So apparently the consoles versions have absolutely no form of communication at all now, with text chat coming much later.
I read his post as an intentional dig at how the current Voice system on console is broken anyways. So if they aren't going to address the Voice issue, and not add text chat...then you have a dead MMO.

What's broken with Voice on Console?
    1) Quit Auto-Joining us to Area Chat.
    2) Guild management of 500 members is impossible with the current voice channel system.
    3) Guild officers should auto-join officer chat channel.
    4) The quality of the voice is terrible compared to the Party chat in Xbox itself.
    5) Being able to turn off voice chat completely. Current workaround, make a Xbox party of one.

And the unfixable...players that don't know how to use a mic, don't have a mic, or have kinect as their mic, inviting us into their living room
A dead mmo that just outsold GTA on consoles? That dead mmo? Its sales numbers compared to the number of individual posters on this thread imply the game is in no danger of dying.

Casuals are going to save this game. Adapting to the needs of the casuals will help prop up development revenue.

Will that lead to the holy grail of mmo design? Prob not. But no one is. A special little snowflake here. The wants of the many will out shine the whims of the few.

I'm not against text chat but I bristle at melodramatic 'sky is falling' comments.

Adding 2 vet ranks is not catering to casuals... ZOS is schizo

Yes and no. When casuals see the vet 16 killing them they will rush to the crown store and double fist those exp potions!

    So yes and no.

Most casuals will migrate to games without a box price like Warthunder, Warframe, DCUO on PS4 or Neverwinter and World of tanks on xbox1

    Please add text chat.

I like the voice chat in low population areas and all but it doesnt do much for finding groups. I already had a few friends stop playing and no text was their primary complaint.

Give it until the end of the year. If they don't fix voice chat and add text chat, see where it is. Sales numbers on console don't mean longevity which is key to a MMOs life. Console sales are B2P, yeah...ZOS got their money...but I already see people in my guilds playing other console games. They lasted about 2 weeks.

Currently among all of my friends who got the game, I'm the only one still playing.

They mostly quit between level 15 and 25. They largely cite lack of community as part of it but I think most of them just found the game boring in the long run. I've been enjoying the PSO-like simplicity of it. However the fact remains that between my friends and my friends of friends, upwards of 50 people bought it and there's just me playing it now, so I guess ZOS got their money there... That's a lot of sales without worry of them taking up server resources.

I'm not saying it was JUST the lack of text chat that did it but it was certainly of no help, most commonly they quit at the first group dungeon as they couldn't find a party (everyone arriving at different times/on different factions). I told them to just move on and we could hit them later but no dice.

The notable thing here is that most of these people would qualify as casuals most likely. They buy the latest fad game and they play it for like a day or two then wait for the next fad game. They rolled through ESO to Batman and now they're back on Payday 2 and Witcher 3. I'm sure they'll eventually end up back on GTA Online or Battlefield before long. They always go back to those.

If we dont get text chat back as an option then take away voice chat too as an option cause they seem to want us to not be able to communicate properly anyways.... Make text chat an option to keep everyone happy... You would figure text chat is a no brainer in any mmorpg and as long as people keep talking about needing it like we do the devs will have to put it back in... And if you dont want it in easy fix just disable it and use your mic... Just dont force people who dont want to hear lame teenagers on a mic as an only means to communicate in a mmorpg....

Bought 3 of the Imperial Edition for PS4 , sent the two unopened back to Amazon. One was for son as Xmas present , other was for a buddy who doesn't want to play on the PS4 due to how little communication there is.

The book and statue were cool , sticking now with the PC version for myself.

I just get the feeling Zenimax will add it much , much too late to do any good unfortunately.

It's basically a semi- mmo , more single player game feel on the PS4 than on the PC.

Seeing zone wide constant talk in the PC version just made it stand out ever worse when on the PS4.

ZOS, please implement optional text chat. I am unable to use voice, so without text chat the "MM" part of this MMO is entirely closed to me. There's only so much information I can impart to others by juggling fire or dancing around in my pants.

Finally! Now that I have forum access, I can voice my opinion on this formidable thread!

Ok, for those who don't want to read the full post, here's a TLDR: Text Chat should not even be an option, it should be mandatory.

Now that I got the NO TEXT CHAT people to start flaming me, I can start explaining why I say this.

First of all, I assume that all, or most, of the people saying they don't want text chat have never played an MMORPG.

I have been playing MMORPGs since 2001. The very first MMORPG I played was Final Fantasy XI, on PS2! I won't go into details as to how that game changed my life, but I will say that the chat box was very well readable from my couch on my 27 inch 540x480 TV. Now, with ESO, running in 1920x1080, with most people having 32+ inches TVs, I don't see how a chat box would be hard to read.

Many people have aleready stated that voice only was excluding the deaf and mute people, but let's add it here just for the sake of giving more reasons. The same should be said about the unwanted noises that we come across. (heavy breathing, static, people shouting, TV sound too loud and all those little things that are not part of "communicating").

But my biggest problem with the voice only system is this: The other day I'm with a friend. We get in group and do some stuff together. All is fine until the next day, when I hear: "Hey, that was fun all that guild PvP yesterday, we should do that more often". So what that means, is that while my friend and I were in group chat, we MISSED the guild leader saying in guild chat that he was starting a guild event. Now, this may seem to be nothing to those of you who never played an MMO in the past, but in some guilds I was in previous games, missing a guild event because you were in an exp group was reason enough to get kicked from the guild.

I don't say all guilds should be hardcore like that, but for some people, the guild is more important than anything else in an MMO, and in my opinion, the chat of AT LEAST your main guild should be visible AT ALL TIMES. With the voice chat, this is not even an option. As soon as there is more than 5 people on it, it starts getting a lot of static and people get bored and they go to PSN party chat, meaning they won't know when guild events will come up either.

For those who say "You bought the game with just voice chat, deal with it" I say no. I did not buy a game with just voice chat, I bought The Elder Scrolls Online, and by doing so, I expected to have the EXACT same game than on PC, minus the add-ons.

For those who say "Text chat is full of spam" I say that's what chat filters and /ignore, (or /blacklist, depending on the game) are for.

For those who say: "If you want text chat, play on PC" I say I'm not going to pay another 1000+$ for another PC that will break in 2 years, been there, done that. Now I play on console, which are, you know, MADE to play video games.

Also, Wanting to have a chat box doesn't mean we want to play Keyboard & Mouse style. I still want to play with my controller, but I need a means to communicate with those who are not in my current voice chat channel.

Let's go with an example: I queue on the Group finder. The group finder being what it is, and me being a DPS, I wait about 2 hours before getting a group. After the group is made, I say in group chat: Hey guys! How is it going? - No reply - Ok guys, I queued for 3 different dungeons so I'm not sure if you queued just for one or if you even hear me, but if you did, go to the dungeon in question and I will meet you there. - then I wait about 5 minutes, no reply, no one headed to a dungeon. - OK guys, I just teleported to X dungeon, you may teleport on me. - then I wait another 5 minutes, no reply, no one teleports to me. - Hey guys, go to Social -> Group-> click me then Travel to player. - Again I wait 5 minutes, nothing happens. I leave the group, having lost 2:30 hours.

So, In finishng, to the guy who was saying that people want text chat so they do not want to listen to instructions, I say What?! I want text chat because I want to make sure that if people don't hear my instructions, THEY CAN AT LEAST READ THEM!!!!! This is not a solo game with alot of random npc's running around doing their own things, it's not Diablo or Destiny either, it's a mmorpg, where people are supposed to play with each other, so communication shouldn't be optional, it should be mandatory.

Now that I got this through, I have to go post about the group finder, because I'm tired of people queuing as tank or healer while they are DPS.

    Cheers!

Now the game has been out a while.
It's obvious most people don't use voice chat outside of their friends.. you don't get anyone in a group talking that aren't friends, the only thing you hear these days is "i'll give you x amount for a bite" if you are listening to area chat waiting for vamp/werewolf.

People in general are in console party chats, which leaves the in game voice almost redundant, if it's not the bite thing, it's rarely you hear anything else other than someones tv feedback or something like a watching a youtube video on something else.

Since i'm a tank, the group finder rarely works at all, if it does, i'll be put into a group and no-one talks but will send me psn messages asking which dungeon we should do or can i help with another dungeon after etc.

It's becoming increasingly difficult to get dungeons done if it's not with a friend, alot of people don't get the tactics.
In one dungeon the boss puts aoe all over the floor, then when he changes the screen to black you have to step into the white aoe circles, the amount of times the pugs can't just understand it, i have to send a message on the ps4 message system to tell them how the mechanic works, because they aren't on voice. Sort it out, it's getting tiresome.

Would of just been alot more easier for me to of done this in game rather than me adding steps like:

View profile = load = send message = wait

I agree completely. It seems the initial mayhem of area voice chat with open mics, babys, blaring music etc. Chased alot of players off of voice chat.

Sending psn msgs sucks, its not the typing as Zos would have us believe its the profile loading and what not. Since its such a long process to get a group alot of the player base has little dungeon experience.

My favorite is waiting an hour+ for a group and then people leaving or being afk when it finally forms.

Well i need todo the daily on 2 characters, I should be back in 4 hours or so

He actually is even though witcher sold more in its opening week. @mrskinskull has said previously he hasn't got mmo experience so how he knows what constitutes a dead mmo I don't know. I'll go ahead and help out. It's not about launch sales it's about player retention , adding to the player base as you go . Casuals as he calls it don't play the same game for half a decade or more but this is what any mmo needs . A base of players in it for the long haul.

Catering to only casual players is suicide and I've seen it before. Aiming for a high turnover of new players that stick around and drop some cash on the game before moving on . Not a sound model imo. That's what you do when the mmo starts struggling. ironically in an mmo setting I'd suggest it's those against text that are the special snowflakes. Yknow going against the commonly accepted standards .if this is your 1st mmo mrskinskull you shouldn't be commenting like you know what makes one successful. Need to get your head around the fact this is supposedly an mmo . Not your standard buy and trade after completion type game

I lost my MMO virginity to FFXI...such good times.
I won't go into detail on how it changed my life, either, but as a vocally impaired girl, it was such an amazing experience to communicate freely with a keyboard to other people who shared the same interests as me.
Not soliciting sympathy, but there are tons of situations where people take their voices for granted, and it was so incredible to actually "talk" with someone with a similar gaming interest.
I know people have mentioned that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few on the apparently taboo topic of text chat for ESO, but for me...

To be fair, the topics on his thread are a way more pressing concern than text chat and have a much higher potential of leading to the game's "death". Multiple forms of communication is pointless in a dead game.

And of course here's the obligatory, "I don't care if they add an optional text chat box for those who want it." Have a feeling someone is going to misconstrue what I say if I don't throw that in here.

There hasn't been a reply to this thread specifically, though they have talked about this topic at a few points in the past.

The latest they have said was about a month and half ago, when they said that they were looking at feedback from players and weren't opposed to adding more ways to communicate among players, but a text chatbox itself most likely wouldn't be the solution they chose.

Since then, they have been funneling posters to this specific thread and locking / closing other threads to do w/ the subject, but have not chimed in on this thread itself since they began doing that other than to tell people to keep it civil when the debate has gotten out of hand.

Personally, I've more or less stopped playing this game after having played (and paid) since beta. I bought the console version to enjoy ESO from the comfort of my living room, but using many of its systems are just clunky w/out the text chatbox that they relied on for functionality.

I log in on PC from time to time to feed mounts, but I didn't buy the PS4 version so that I could play exclusively on my PC.

There's an unfortunate disparity between the quality of the community experience on the console and PC. I didn't expect that to be the case. Sure, I knew that there wouldn't be addons and the graphics wouldn't be quite as good as my high-end PC, but VOIP-only seems like a band-aid fix to the communication issue.

And that's a darn shame, because the PS4 version honestly seems to have a lot more players than PC. Buuuut, they also seem to be dropping like flies recently, which is something that can be expected after any MMO launch.

I feel that a text chatbox would have definitely helped the game's retention for a lot of the players who are leaving. : /

The majority of the playerbase is on consoles. Vr16 .... Who cares 99.9% of us arent vr14. CP's ... Who cares 99.9% of us have under 100. So these changes arent going to effect us anytime soon where text chat does. And the consoles are the vast majority.
