Should Tamriel have BACON?

Ham is a completely different cut of meat to bacon, it's cured in a completely different ay, it's prepared in a different way, it's cooked in a different way and it's even eaten in a different way, ham is not bacon.

Not everyones from the US bacon is from the back and belly ham is from most of the pig

I love Bacon really. But not that rubbish Americans call bacon!

I'm curious as to the difference. As an American, I love thin sliced crispy bacon served still hot after parking briefly on paper towels to get the worst of the grease off (because frying bacon SHOULD render a pan of grease).

I've seen thicker sliced bacon, but its not crispy enough

Standard American bacon is cut from the belly, English bacon and most EU bacon is from the back, it's a very different flavour, American has a lot more fat in it and thus a more fatty taste so doesn't need to be smoked and cured whereas most English bacon will be either smoked or cured to give it flavour. In the UK we do also have a similar bacon to the American type which we call streaky bacon.

Canadian bacon on the left, American bacon/Streaky Bacon top right and English/Danish bacon bottom right.

Normal english bacon is from the sides of the belly as english bacon has both belly and back in the slice back bacon is called rashes. Rashes are not the norm

Ham isn't bacon - and we don't have ham in the game. You probably meant to say pork?

Ham is bacon look it up not everyones from the US ham is uncooked bacon

    Incorrect.

Bacon and ham are completely different cuts of meat, Ham always comes from the thigh or rump whereas bacon comes from everywhere but the thigh or the rump. Ham is either uncured or cured using sugar or honey, Bacon is cured using salt, brine or smoke. Ham can be eaten cooked but is almost always eaten uncooked, whereas Bacon should always be cooked. Also Bacon comes almost exclusively from a pig (yes there are some specialty products that call themselves bacon such as beef bacon and turkey bacon, but they're not really bacon) but the term Ham can be used for any meat cut from the thigh or buttocks of an animal ;)

Ham is a very broad term that could include all sorts of things. Just look at the European ham culture:
    • Prosciutto Cotto: what Americans usually call ham, which is cooked & cured pork thigh
    • Prosciutto Crudo: usually dried and sometimes smoked pork thigh (which is the only real ham, in my mind). In Spain this is called "Jamon". Try "Pata Negra" next time you are in a really good food store, preferably ripened for 18 month at least. In Germany, the smoked variant is more common, but the Italians and Spanish know that the best produce is just dried and very lightly salted, then left to ripen for 12+ months.
    • Bresaola: which is dried beef sirloin. In Spain, this is known as "Lomo" and is made from pork sirloin.
    • Buendner Fleisch (buendner meat): A swiss speciality, where the dried ham meat is further developed underground (sometimes burried), lending a softness to it that is incomparable and a very special taste
    • Pancetta: What comes closest to the "bacon" concept. Its made from the fatty parts of the pork's belly meat, and cured.
    • Danish Bacon: Already described above, not belly but back, still the very fatty parts.
The list could probably be extended, but it would be too much for some.

Good thing we have American ham.

No, the standard bacon we have in the UK is from the back, English streaky bacon is from the belly. All bacons slices are rashers, the definition of rasher is "a thin slice of bacon". I've butchered far more pigs than I can count ever the years lol

Tbh, bacon should always be Danish, just as lamb should always come from New Zealand.

But then I grew up with those two being the standards. Things change but those two will always be tied in my mind hehe :)

And nether am I, and it's the same everywhere in the world.

Ham is not from all over the pig, it is only from the thigh and buttocks, ham actually means buttocks (well it is actually that fleshy part just beneath the butt cheek above the meat of the back of the thigh). You will occasionally get a ham that comes from the sirloin but that's not a real ham. Bacon is most of the rest of the pig; primarily belly, back, sides and loin, almost never the thigh or buttock.

Bacon is awesome. And seeing as we have pig/pork based dishes already in game, I see no reason as to why it shouldn't exist :o

Wow, this has been quite the learning experience for me
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

If you like New Zealand lamb, try Swiss lamb. You would be astonished how much better it is if you take it from animals grown naturally on a mountain pasture, trust me. I used to go for NZ over European lamb, but since I tried swiss, I'd never go back.

The only other lamb I like is the Manchester one, but that one is more for the ears and less for the mouth ;)

As a vegetarian there was an obvious choice for me but bacon is one of the few meats that would tempt me to stop being a veggie.
Have you ever tried it? I know it's like the holy grail of food for some people (if you believe the internet), but while I know many wonderful, delicious types of meat, I don't like bacon at all.

    Yes, I wasn't veggie for my 1st 40 years.
The only meats I miss at all are veal (which was why I became veggie, if I couldn't have veal I certainly wasn't bothered about giving up roast beef or steak which seem to be the most popular meats in the UK), bacon and liver.
