Never said it was. Smurf is pulling things out his ass again trying to compare FPS that don't need text chat to MMOs that do. I was only giving him a pass on Destiny being marketed as a Open world FPS...and it even fails at that, because it's open world is instanced with out of bounds death.
So what about console games as a whole @uberkull ? Surely you can agree that the majority of games, especially those that have any form of multiplayer, have little to no text chat support like our current MMORPG games have.
Lol anything that makes logical sense but that makes the point of adding text chat in the OP's opinion seems not to be an acceptable points in this post.
Considering Xbox one has only Neverwinter which is a free game that isn't selling free copies anywhere near that of paid TESO on PC. The other games with text chat...like Warframe which is similar to Destiny...also free and not doing so well
Then you have game similar to Destiny....BF, COD, Titanfall, Farcry or games similar to Neverwinter like Dragon Age and Diablo 3
Which all sold better are a very valid comparison and notable cause some exist on PC too different than console.
Then...you realize console gamers favor certain types of experiences on console based on money spent and sales, a logical observation is that the common theme are multiplayer games of any genre that are user friendly and all lack the use of an external keyboard seem to sale a lot better on consoles today compared to console games with text chat when they are cheaper or free.
To suggest that ZOS should only consider what other MMO games do is not logical and none are selling well on console with text chat.
To suggest ZOS or anyone in this thread should throw out any non MMO games when considering to add or not to add text chat in TESO is also not logical but only makes sense if the OP wants to argue a limited perspective and make it sound as if his position is accurate and supported by masses.
Whether the inclusion or exclusion of text chat falls within or outside a players preferences, it's more than obvious that with the flaws or issues PC gamers constantly post on these threads, the game needs to align with top selling titles and support and target a similar user friendly approach to be successful as there are other hurdles that will be criticized.
We all like and dislike many things but to jump on a "MMO must have XYZ" regardless of platform is outside of a logic based approach. To say text chat need to be added to avoid bad reviews....well many of the articles so far praise the game and though some touch on the absence of text chat, the context isn't a negative one but pointing out that it's different.
The game is poised to launch inline with a console gamers typical experience which gives it the best chance to succeed and IF those customers largely request to add or remove certain features after release....ZOS would be wise to address and adjust but to do anything now is just no logical in this market
Based on the games you are citing it sounds like what you want is a single player with co-op which while a common style of game on console it is not the same as MMO. If you want to talk about MMOs on console you should be mentioning FFXIV and DCUO both of which have done well on console and both of which have text chat.
I would also have to disagree with your experience of PvP working without text chat on beta. The lack of an ability to coordinate or even know if anyone else from your faction was even in the campaign was disturbing. As I predicted as soon as I read Jason's first reveal of their being no text chat it was no longer an Alliance wide conflict and was instead a place for roaming bands to find and gank each other. While the numbers were to small to possibly do a comparison to live I really can't see it playing out well long term without some means of effective Alliance wide communication.
You're incorrect. I desire a multiplayer experience. I desire a massive multiplayer online experience that on the Xbox one is customized to what makes sense and what will be fun and not a cumbersome experience.
PvP or any player coordination effort only requires planning. To conclude that there is only one way for this to work is a very narrow minded approach. The idea that people can't accomplish or coordinate online play with voice alone is odd. If this were war, there wouldn't be words popping up in the sky or being broadcasted for only one side in all of the war zone. It especially wouldn't stay up and somehow scroll as needed.
These experiences aren't realistic but instead created due to communication barriers. PC could have voice support but as ZOS shared VoIP is complex, more complex rather on PC so keyboard text chat makes the most sense considering how most PC gamers use a PC.
None of the logic on any platform is based on what a mmorpg game traditionally has but instead based on the logic of each platforms typical gamer and the base hardware and setup of the gaming room.
It's not preference, tradition or genre but rather creating and tailoring the experience to the room by machine.

I would say that someone like SOE/Daybreak has far more experience with console-MMOs than ZOS. Take DCUO as exmaple. 73% - 74% of the total playtime is generated on the console rather than the PC. On the console, the average player spends 3.6 times more money in the DCUO-shop the PC player does. And know what? DCUO has a textchat that is mainly used for trading and tactics in PvP/PvE. And that despite the fact, that the game has a good working voicechat. So, is Daybreak just stupid to integrate textchat on the console? I don't think so ... they just know that people tend to not use voicechat.
Take Destiny: no textchat, only voicechat. Biggest problem with random groups: you can't communicate. Why? Because most people just ignore voicechat. You can wipe 10 times and try to reach your group with voicechat, you will have no luck most of the time. Instead of using voicechat, most people prefer to leave the group.

You haven't provided any practical way for three raids in different guilds to communicate with each other in your response. Unless your suggesting that three group raid leaders have to keep creating a party chat to communicate with each other, if that is your proposal then with respect that is neither practical or sensible.
I think what would help you to understand the point of view of others in this thread would be for you to join a good PvP guild and play in Cyrodiil in a large raid group for 4 hours a day for a week with your chatbox open.

I use Teamspeak alot ... but, sorry, not for trading or random-groups (and that's only because most random players don't use voicechat). And not for ... trading. For trading? No. You? Really?
People act like that because there are things within a MMO, that just don't work with voicechat or predefined textphrases, it's that easy.

Each developer picks their design and target customer.
Daybreak and TESO based on what I'm seeing are VERY different. What works for one game doesn't always work for another but to say that TESO needs text chat on console is a bit silly.
Text chat...and let's be completely honest...is very rarely used to play the game. It's used to circumvent systems that people don't like or that people want to work differently so the text chat basically becomes a work around for many things that are built in. No one is pointing out that they can't play the game but rather that they can't circumvent the system so ZOS needs to do something......huh, really?
Interestingly similar to PC folks using team speak and vent to work around text chat only.
And again....it's not about MMO games.
Why are people acting like ZOS went on twitch live and said we aren't putting text chat into a MMO game on console cause it's an MMO and we want to be different.
That's not at all what was shared.
It was...we decided after testing different things that this approach of communication is best for these platforms based on the typical targeted console gamers setup. We want x experience for them so this made the best sense AND we are looking to add in radial text emotes.

So without text chat how exactly would three raids in different guilds communicate with each other to coordinate an attack? Trying to compare military discipline to gamers in voice chat is also chalk and cheese.
It's a very simple approach. The only difference is that on PC, someone is broadcasting trying to get ppl to do certain things which is just chaos.
Vs.
Planning a strategy and teams of 24 chat and/or simultaneously using group, guild and party chat (party chat outside the game)
Not saying that some on PC don't plan ahead and organize and use those via text chat with vent or team speak. The absense of text chat isn't that big of a deal at all. It's just that some don't like change or some have anxiety around using their own voice or hearing others based in whatever factors.
If you've played on console for the past 2 years....it's not a big deal, it's normal. Some talk, some listen some do both. Keep it moving and enjoy gaming
I've played this game since closed beta and DAoC for years.

No need to be defensive. I never said you didn't have experience with games but clearly from your past posts you don't have a lot of experience with large scale PvP in this game hence the recommendation.
Every game has its own mechanics you liking and expressing your opinion is one thing but as an MMO I'm sure you know that there are other people that need to be able to play and enjoy the game on whatever platform that they want to play it on. For the game to succeed you need as many people enjoying the game and able to play the game. I personally can live without text chat for most things but at the same time I can see where text chat would make things easier and where the game mechanics are better suited to text chat.
I have read the thread and my point still stands I haven't seen a practical way for multiple raids to communicate with each other. Adding text chat back in and leaving it as an optional toggle that can be closed by people that don't want to see it really is the simplest solution imo.

@Enaijo
He will continue to discount any MMO you bring up on console. His reasoning is flawed and his basis that ZOS made this decision because of marketing pushed him off the deepend of redicolous. Would you put this on the back of the box? 'Revolutionary Voice chat only, no need for text chat so it's not included'. Fired all of Marketing just now.
Thanks for posting some facts on DCUO for PS4. Great MMO and shows why the need for text chat belongs in MMOs.
Oh...and for the rest talking about PVP, Cyrodiil, and trade. Don't bother. He doesn't pvp or trade, so those aren't his concern.

Define practical please.
When I read your comments it's interpreted as practical for those in favor of text chat vs. the definitional of the word practical based on what exists on the console version.

I've played this game since closed beta and DAoC for years.
I'm not clueless or lacking experience.
I just know what I like and know what I don't like.
Scroll up and review the prior pages. I've commented on plenty of practical ways to communicate without text chat
Define practical please.
When I read your comments it's interpreted as practical for those in favor of text chat vs. the definitional of the word practical based on what exists on the console version.
Why not just play on the pc where you have all of those features?? Answer that? Here it is Smurf ...the post to end all posts. Wrap your head around this...
Why is it so hard to have text chat as an option? Want to use it, fine type away. Don't want to use it? Settings>Chat>Text> Turn off text chat
So Smurf as you continue to unblock me to see my posts, then go back to hiding. Answer this simple question....since you are the ONLY one arguing against having text chat.
No ZOS marketing bs answers. No comparing MMOs to 5 player party MP console games, no FPS games.
No need for arguing at all....just answer 'Why not have text chat as optional?'
@NewBlacksmurf
With all due respect, but all you try is forcing people to play the game like you wan't to and "think" like you do. I have no problem with voicechat, but I know that many people do. How many times have I tried to help new players in games like Destiny with tactics in dungeons ... no chance because most people don't use voicechat, even if it's the only way to communicate. Just play games that rely on multiplayer on console that only have voicechat or voice- and textchat and you would know what I'm talking about. It's the freakin majority of players. Why exclude all of them? The presence of a textchat wouldn't hinder you to use the voicechat.
I promise you, the absence of a textchat will affect the player numbers on the console. And that in no positive way. And for what reason? Because ZOS thinks they know better than the player how to play the game? Because using a keyboard on the sofa is so hard? That's the official explanation and for me, it's a joke. If you don't wanna use a keyboard, you can always use the controller with the virtual keyboard that the PS4/XB1 has build in. And, at least on the PS4, this virtual keyboard is learning as you use it, so after a few times you can communicate with it pretty fast.
I don't think ZOS is in the position to exclude players just because ... they wanna tell us what to do on a sofa and what not. But who am I, right?

KDefinite growth in Xbox One sales over the last 6 months, at least from my perspective. Under the hood I think you've got it backwards; this generation the PS4 is very PC-like while the Xbox One has a weird memory configuration or something going on PC's don't.
Software wise I see what you're saying, and I think that's why people are likening to the Xbox; word is out that the DRM tastes like icecream and the updates are sprinkles aplenty - people are looking at the knurled thumbsticks, the Forza-s and realizing it's not a bad product for $350.Destiny is the closest one and it doesn't have trading...and the pvp maps are
Destiny is not an MMO in any way form or fashion in the same way that randomly having sex with several different prostitutes does not constitute an ***.
Stay classy!
We're not talking about anything but MMOs, so it's pointless to go off the genre and talk about other console games. There are only a few MMOs out on console, Final Fantasy is a big one on the Sony side and Neverwinter and a few Japanese titles for the Xbox One are it.
All those mentioned have text chat. MMOS require text chat because of its vast spacing between characters and huge player base, especially on a game that won't have regional servers, two megaservers and that's it.

Exactly. That's been the question that those in favor of text chat won't answer....
Then somehow they try and deflect the question saying we are trying to make them play like us.
Funny as there are 0 threads saying hey PC Ppl, you need to stop using text chat on PC

cus those people only see from an mmo player perspective and they don't understand that from an Elder Scrolls player perspective it is a bad feature to have, but the devs are trying to appeal to both players, but mmo players are never happy they are needy and can be very annoying.. Another reason I don't like mmos
NewBlacksmurf wrote: »Almost 9 pages and another thread of over 12-15 pages and it's the same ol stuff
-conclusion-
If the PC version has the type of communication you prefer....stay on PC
If there is something on PC that you don't like and something on console you do like more....change
If you like text chat...stay on PC
If you prefer voice chat and controller support, move to console
If you feel like ZOS needs to change the UI or other elements on console so that it's more like PC....stay on PC
Apparently people just have money to throw away cause IF your PC is up to spec, and you want text chat....why would you ever change over.
Maybe you have a friend on console....O K, then play with them on voice chat but don't try and change console cause your buddy can't afford or doesn't want to buy a new PC. Also the same applies in reverse.
Get in where you fit in....keep it moving
