Do stupid player names wreck the game for you at all?

They dont wreck the game - except when they clog up chat with nonsense and I run out of ignore slots...... If the name is obnoxious / racist / etc I will report them on sight

If anything I'm amazed at names like 444ESO22... and they're usually VR12's when I see this. Its like here is a person who couldn't spend 1 minute to think of a name but they put the time in to get to end-game.

I suppose a possible solution could be a filter that uses substitutions... so say you found someone with a name that annoys you... add them to filter and then they'll become "blockedname#1" to you... or something like that. Or even better, let it enter your own names for other people. As long as you're still able to link them in chat it could work.

Well I think we can all agree that racist names are right out.

So the queefy mcbeefstain name is a for real name? wtf. There is no bottom to the pit of depravity these guys are crawling out of.

Heals-On-Toilet is borderline. It doesn't directly reference feces, just sitting somewhere where that act might take place. It doesn't exist entirely to gross me out.

All I'm saying is, if Butt Sack hits number one on the pvp leaderboards, I am not going to be involved in a push for emp.

How would you feel to be discriminated against just because of your name?
My own name wasn't my choice, my ESO character's name was. I'm sorry if I'm shallow, but I don't hold a high opinion of people who want to be named after feces. Toilet humor doesn't amuse me. Like the poster above said, it has nothing to do with gaming competence. If I met a group of people in real life and one of them immediately started cracking jokes about defecation, I'd single him out as the one to avoid too. Maybe I'd be missing out, but first impressions and all that. *shrug*

They don't ruin the game for me, but I was extremely disappointed when Zenimax scrapped the "player profile" concept, which would match you up with like-minded players. I knew I would be subject to characters with dumb names.

I typically play on RP servers to avoid these players, but obviously here I cannot.

No, stupid character names don't wreck my game, but they do preclude my having any truck whatsoever with whoever is driving that toon around (and, by proxy, anyone they may be hanging with).

Over my years of gaming, I've come to realize that a player character with an idiotic, blatantly misspelled ('Aaraggorn' or 'Leggolass,' for example - Tolkien is surely spinning in his grave), or all lowercase name is just the same as having a great big, flashing neon sign over their head that reads, "Avoid Me!"

Maybe it's just me but a lot of times I see stupid names as just trying too hard, in the same vein as the "xXxSephiroth-420blazeitxXx" names people choose. Again, Doesn't bother me, but sometimes its an "oh ... ok *eyeroll*" moment.

oh right, it's my issue. Because you didn't just personally insult me.

The reason I am offended is because you called the psychological health of those of us with lore unfriendly names or who use existing lore names into question. Stop acting like that isn't anything but offensive.

I'm so tired of elitist RP'rs pushing their snobbery on the rest of us.
Look, maybe I am mildly immature, but I don't feel that most of us are in the same ballpark as people who name their characters after feces.

It's disgusting. It makes me somewhat queasy.

Just, ew. Stop it. Stop it at once.

The hypocrisy is strong in this one... "Don't judge me because of the name that I choose! Now I'm going to be over here judging other people based on the names that they choose."

Does 'Heals on Toilet' count as potty humor? I may know that toons owner and he certainly isn't 12 LOL

Some people are real buzz kills :'(

Not sure how merely posting about one's annoyance is a buzz kill. (And BTW, the "12" isn't necessarily the physical age.)

Now, I'm not an immersion freak, but I'd hazard to guess that it is a subset of other people who have their ambiance buzz (for want of another description) done drive-by-damage to by this "Mr. Toilet" personage, flush no doubt as he is with his own sense of self-righteous individuality.

There is no indication of a reciprocal killing of that delicious buzz others of a certain aesthetic bent evidently get from marveling at the word "toilet" in a toon's name.

No, despite what has been said in this thread, the right to display this amazing bit of wit for all Tamriel to see, whether it wants to or not, is quite unhindered.

Over my years of gaming, I've come to realize that a player character with an idiotic, blatantly misspelled ('Aaraggorn' or 'Leggolass,' for example - Tolkien is surely spinning in his grave), or all lowercase name is just the same as having a great big, flashing neon sign over their head that reads, "Avoid Me!"

this may be more of a you issue. Those aren't even offensive names.

I trhink you are doing the involved player a favor avoiding them, tbh.

    Wow.. look who's talking!

ZOMG, someone named Poopstain O'Fartbags is on an entirely different level than someone with a name like Raystlin Majere.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a firm believer in getting the correct spelling or not using it at all, but it doesn't require them to be a disgusting or at the very least infantile individual.

Also, those names don't make me physically ill. Everytime I kill Poopjuice I get a little nauseous.

There are different reasons for avoiding people. Those with the most repulsive names ('Poopjuice' is a good example) impress me as being attention *** - they are to be avoided so as not to reward them with the attention they seek but (clearly, in my view) do not deserve.

(Getting back to reasons) There are also the unimaginative, the uninspired, the arrogant, the immature, and the list goes on ... character names can reveal a lot about the people behind the toon they created.

And @smeeprocketnub19_ESO: you might be onto something - feel free to avoid me, by any and all means. ;)

I don't generally avoid or /ignore people for minor reasons. My ignore list would fill up way too fast, and there is a limit on that (not sure about on forums, I've never tried.)

I'm not grouping with butt sack on the sole grounds that the name makes me ill.

Oh I don't /ignore people. I've been playing ESO (on the NA magaserver) for a going on three months now and I haven't /ignored a single person yet.

Avoiding folks and ignoring them are two entirely different things, in my view.

tbh, about 80% of my ignores are from /zone in cyrodiil. That will make you start using the ignore feature real quick. That is my exception to the rule. If you don't start ignoring people, the chat becomes incredibly toxic.

    Oh chat?

    *snicker*

All my chat channels (except for group and whisper) are turned off - and have been, on all my toons, since each one of them spawned in that cell in Coldharbour for the first time.

zone and yell are off for me normally, unless I am in reaper's march.

You can't do that in pvp though. Zone is used to communicate what is going on.
Dear Sister, I do not spread rumors, I create them.
