If there was some accountability for the ratings it wouldn't be a problem. I just hate when a small percentage of trolls spam buttons all day.
Well you can only "spam" a single button per post. So you can't really have that much of an effect on people, especially since LOL points don't count for anything.
Lots of LOL tagging going on in this point.
I personally don't like the idea of a disagree button. If I don't agree with a post, I simply don't tag it as anything. If I really don't agree, I'll even respond.
As someone put it, if you want to use LOL passive aggressively... Then I'll happily take that LOL. I can use all the LOLs I can get!
As a side note, if I don't agree with someone but appreciate their well thought out comments, I've been known to tag it as Insightful.
too many people that can't take criticism so we all have to wear rose colored glasses and pretend every one is special.

Punching a "dislike" or "disagree" button isn't criticism, genius. If you're too lazy to tell someone why you disagree with them, then you're not really participating in the conversation, are you?
TBH, I think the current system is stupid. If you can't take the time to say why you agree, disagree, think something is insightful/awesome, etc. in your own words then you shouldn't be responding at all.

What was the point, then?
You can't spam someone with ratings that would negatively impact them in any way. So why do you care who's rating your posts?

I disagree. There is a quote,"Speak only if you can improve upon the silence.". Sometimes I simply don't have something meaty enough to respond with but agree or like the post enough to mark it as such. I think that's fair.
nerevarine1138 wrote: »It doesn't have to be "dislike." It could be "disagree." How is that different than many of the poll threads we see? I would at like to see a "Disagree" option to the choices.
No.
If you disagree with someone, explain yourself. If you don't care enough to explain yourself or if you don't have a decent argument, then clearly there's no need for anyone to know about your disagreement.

It might be fair, but completely useless. It's what people do to make themselves feel better about something they agree/disagree with without actually involving themselves in the conversation.
Self-absorbed mental fapping and nothing more.

It's a waste of time.

You can not spam a single post, but you can click on every post you see. Get just a few of these people (there are always more than enough) and the 'disagree' trolling begins. Remember this thread is in favor of a dislike button, so we are not talking about what people can currently do. We're talking about what happens when votes have no accountability or limits. Like I said, you can have your dislike button, if you remove the anonymity and add a limit to how many a person can give in a day.

Disagree was removed because during beta someone targeted another forum user by disagreeing with every single post they made. They even went so far as to go search through the user's posting history on their profile to disagree all their old posts too. The victim was upset over it so ZOS decided it was being used as a form of griefing and removed it. For a while we didn't have any buttons at all. And then ZOS finally decided to add the positive ones back in.
you can only disagree once. the same person could have went to all his old posts and quoted them and then typed disagree...
it silly to take a feature away when there is other avenues to do the same thing anyway. if some immature person wants to disagree with everything i write before reading it, he will just look like an idiot anyway.
they could just link who likes/lol/disagree etc. transparency tends to send trolls packing, they like to be anonymous for the most part.
I think we'll be able to eventually exchange them for various crappy prizes once they set up their point redemption center. You can get stuff like glow in the dark slinkies, glasses with a fake nose and moustache or googly eyes on springs, and a big foam hand with a pointing finger that has "I'M #1!" Printed on it. Im personally saving mine for the fake can of nuts with spring snakes in it.
What are these points good for anyway? not like you get anything for them or can use them in any way?

You have yet to make a coherent case why your proposed system does anything at all, other than arbitrarily limit other peoples' actions.
If the worst-case scenario happens, and there is "disagree trolling," the consequences are as follows:
There are no consequences, because this is all just people talking.
I don't understand this weird nannying of air, of thoughts and opinions. "Accountability" and "limits" are only necessary to prevent harm. There is no harm here, there's just you wanting to police what people are allowed to say, and how they are able to express their opinions, for its own sake, for no tangible explicable reason whatsoever.

I know from experience. I've been to forums with a down vote option and it's always used for some petty popularity contest.
I prefer they do not have a down vote button. No one is stopping you from posting. This is my opinion so I don't have to prove anything. Some decisions are not made on fact, they are made on preference, and I prefer a forum without the insulting down votes. If you disagree, then write it.

There is a difference between not being able to stop people being idiots and actively condoning it.
We can't stop people using LOL as an unofficial dislike, but we don't have to accept it either, I use LOL to mean the person has been funny. If everyone else misuses it, that's not my problem, all I have to do it use it properly.
I also use it to laugh at folks.AlexDougherty wrote: »We can't stop people using LOL as an unofficial dislike, but we don't have to accept it either, I use LOL to mean the person has been funny. If everyone else misuses it, that's not my problem, all I have to do it use it properly.
