Do stupid player names wreck the game for you at all?

Sometimes silly names have a special meaning for the player, such as my NB wearing my 5 year old's nickname.

One of my toons is names Lars LeefMulcher. Goofy names are one thing. Names like Pees My Pants is another thing entirely.

Who gets to define which names are stupid and which are not? Personally I found all of the bot names stupid, but they just made it easier to report them.

Some names are clever, some are from other games where the user got comfortable with a particular name, some are misspellings of common names because the common spelling has already been taken or cannot be used.

I have alts with varying degrees of names, from something simple, to descriptive ones, to silly.

As someone else also said, and personally for me, 'stupid' names are the ones that show a complete lack of imagination.

I am more impressed when someone takes time to create a unique name, whether it is silly or stupid. Those running around with Ragnock, Thane, King, Prince, or whatever else may have already been used within ES lore makes me think they have inferiority complexes, or at least a weird need to define who they are by their "hero worship" of fictitious characters.
I like players and guilds with lore names. Brings back memories. Especially the guilds with vampire house names. I want western Skyrim zone open so a guild called Volkihar can post up in Castle Volkihar, haha. hopefully stage 4 vampire becomes kill on sight as well because ESO is so lore breaking at the moment because of it.

There is nothing wrong with a Guild name that harkens to the game Lore. Or even a name that does the same. But please come up with your own name character name instead of using one from the game is all I am saying.

If you are an RP'er then use your imagination to come up with an appropriate name instead of using one that already exists in this game, or others. :)

except not all of us are RP'rs, why should how you play dictate how we play?

Don't recall saying I did. I do, however, recall saying that I think that players who pick a name that is already used in the game have issues. :)

Please take the time to learn the difference between someone dictating what others can and cannot do and opinion regarding what they are doing. They are vastly different.

oh you are just personally insulting those of us who have chosen already existing names then?

Oh well okay then, that's completely different, nothing to see here.

Rp wise it's perfectly fine considering the vast gap of time between now and any of the games. This issue lies within you, not the rest of the playerbase. I find that if something is a me issue and not a them issue, I should look towards my own behavior to resolve the problem. ;)

You seem to have an issue with wanting to start verbal fights over really stupid stuff.

Again, please refer back to my 1st post regarding this issue. The OP asked a question, and I answered with my opinion. My opinion being that I found that people who use existing lore names show a decided lack of imagination and that, again in my own personal opinion, that I found those existing lore names to be "stupid" since the OP did not provide a definition of what he considers a stupid name.

You seem to have taken offense with my opinion. So clearly the issue is with you, and not me. You really should check yourself and ask yourself why you are so defensive over an opinion of a stranger on line.

The reason I am offended is because you called the psychological health of those of us with lore unfriendly names or who use existing lore names into question. Stop acting like that isn't anything but offensive.

As a proud owner of several characters with "silly" names, I say live and let live.
I'm a 40 something woman and am not what anyone would consider juvenile. I play this game so I can be goofy and have a good time.

Some people in this thread need to get over themselves and quit judging people based on their choice of character name.

Ohhhh.......and what's up with all the hate towards the pants names? LOL

All of my names are in my signature.

Slania is a reference to a Swiss folk metal band.

Khajiit is a reference to a line often heard in TES III or IV, not sure which. "Khajiit has no time for you."

Danny Hexbang is a friendly spin on Danny Sexbang of Ninja Sex Party. The character also looks just like him.

Farming Simulator is a name born of a character I used for farming Crow's Wood, but I liked it and kept it on a new alt when Crow's Wood was killed.

Quark'Rom Nog is a combination of three character names from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, my favorite television show. It seemed fitting on an Argonian.

Kivenkantaja is a reference to Finnish pagan metal band, Moonsorrow, and it translates to "stonebearer."

Clown Simulator is the evil spawn of Farming Simulator. It is a hideous level three character I use to try to sell a level 1 legendary inferno staff with no trait or enchant in zone chat just to make people mad. His armor is dyed to look like there was an explosion at the Crayola factory. I also enjoy following around random people for no reason. I'll /lute or do other weird things. They usually pretend I don't exist. Come to think of it, I should probably go see a psychiatrist over this one.

Freddy Fazbear is not included in my sig but reserved as a name. Always check the hallway lights, folks.

I once joined a group of three people whose names could be taken as innuendo when seen next to each other, although they weren't intentionally made as such. Turns out they didn't even know each other, so when I popped in as the fourth person and pointed it out, it got our three-dungeon run off to a great start. Everyone enjoyed the laugh at the silly combination of names and we went about our business.

I'm not going to exclude people that are named poopjuice, but ffs only a 12 year old would find that funny, this is a mature game, surely we are above potty humour. Personally, I will just be careful to not eat in their presence and try to refer to them with something like PJ. (Butt sack and poopjuice are actual characters btw, poopjuice has the decency to be on another faction, butt sack is on my faction, sadly.)

    This, 100%.

In a previous MMO I played, our group used to refer to this as "passing the Name Test." If we were looking for more people for some event that required more than those of us in the group, we'd always try to avoid people with idiotic names, since the vast majority of they time they would turn out to be an idiotic player as well.

"Just got a tell from 'XxPoopyHeadxX' saying he wants to join, should we let him?"

"No, don't get him... he fails the Name Test."

Seeing some of the idiotic names people choose can be really annoying, but it doesn't "wreck" the game for me.

And terrible names can be very useful. For example when the grouping tool sticks me into a PUG group with someone named "Queefy McBeefstain," I know to drop drop out of the party. No good can come from adventuring side-by-side with Queefy McBeefstain.

Take me with a grain of salt.. I only post here while killing time at work.

But seriously... (with a grain of salt), you don't think you can find competent gamers with silly names? It seems like you're seriously limiting yourself.

How would you feel to be discriminated against just because of your name? I bet it hurts! Sure, your handle here probably isn't shared with a toon, but what if it was? Someone might call you a defective fly swatter!

Silly, cutesy = fine. Don't bother me a bit.

Rude, drug-references, feces descriptions and such, no way.

It's not a matter of competence in the game, it's a matter of competence in being a person I'd ever want to associate with.

Normally yes but in ESO's case it's phasing and no name tags (default) make it so I typically only see names when I want to check or see them in zone chat (which I have turned off 98% of the time). If one name bothers me greatly (but is within the naming rules) I simply set them to ignore ... which is account bound so I am saved from their other "witty" (sure let's call it that) choices for names.

In mmos where real servers and actual in game community exists outside of the guild structure this can become much more challenging but ultimately it is how the player acts in game that is most important. My ultimate wish though is for actual RP server enforcement to occur once again in mmos (not talking about ESO atm but the pre-release talk from the devs about adding phasing choices would be nice to hear more about and soon).

Sadly developers care more about quantity of players over quality. Players have every choice to negatively impact other people play styles but few choices to play the games how they wish. More tools are required so everyone can stay happy.
