Don't need this. You won't be carrying on conversations via text chat. Text chat is going to be used for short, heavily abbreviated, sentences that will reach far more people through zone, alliance, or possibly even global text chat "channels".
For example on a group finder channel you might read, " LFG, vet darkshade, v16 DK tank".
Or, in Cyrodiil zone chat you might read, "20 EP attacking Bleakers".
Or in a trade chat you might read, "WTS Dreugh Wax 5k".
Or in a guild text chat you might read, "hide and seak tonight in Daggerfall, 8pm est, use member channel 2".
Voice chat will still be ideal for cordinating with your group in a dungeon and i expect a mic will be required by most people that group up, like it is today. Text chat really shines at connecting you to the masses. If it is implemented correctly it will greatly improve the social aspect of the game. Those that want to isolate themselves or their group can turn it off but i promise you that doing so will hurt your experience. Remember this is a MMO, it's not supposed to feel empty and void of life.
Of course a keyboard will make typing these short sentences easier but it had too long been a misconception that a keyboard is required for text chat.
not true text chat will be heavily used for role-playersand if you want to type it out with the on screen one that's on you but it is much more efficient. that and the xbox one can also plug in with the headset
so there's that best of both worlds

I can see where roleplayers would want text chat for ERP. It seems to me tho that other forms roleplay would benefit from fast and fluid communication more than they would from anonymity. But then again, im no roleplayer.

its hard to role play via voice chat because some people just aren't talented enough for the role via voice. say they want a certain accent like khajiit but they suck at it. now they can no longer pull it off where as via type everyone cn read it via a certain accent and such making it much more viable for the roll players. that's just my experience thus far

This is the shortest post you've even written.

•Enable text chat on consoles later this year to help players – if they wish – to communicate zone-wide with other players, have easier access to emotes, and be able to chat with others using text instead of voice.
Why it needs to be zone-chat. I love to play on consoles without zone chat. Guild, group and raid definitely needs chat, at least its optional.
we can toggle it off.I already know it is going to be filled with racism, politics and other toxic nonsense a lot of the time as with any MMO I have played on PC. As soon as I see it I will be turning it off I dont play this game for it and I won't be feeding the trolls and squeakers hiding behind a keyboard looking for attention.

Will it replace the nasty, vile racist nonsense via voice chat? I'm all for it
