No, they are not smart enough for that...

When you look at the totality of the complaints that actually stick to ESO.... you see a big picture of extreme overconfidence and rank amatuer performance.

It is obvious that they never tested Voice chat in any major way.... and certainly not with people having bad connections.... or being really onnoxious. They play tested with a bunch of nice people with extremely fast connections and high quality mics, and assumed thats how everybody lived.

They obviously didn't think much about end game before PC release.... hence the convoluted levelling system.

And then they either were naive about how experience is broken by bugs... and so a good majority of their work has actually been fixing bugs.... probably a big part of the delay in console release.

The lack of response is probably because they are sweating bullets and completely out of their depth.

The biggest you-tuber in their game gets fed up with the mismanagement of end game

Console players .... buy into the game in huge numbers.... but immediately recognize the failure of their comm system, and the group finder, essential... especially on consoles is FUBAR.

I bet these days are some very looong days for the middle management devs.

I really dislike the fanboyish attitude some people have,I get it you like voice chat,so do i,But it doesnt mean text chat is a bad idea, nobody is forcing you to use text chat,we are the ones who get forced to use voice chat,And only having voice chat removes so much of the social aspect of the game. Why cant we have both?

I am getting so frustrated that the group finder doesnt work and its so hard to find a group,You cant type in zone chat that you are looking for a group,a certain item and so one,Becouse there is no text chat,And the guild channels are usually empty,People rarely use voice chat, people are just in their own xbox live partys,Yeah i think voice chat is great for pvp and dungeons (once you actually find a group)

Seriously having text chat just adds to the game,Make it a more social game

Please zos i have been supporting the game for a long time but now i am not supporting you

there is just no feel of the community anymore becouse the lack of text chat,Most people especially on the eu server can be either anti social or they do not speak english or speak bad english so they may be able to read and write better english then they hear/speak. I am one of them

It would be nice to pug v12 plus players for trials with text chat.

This is exactly what I mean when I say that a lot of the other game systems depended on the wider communication net that text-based chats provide, and w/out them it just makes doing some things in-game much clunkier than intended.

    Unnecessarily so.

You can still use those systems, sure, but it makes it a lot more frustrating than it has to be and certainly less efficient. Not to mention, many players have already seen how much easier it is to use them w/ a text-based chat.

It might be different if there wasn't already another version of the game that we've been playing for over a year to show us how much easier it is comparatively when you can reach a much wider range of players who can read your words at their leisure.

    This exacltly.

They "tested" it in a closed setting with a very limited number of players.

One large beta weekend would have shown them it was a terrible decision.

They aren't showing up here now because from the many reviews in mags and sites that have mentioned the lack of communication in game and lack of text chat causing it to the pleas here what can they say ?

They don't admit bad decisions , they cling to even terrible decisions and just duck talking about it.

What? Why in the HELL would anyone basically buy the entire game again just for them to unfix something that wasn't broken?

    Don't encourage them.

    (appologies for potential double post)

They actually did have a beta. Several of those of us who were in it have come forward to say that we found the chat situation completely unacceptable and went on at great length in the post-beta survey about WHY it was a problem.

They fell on deaf ears, I don't even know why they did the survey. It was apparently just a vague attempt to sound like they care since literally nothing changed between beta and release.

Still no text chat, still crashes just as often as PC, still has all the same bugs (most of which were ported from PC and still exist on ALL THREE platforms.).

As has been stated several times over, the whole thing just seems like they're in over their heads and instead of attacking any problems they're just running around with their arms up screaming in panic.

Just had 6 people in group for trials but needed 12. I would bet all my gold and gear with text chat I could have got 6 more for a run. Oh well...without text chat this game feels much more like a single player game then a mmo.

I had to block all voice chat because of this. This is a huge problem for me. Being forced into game chat. We should have options to shut it off. The devs of this game have no clue what they are doing i honestly doubt they are even gamers.

I find myself in the last section of the last questline in Coldharbor, having cleared everything leading up to there and I think my cares just ran out. I haven't been bothered to go on the last several days at all.

And that's with barely a month of it off and on. Imagine working on it for years.

All of the reasons that I find myself disinterested now are amateurish problems that shouldn't have been in a beta product let alone a complete, released product and then ported into additional platforms a year after the fact...

I think I realized a bit ago why they've done this. Allow me to walk you through my potentially convoluted logic:

I think Diablo 3 may have sort have started this but more likely it was Destiny.

Destiny has a large amount of group content that actually requires a group to complete, but it has absolutely zero in-game communication beyond your fireteam voice comms, i.e., party chat. Beyond that there's a scant four emotes, useless for communication, and there's PSN/XBL messaging. Additionally they have a similarly worthless group finder, the difference being it actually works for MOST content. Content you can easily solo if you're decently geared. However, content that REQUIRES a group has NO queuing.

I thought they were just off their rockers for the longest time but browsing around a few sites today it struck me: brilliantly evil free marketing.

By having no form of in-game communication, by arbitrarily removing the ability for players to find a group automatically, they force external communications.

ESO remains, as of this moment, the #2 forum for Xbox one (Destiny is #1) and #4 for PS4 (Destiny is again #1) for forum popularity on GameFAQs. Similar popularity exists all over the net (for both titles).

By restricting our communications they're forcing people to seek out other people to group with within their preferred communities and generating a lot of completely artificial activity, a false appearance of popularity.

It's not that the game is strictly that popular, it's that the people playing it have no other means of doing ANYTHING.

ESO is also #9 for PC, probably because you're not allowed to trade here.

Players seeking groups for dungeons and trials and pvp, seeking buyers for their wares and people selling that recipe or material they need, are generating a vast amount of user traffic that keeps the game(s) in the limelight far longer than they would be otherwise.

They don't really have an incentive to implement text chat as a result.

Of course, the part they didn't count on is Destiny can get away with these shenanigans considering it's got all the depth and complexity of Paris HIlton. ESO actually needs immediacy in its communications and with the scaling of group content, finding an appropriately leveled group to do a dungeon after your initial encounter with it becomes ever more difficult as your level rises, guilds are left with no easy way to organize and PvP doesn't tend to function well on anything but realtime, mass communication, which simply can't be managed with disparate forum threads all across the net.

Maybe I'm crazy but the pieces definitely all fit, the timing as well considering when the text chat mysteriously disappeared.

    inb4 modded for conspiracy theory.

@Amiculi that definitely could have been the reason, but if it is zos really shot them selfs in the foot because destiny isnt a real mmo like people keep claiming it to be it has no trade or crafting or meaningful end game progression simply put nothing in destiny promotes a social in game community and you can tell from the moment you get to the tower.

Signed. Text chat and voice chat together is a win/win. How could anyone not want it? I can be in group voice chat questing with my buddies while selling items on the text chat to the whole area?! Yes please. Trying to sell things in voice chat limits you to like 20 meters away. Nobody else can hear you.

Just my opinions. So YES, I want text chat for consoles!

They will likely add it so why continue to bemoan and complain?
There is NO indication they will. The last they said was they "might" add a "replacement" for text chat in the future on one of the ESO Lives. That's why we keep bemoaning and complaining.

If they actually confirm we WILL get text chat or this "replacement" (and if the replacement actually works right, unlike the current "emote bubbles"), then I'm sure this thread will die.

EDIT: I see you removed that phrase from the post I quoted (The one right above this). I'm leaving my response for anyone else that might say the same thing still though.

Hey employees of ZOS that are currently hold up being whipped by the spys from Bungivision, why don't you start a secret side project and make a keyboard for the PS4 controller like Sony did for the PS3 controller and release it with an update that implements text chat and an auction house.

You know obviously make it have a cool paint job and some macro keys that instantly bring up the AH or check sales status, oh and have it light up as well when something sells.

Maybe then the few of you that might actually want to take this game into the future could buy out the blockers, and start shooting straight.

This week i really started to see the discontent building mostly from the lack of text communication. I've been lucky to some degree and made a few really fun helpful people, and we've been trying our best to keep each other wihtin the 4 level limit for everyone to get loot for 1-49 dungeons. Though, each day-week it is getting harder and harder to coordinate playtime with onoly a half dozen people. We've all tried meeting more people through other guilds and random PUGS whe we can actually get a group with the horrible group finder, but the lack of text is just a brick wall, always there making the most basic of mmo activities a complete chore . This week i've heard the same complaint from every player i know that the lack of communication is wearing them out. The leveling in this game is pretty long compared to other mmos, making for a very long grind when you might only be able to get in one good dungeon a day instead of one every 30 min to an hour. Not to mention the poor 'new to mmo' players completely lost and confused where to even start without advice from zone chat. I've already seen the casualties of people choosing to put the game down- not b/c they don't think its fun, but b/c ZOS has literally taken the M out of Mmo... i'm rambling now, but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ZOS GIVE US TEXT. --DCUO had a fully custoizable text, voice and grouping system over 5 yers ago on last gen console--- i know its possible. YOUR going to ruin your chance to make huge profits with dlc and store sales. get it done.

Text communication is a must for:

    Guild recruitment
    Guild chat
    Organising groups
    PvP coordination
    Instance organisation
    Instance recruitement
    Deaf People
    People with anxiety issues

Also my missus stopped playing because everytime she spoke in the coms she got a hundred psn friend invites cos you know GIRL! ON TEH INTERWEBS! ZOMG!

There are probably tons of other reasons its needed. But the main one is I cant believe anyone would be incompetent enough to release an MMO without it.

What amazes me most, is that they read through the post and moderate the various rude/insulty posts, but yet not a single comment to allay our fears that lacking viablw text chat is simply ruining the fun factor for some of us.

So far this week i've logged in, checked my mail for deliveries then logged straight back out, why? No one in guild chat speaks, I have area chat still turned off, and i'm quite bored of the single player environment, I can get that from skyrim.

Spending an hour or so in the group finder while bumbling round talking to myself is dull. I can't even have music on while questing qithout having to mute it to hear the pretty good voiced quests.

A short post by the dev's to actually broach the topic would be brilliant....they managed to respond on reddit, yet not on official forums? Bah to that.
