungeons can be completed tankless, but the ones that need one make you feel like a necessary component.
2. What do you like least about tanking in ESO? Some of the newer instances in which you are required to provide a substantial amount of DPS. Look, here is the deal, when you took away stam regen when blocking, you forced many of us to completely flop our builds, moving from high magicka pool and high stam regen, to high stam pool and high magicka regen. (DK). Now that I have to spec champion points heavily into magicka regen, I loose the ability to deliver a decent amount of damage with stamina without quickly running out and being unable to block and taunt, as well, my magicka pool is small, so little damage is available there using magicka. Taking massive damage and keeping agro is intense in many situations for me, and I am a tank that has a ton of experience and a ton of champion points. Add doing large amounts of damage to the fight, and its just ridiculous. I like a challenge, but that goes outside the role. If that concept irritates the crap out of me, imagine what that is like to a new tank or someone with less experience. Allow me to concentrate on building a tank that takes a ton of damage and can use CC, taunt, and ally shielding to keep my guys alive instead of sinking skill points into a hundred different skill lines and having to build multiple full armor sets to change into mid-dungeon. Leave the DPS to DDs. Ultimately what happens is that no one wants to even start a tank because of all of the things listed above, so even though I have 5 max level characters, I find myself tanking for the guild 95 percent of the time. It burns you out. Make tanks necessary and great at tanking.
3. What is your favorite encounter to tank? The gold keys for both Crypt of Hearts and Banished Cells are a fun tank. You have to keep multiple enemies up that hit pretty hard in a group and test your resource management. Without the key requirements, you don't need a tank. The entire Vet City of Ash is pretty fun.
4. What is your least favorite encounter to tank? By far, the last boss of Imperial City Prison. As a tank, it is a joke. You do zero tanking. He shoots whomever he wants, so as a tank all you do is apply the occasional debuff (which anyone could do) then run around casting rapid maneuvers like a chicken with your head cut off.
5. Of the tools you have for tanking, which is your favorite? Talons, Talons, and Talons. Mess with Talons and I will delete my tank.
6. Of the tools you have for tanking, which would you like to see improved the most? Classes other than DK need CC like talons to help control groups. I am guaranteed to catch a wrecking blow to the face at least twice per dungeon when I run my DPS with a Templar or Nightblade tank. Having the ability to group CC for a few seconds while I pick out my taunts is the best part of tanking. This actually makes a tank feel more powerful than having big shields and high mitigation.
Look, all in all, I love my tank and love tanking. Keep the limits of responsibility to tanking. Not DPS, not healing, just Tanking. Make tanks necessary and give them powerful abilities to crowd control. Give someone thinking about tanking a good incentive to build it, and stay with it. It is nice to feel wanted, but I want some time with my other characters as well.
Thanks a lot for your feedback. We look forward to hearing what you have to say!
