The game can exist on console and PC.
Because the two world do differ as far as play styles and hardware the addition of a text box begs the question of keyboard support. If keyboard support is standard and a means that many Traditional MMO players expect for communication then adding this to console confuses the console players. Voice chat is only on console and not on PC and text chat is on PC and not on console. Based on hardware this aligns very well

IF you add text chat boxes then the whole redesign and 12+ months becomes a questionable delay and further begs the question....If you add a text box then why did you redesign the UI and wait a year to release.

When a couch player in console who waited a year to play the game because you had to redesign the UI for a controller then the wonder is, we're the original plans to release on console with mouse and keyboard only?

I doubt this was the intent so adding a text chat box is counterproductive if it's only useful via a keyboard. Right now there is no extra button press to activate a text box or scroll up and down to read or toggle different text chat box options and views that are largely used on PC.

If you add a text box without redesigning the controller with the controller locked button assignments then the reviews will be very poor.

I personally don't want to wait another 3-6 months in order for another UI redesign just to add in a text chat box, keyboard chat support and controller button redesign to access the text box on a controller. There will be some that utilize the keyboard chat but as we've seen on Xbox one by example a non cross platform MMO Neverwinter. The text chat is very seldom used and often times not used at all because it's impossible to read that far away and no keyboard comes with a 20 foot USB cable. Sure you can use a wireless keyboard but again...it's only to chat so it makes more sense to talk or not talk but typing is silly as its hard to read and interrupts gameplay because you can't play and type simultaneously. Well unless you have someone else typing for you.

What you have is sound and the radial emote text chat seems ideal
Looking at an app or whatever would also be ideal for the concerns around trading, lfg, lfguold, PvP or those who want a zone chat

Don't complicate what works after a 12 month delay for a feature that will not be used largely by most.
There are valid arguments and concerns around adding the typing ability but none are required or needed but instead player preferences.

Listen to the preference feedback and honestly look at an app
There are logical reason to enhance what exists due to the concerns of omitting text chat but nothing seems to align with adding complexity to communication due to hardware that adds cost and that adds complexity

That's my opinion and feedback around this

I understand your against text box which I agree with for the most part but there needs something to be done so we can get all the PC feature another way. A companion app for a text box is what I believe is the worst way to go about it. Your suggest this instead of going out and buying other hardware aka a keyboard but instead suggest us to go out and spend hundreds of dollars for a smart device for an app? I'm the only one of 30 friends getting the game that has a smart device and I would never use it as a companion app.

I'm not sure how you think this will confuse console gamers by add a text chat. We all figured out DCUO, FF14, War Frame, Defiance, etc on consoles just fine. The problem is there are things that don't work after the 12+ months of delay which I think is why people are asking for it. I don't want a text chat box but all the suggestions don't work for 1 reason or another. I was in the beta and in area chat there were already people screaming "want to join a guild" in Daggerfall. Hell trying to get a group for PvP I ran around Daggerfall screaming in my mic looking for party members. As I had more luck with that than waiting for the group finder.

The emote thing doesn't work because when compared to using WTS in a text you don't have to be in a town, you could be exploring, events, questing, mining and so on. Using the Emote you would have to gather in a town and stand there and wait until someone comes by to buy the said item before you could continue playing because no one would be able to know what your selling otherwise. The text box allows player to continue playing no matter where there are and continue to sell there stuff. I noticed that today while playing. Adding the Emotes where they have a sound is a step in the right direction for getting other to hear you while they are off screen but we need more constructive ideas before its a step forward and not a step backwards.

I would love some work around where we get features that solve the WTS, WTB, linking to chat, etc and not have to use a chat box but as it stands only using voice chat and emotes is not the solution with what is offered.

Currently, the functionality to link items to other players via text chat is not in the console version. We understand that this is a social feature that many desire. We do plan to assess how we could implement this feature in the console version, after launch.

@ZOS_JessicaFolsom I can tell you how to implement it. Put text chat in. You can have that one for free.

I imagine they are having a bugger of a time trying to read the minds of their console users. I'd be curious to see what the console beta forums resulted in with this topic.

It was 99.99999% of people saying removing it was stupid and @NewBlacksmurf with 3 or 4 trolls for it.

How will deaf and hard of hearing people join guilds?
How will people with no headsets/kinects going to chat and make new friends?
How are console users going recruit new players and traders for their guilds? If voice chat is the only away, could you imagine the noise of possibly hundreds of players all in the same area in voice chat trying to recruit, it will sound awful.
Also, how will crafters advertise their service's? Will they be forced to stand in town with all the recruiters/sellers/trollers/ and contribute to the noise of proxi chat.

As much as proxi chat is a good feature, a vast majority of people like to stay in parties with their friends. I played the beta on xbox one and it was stupid how many people I had to mute. I had either some idiot who had their tv coming through their Kinect and cause feedback, or the trolls who wanted to show me their awesome beatboxing skills.

Seriously, out of all the bad decisions ZOS has made since launch, this is by far one of the worst

Totally agree, this is an MMO and heavily based around social activities. Proximity chat is a cool feature, but it is massively restricted compared to text chat in a lot of circumstances.

Seems like quite the oversight to forego simply including both.

My assumption is that text chat was a feature that was cut due to time or resource constraints.

My hope is that they will be implementing this feature in the future.

    Easy.

Forums. I go on forums to look for guilds, I join trading guilds to sell or buy wares (no chat needed for that either).

I never use the ingame voice chat feature on consoles. I always make a party and chat with friends there. The ingame voice chat is just horrible, 99% of the times people are just making very annoying noises (Breathing into the mic, farting on the mic, scratching on the mic, etc) or just singing or w/e.

I will play both PC & Console. I don't use text chat for all what's beeing said above but I'll still would love to have text chat in game on consoles and more games should support this. Many console players have a keyboard attached to their consoles.

I'm in a few clans where the requirements are use of forums, event calendars, etc etc, so I meet a lot of players trough that who are all more social and who all have keyboards and mics. I've I get an invite to a game it's 3 lines of text saying what they are doing, why invite, etc. This is handy when you are already in party with others or such. With a controller it's a pain to type that much.

Exactly, gamers should not be forced out of the game, to forums or other sorces,to enjoy vital parts of the game. That was what we had to do in the 90's is a massive step back.
All other MMOrpg style games on both consoles have text chat and allow users to use a keyboard if they wish. So is 100% deffinately not due to console limitations.

They could assign a hotkey. You highlight an item in inventory then press link hotkey. It then paste a preset message along with the linked item. It looks like this.

Stop worrying folks. Releasing ESO on console without some form of chat would be suicide. It would result in bad reviews, horrible launch complaints, and then it would just be added after launch due to negative feedback anyway.

where would that message appear as there is no text chat box? Flash across the screen? where the chat box is suppose to be? is it zone wide or an area like the voice chat? above a players head? I thought of this too but then wondered where/how others would see the message.

I think the emotes are awful because if they are running behind you and say using an emote "follow me" or any other one, you have no idea that they are doing an emote. maybe if the emote caused a beep, tic sound like mail in the pc version that might work but I didn't see/hear anything it in the beta

I play more then one game.

So yeah I only join guilds/clans that use (force) websites, forums and event planners on a site.

I have a social live outside of gaming and I do not play 24/7 so yeah I like to plan my gaming activities with other players on websites and event planers.

I never been to forums to trade either, I even never have used the ingame text chat for it either, I just put it up on guild AH.

I'm not saying I don't want text chat, I want it just to talk in /zone & /g1 and to say thank you to a random stranger who resurrects you if dead (Thought that's extreamly rare but I've seen it once so would be cool to say thank you) while you are using a voice party chat with your friends.
But you're able to find guilds, sell your wares etc without it.

I'm on PC and will be staying on PC, but regardless of platform you make some good points. I am hard of hearing (although not totally deaf) and although I go on ts for guild events and the like in an attempt to be sociable and listen hard for basic instructions, it can get confusing/frustrating at times and for general day to day stuff I prefer to use text chat, I would hate to be forced to use just one or the other as a sole source of communication.

Meet in a town similar to how zone chat is handled on PC.
Because people understand the means of communication you would just look for the emote text chat indicator above a players head and trade.

I'd imagine it would be under "y" on Xbox where you find enchant and you would be able to advertise what's for sale. I saw or heard on the live chat that the plans of the emote wheel text will appear above a players head vs any screen pop ups or text boxes.

If someone is interested they will start the trade with you or use an emote whelk text to indicate they are interested. This to me clears out the spam and prevents it but continues to service the ability to trade outside of a guild store.

You out the item in trade and swap money for the item or use the mail system and cod if that fits best

How do you know what people are selling beforehand, or are you suggesting that you walk up to every single person who might have an emote icon above their head and ask them personally?

    You don't think that's a little tedious?

I mean, I guess it's not that different from trying to buy anything from guild traders, which can be a pretty daunting task even w/ the selection they each carry.

I feel like this would be a downright frustrating method when you have to individually ask every single person who wants to sell something what the 1 item they are specifically trying to sell is.

@Varicite If in reference to my comment...the seller is using the text emote so it links what they are selling (if that's how this works)

Honestly tho, to me, it's more efficient just to use the guild store. I don't trade on PC other than trading within a dungeon as we did in BETA. The only outside of guild or dungeon trading I did was by walking up to people and asking if they wanted or needed XYZ item in passing.

I favor the guild systems tho

I've never been attracted to sitting in zone chat for listing or looking for guilds, groups or trade
-that's just my point of view tho. I'm sure others differ
When I'm online I'm playing vs trying to make money other than a guild store

I will say this tho...a very realistic and reasonable work around is an app
Either ZOS creates it or someone else

Tho I'm not open to text chat or using a keyboard on console I and so many people would be drawn to a simple app

Trade/AH app that allows a user to use their gamertag and specific character
List 10/20 items per gamertag and allow others to bid or buy.
The app would use the ingame Mail COD system
Ma similar solution to people who don't like the lfg tool. We've seen in Destiny the lfg.net tool that works REALLy good by not only listing pertinent info but it's integrated to actually send a msg on the actual console

I honestly believe that people are smart, talented and enjoy gaming so much that they will create a viable and free but simple work around this keeping the game clean and clear of spam, gold farmers, etc.

Maybe again I'm too open minded and optimistic but of all the console games, where there are gaps within any game an app or companion app fills the gaps

It's gonna be great this summer

That's what I'm worried about the console release is thier 2nd & last chance to get things right, I want this game to succeed, I want them to make money & bring more content in, etc ...

Waiting till after the release, bad reviews, & complaints to add back in a basic feature for a MMORPG is just going to kill all that.

Let's face we are a small percent of thier possible playerbase, most people don't follow messageboards, reddit, or gaming newsites. Most players will only find out launch day when they go to pick up thier copy & log into ESO for the 1st time, but then it will be too late the damage is done.

For better or worse when the common person hears MMORPG they think of WOW & expect certain basic features, text chat being one of them.

I'm assuming they are going with chat bubbles above your head, as that's what they said. Those are more annoying then any zone chat in my opinion.

    .
I will say this tho...a very realistic and reasonable work around is an app
Either ZOS creates it or someone else

Tho I'm not open to text chat or using a keyboard on console I and so many people would be drawn to a simple app
So you want them to invest their development efforts in creating an entirely different app, that has to be tested on multiple mobile platforms, iOS phone, iOS iPad, Android phone, Android tablet...instead of just turning text chat back on in the console code?

Seriously...you continue to amaze me in your logic.

Thanks for the tip, I didn't know that.

I see an app suggestion going on but what about us without a smart device? I'm the only one of my friends who have one and there are about 30 of us are getting the game. I never used the app for WD, AC, Crew, etc. I didn't like bouncing between both screens on the WiiU and sold my WiiU because of it. I might use it for the division because that gives you control of the UAV being honest but an app Idea is the worst kinda solution IMO and if they addan app, give us the choice of being able to use the app on our TV screen in game as a text chat. I personally think a hybrid system between voice chat and a text chat box is best. The text box being limited to the 3 letter abbreviations with the linking of items
