Nobody wants to hear the randoms in area chat though. It's 90% trolls, 10% immature kids making moronic jokes about the male reproductive organ. Literally. I haven't heard a single conversation in game chat yet that didn't have some little kid yelling or grown man sexually harassing someone, or background noise so bad you couldn't hear what the person was saying if the raid depended on it. Sure, Voice chat is definitely needed for raids and whatnot - but when you're not in a raid it's just an inconvenience.

Is text chat really any different? You do realize that you can turn off area chat, right? Having text chat wouldn't solve any of the issues you describe.

one is a little box that is easy to ignore on the side of your screen. the other is the entirety of one of your primary senses. i don't consider that the same.

So sight is not a primary sense anymore?

So you don't see a difference to yelling and hearing things in you're ear that is offensive and things people want to ignore, compared to a fast glance and ignore it?

If you're asking if I would rather hear something offensive vs see something offensive, I would have say neither. And if that's what you're trying to argue then we have all lost sight of reality.

This thread is probably the most spam filled offensive thread in the forums. It has become what you all are arguing against. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Every last one of you.

You actually mean this thread was never about how people are acting in consoles and being offensive which is why they have to shut voice off? Well them am sorry I guess I misunderstood!

If the chat screen took up your entire field of vision to the point of not seeing anything else, i wold see the comparison. But it doesn't.

Ok ,maybe not that extreme, it would be better to say a translucent visor or something

Oh god. Please zos don't make us have to play with the controller in one hand and A keyboard in the other. Pleasssssse. No text chat.

I know its ironic that I'm typing this. If zos forums had voice chat I wouldn't have to hen peck out that joke.

    There are problems with this:

    1. Those of us that hate chat, remove ourselves from it. First thing I do in the game is leave of Area chat. This then leaves me with no way to communicate with other players; because I don't want to deal with the annoying people in voice comms. No communication is never the correct answer, so we ask for text chat to give us an option besides listening to people's whole living rooms at once; or listening to squeakies, or blaring music (I've run into all of these in game, I gave Area chat a chance, and it was just annoying, so I left it).

    2. Most pro-text chat people are not anti-voice. You know where I do use voice comms, with my friends and guild. So it isn't really even people are against voice, we are pro-text. These concepts are not mutually exclusive. Use voice comms where appropriate and use text chat where appropriate. It is ignorant to believe that each method does not have pros and cons and scenarios where they are better suited.

    3. Precedence says controller and keyboard is a very viable and often preferred method of playing a game, one simply needs to look at FFXIV:ARR (on any of the systems, PC, PS3 or PS4) to see many many many people using this exact setup.

    4. We live in a society that increasingly uses text for basic communication (one simply needs to look at how people use phones and the internet in general), even though voice options are available. This game is now bucking that trend for absolutely no valid reason.

    5. You don't speak for all console gamers (this is in response to your other posts in the locked thread); I am purely a console gamer, and I desire text chat. So please, avoid generalizing us, you can speak about what "you" prefer, but don't say console gamer this, console gamer that; because I exist and disagree with you on this completely.

    Groan.

The only people that want text chat are the PC people who aren't happy the experience is exactly the same as on PC. And it doesn't have to be. Text chat will be full of spam and most console players will turn it off. The people who are genuinely trying to communicate with text will be ignored and frustrated because no one will be scouring the text scrawl for their communications.

Typing I need healing and just saying it are two different things. I hate when my non mic friends send me some message like 'behind you' and its completely useless.

Plus if you are typing in the heat of battle when you should be helping, your team hates you. I just thought I should type this to you so you could know what everybody has been saying about you. Jk. ;)

I'd rather quit ESO and play something else. I will not use the voice chat to speak or listen to random people. After a week, I'm pretty much convinced that I don't even want to hear other players's voices/sounds anymore.

It would be great if they at least add an option to auto-leave area chat whenever I switch the zone.

    Honestly worth re-quoting again.

I sadly think this will be what finally makes Zenimax reverse their decision.

The question is , will it be too late before they do it.

They've shown they can make a fun game , but at the same time make stupid decisions that add up to not making it worth it.

I'd add in that not allowing consoles players to remap their own controls because they thought it was too confusing for console players is at the top of the insulting decisions they made.

    No, the opposite in fact.
If all the miserable people leave, the game community gets better.
Please stay and enjoy mingling with people who have something in common with you.

These aren't strangers. These people with children and jokes and nervous questions are just like you.
They like the same game style and type as you do.
You are too busy sour graping to see an opportunity for making many new friends.
I've added at least ten new ESO friends to my list.
    Cmon.
Stay. Typing is too slow for subtext, implication, and all the fun nuances of actual human contact.

Also curious why does the in game voice chat sound so terrible compared to psn?.

Sold a ww bite today and for the life of us we could not make out each other in game.
so we went to sending voice recordinga via message as i was in a private party at the time.

Again , another avoiding the fact that zone wide chat lets you make more friends in game and talk with more people.

It's less restrictive in a MASSIVELY setting. You can effectively talk with more people in text than you can in voice. Scrolling up to read ones missed , replying to different people without others having to be involved and vice versa. And larger group chats.

It's not all about combat or only knowing the people in your guild.

Some of us actually like to meet and talk with NEW people who aren't in the 20 yard range in game.

Most pro text people use a combination of text and TS/Vent/Raidcall.

    Multi-talented.

I can see where the slower folks would be scared of that though.

Handling voice and typing probably is too much for some of you.

I really don't how this is even a contested arguement, both text chat and voice chat are both pretty essential to a game like this. I don't think anyone for text chat disputed that it was important. Text or voice doesn't really matter people will spew offensive things and spam the chat either way, that being said if I can't coordinate with others for things like trading and the like without having to go to an off-game site to ask around then the game is doing something fundamentally wrong with that, It takes my eyes off the game and reminds that after all it is a game instead of trying to get immersed in it.

Is this a "miserable person" ? I've met him in the past in another game , and others like him.

    youtube.com/watch?v=V_2FycHamfA&t=72m36s

He now writes articles at times about how game developers should do all they can to include the disabled in their games.

No I find getting to meet people in a massive environment in text lets you meet many , many more people from different walks of life. I guess you prefer to stick with your little known circle.

    Good for you.

No text chat will break this game. I hold out hope for text chat, but I will quit the game if not resolved in a few months, very sad to say that, but I am seriously disappointed in this game. Should have stated on the box and in digital download, "warning no text chat". I feel ripped off.

Vision is largely focused and specific. You focus on a given thing and the rest is vague.

The gentle ticking of a chat box is barely notable if you're not paying attention to it.

Hearing is largely general and easily muddled, even the tiniest noise can draw you to major distraction, a dripping faucet in another room, someone's music a block away, the incessant feedback loop of someone else's game audio.

For the umpteenth time, no one wants to erase your precious area chat, we just want a zone chat for organizing more easily, you'd be allowed to turn it off same as we do area voice chat. Then, when organization is achieved, boom, voice chat.

    It's like magic.

No one's going to be typing in the middle of combat, they don't even do that on PC in guild play, they use voice chat via third party VOIP, but before they use that, when organizing the group, they use text chat.

This has been the way of things in all MMO's since VOIP was available. It's got nothing to do with being stuck in the past or stubborn or socially awkward or female or disabled or foreign or the like, it's because it works.

Information is best parsed in large volumes visually as each bit can be focused on one at a time and reviewed individually as a persistent concept. Voice works for immediacy and convenience when time is of the essence, but when time is NOT important and there are many, many participants, text is irrefutably better.

If you need to get up from the couch and answer the phone or door, for example, and you return, that text log is still there and you've missed out on nothing, with nothing but voice chat the people you were speaking to could have left and you'd have no idea why. With both text and voice those people could've said "Oh hey, he's afk, I"ll tell him in text for when he gets back," and boom, like some arcane magic, on return there's a message waiting for you that you weren't there for the moment it occurred. Bill, Ted, and Marty McFly are all three suitably impressed by this amazing command of the past.

But no, it's been determined by the Vocal Vatican that text chat shall be banished for ten and ten years until the heretical apostypes' fingers wither from disuse and vocal chords atrophy in their silent, anti-social Tamriel. So spaketh StaticWax.

Ok I know talking about other mmos is bad news. But never winter on Xbox utilized text chat and it worked great except you couldn't cycle through " trade,zone,etc...". It was all in one blob and you could not stop the text at all to read anything. It worked fine near people. I used my cell with smartglass n could "text" in game. Easy as pi.

Warframe, a F2P game on console, kinda a mmo, but it utilizes text chat to perfection. Its a box you open from start menu or if someone whispers to you it will pop up. You could tab through the different chat areas. Was perfect.

Someone said only PC players want text chat. Lemme fix that for you. People that have played real MMOs before want text chat. As I am a console gamer, die hard, but I understand text chat is what we need.

We do not need to scrap voice chat. But really guys. Saying its just as easy to ignore voice as it is text is lame. Sure if you turn it off it goes away. But this is a MMO, no matter how many of you new console players think its a single player game with some multiplayer needs to get real. You are SUPPOSED to interact with other players. Running around muted breeds lack of communication. Lack of communication frustrates players. There is even threads of "console players lacking in communication/activity with other players".

The voice chat is a problem if you want to actually interact with other players. Even guild chat can be bad. 5 people can try to talk at once and no one understands it. Text chat 10 people can type at once and you can reply to each person.

However, voice chat should not be scrapped as some people like it, unfortunately alot of immature people love the voice chat as they troll people and just make their game time not as enjoyable(my opinion, shared by many). I could easily avert my eyes when trolls are text chatting. But if I want to be interactive(meaning chat not muted), sure I can talk to people just fine sometimes. But all it takes is one person out of the MILLIONS that play to start screaming, getting beat by their parents(literally heard some father I assume beat the snot out of a tweener child for yelling him to shut the f*** up. I laughed loud into zone chat), play loud music(or quiet music. When I'm gaming, I'm gaming. Not singing Miley Cyrus and twerking), the list goes on. I had someone repeat everything I say. Now I've watched super troopers and found it funny as he was doing the repeater, but alas, one can only take so much before they mute the chat and go on not knowing if someone is trying to get our attention(when I quest I don't stop to smell the roses, had someone chase me for 5 minutes to ask where to buy soul gems).

Seriously, I want a good reason why text chat should not be added. Voice chat would stay. In the options you could turn off text chat or voice chat, or both, or leave both on. Why would anyone in their right or even insane mind not just say yes. Everyone is happy. Noones left out. You could actually have your cake and eat it too.

lol you guys still entertaining this stupid anti text chat arguments THIS GAME NEEDS A TEXT CHAT screw the people screaming in mics. text chat makes grouping easier it will make the community better. how the f do you get groups effectively for dungeons through a proximity chat? text chat is way more convenient and it would bring more people together than this dumb find people in proximity chat and guilds . someone is spamming chat add a ignore option this isn't rocket science zenimax lets get it done asap.oo yea then we can start the talk about why we need a combat log too.

I haven't come across a single person within gameplay saying they hate voice chat. Ps4. 25 hrs played. The op is just wrong.

Jk. ;)
    Wrong.

I am console solely and use mic only when in dungeons or raids. I would prefer text chat for finding a group in open world, as it would be easier to fill and get going. Zone text chat 'lf tank then gtg, send pm' is easier than sitting and waiting forever.

This couldn't be further from the truth ... "socialy awkward" people tend to flock to MMORPG's because they can meet people & make friends in them with-out the pressure of seeing others face to face, or speaking in groups to others.

Text chat has not been natural to consoles for a long time. Hardly anyone has the keyboard plug ins. It would be resources waisted because it will hardly get used. The ONLY time it would be handy is when the chat goes down for everyone, but let's just hope that is a problem they will get resolved very soon.

Something like DC Universe has excellent chat that's very easy to use just using the controller. If text chat is done properly, it's easily usable without a keyboard. I won't use a keyboard on my console but do want text chat and use it all the time in other games.

Don't forget it remembers often used words so once you've used regular phrases a few times, it would take no time at all to say something like "EP seiging Ash"

Another scenario tonight... "I feel like queuing for dungeon right now since I hit lv10 assassin... I know it's really late, but I don't mind waiting for a few hours, yeah, what the hell..." click, click, click, I'm queued.

Ten minutes later, queue pops me and two others into group together; we're waiting on our tank. I say hi, and there is no response. Maybe 15 minutes go by, and then both members drop out. I start the queue over again. Twenty minutes go by and I'm back in queue with two other members, a healer and a dps, and we're waiting on a tank again. I say hi again, and again there is no response. Five minutes go by, and then one member drops. Two minutes, the other member drops. By this time, I start trying to see if guild members are on and want to fill a tank slot, and no one is talking or responding. Oh, there were plenty of members in chat too, but no response to the simple "Hey guys." I mean, they're there, and I know they're listening because they wouldn't populate the list unless they had the game on listen at least -- that's how it works.

Granted, I had never said word one in this particular guild before now, but the impression I have gotten thus far for console is that either people are incredibly insular and shy, or a lot of people have their own parties going on PSN outside the game.

I was at my wit's end, so I say out loud in area chat, "@#%^ console!" I shut the game down, and vow to never touch the thing again. After all, PC gets controller support soonish, and WTH am I doing playing this on console when my PC smokes the game running it all on Ultra? I get to type in a chat box, and at least everyone in a zone can see the text, everyone in a guild can read my messages, and even if there aren't any responses initially, at some point someone is going to type, "invite me!" And, from my previous experience playing on PC, hardly anyone is rude enough to queue for less than ten minutes, and then give up and drop queue because it's taking too long to find a tank...

One of the benefits I see to adding text chat is RPing. It is hard to RP using only voice, especially on races such as Argonians and Khajiits, or on toons that are the opposite sex from your real self.

One is in a window that you can simply not look at, the other blasts through the TV sound system for the whole family to hear.

On my PC guild, we have started to recruit again.

When we are in Cyrodiil every night on voice chat and a new below 10 player logs in, it's nice and welcoming for us to be able to say hi to them.

On the PS4, unless I'm doing it wrong, you can only talk in one channel at a time, so we are in a cyrodiil group, we simply cannot communicate with the rest of our guild (or any other group in Cyrodiil)

I use about 50/50 text/voice on the PC. I don't pug, I don't buy/sell through text chat, most of the time I'm only interested in guild chat or faction if in Cyrodiil. But those times make text a necessity for me.

I haven't run a dungeon etc for years in any mmo without using voice, but at the same time have often had people along that can't communicate through voice whether for health reasons or whatever, and my groups have always happily accommodated those via text chat while still using voice for the rest of the group.

Sure you get spam with text, but I would rather get text spam than random strangers blaring through my speakers. Like many others, my voice is now permently off on console and I'm simply playing a single player game on it.

I expected to split my time about 50/50 between console and PC, but due to this, I'm rarely playing the console version at all at the moment :(

I'm a console player and I bought this game to tide me over until FFXIV's expansion came out and I couldn't get over the lack of text chat.
Like others have said, it doesn't feel like an mmo, it feels like a fairly mediocre single player Elder Scrolls game with a few 4-player co-op dungeons shoehorned in.
Most of the time I can't even tell whether the characters on screen are npc's, enemies or actual real people.

Compare that to the launch of FFXIV:Heavensward, where the chat box has been constantly full of people chatting, joking and organising groups, and it's easy to discern what's an enemy, what's a npc and what's a real live person.
The world feels alive and populated, whereas ESO just feels empty and berift of meaningful communication.

p.s. and in two days of playing Heavensward I've gotten one RMT tell...one.

I think we can all agree that hundreds of thousands of people play this game without text chat.

By your count, 188 people think strongly enough about it to post...

Sounds like a non issue to me.
