Why is this game not a sandbox?

Hello. I'm new in the forums, but what the hell were the developers thinking?? ES has always been about sandboxes and this game isn't?!?!? Some of the quests are boring as hell. Where is TG or DB quests? 5/10. I expected more from you ESO.

news just in: this is NOT Elders Scrolls VI, this another type of game based on ES lore. Also, if you took off your rose coloured glasses you might realise, not every quest in all the ES games that came before were interesting either. In fact I cant name a single game ever in which every single quest was gold.

PS they were clear well before launch those guilds would be coming later.

LOL. I expected an Elder Scrolls game, but I got crap. You may want a WOW clone, but I don't. I played wow for two months and stopped. It was so boring. People need to wake up and smell the roses and see that this game has major flaws.

In no way is this a WoW clone and in fact it goes out of its way not to be a WoW clone, everything about the interface and decision is actively trying to break the awful hold WoW has on a previously brilliant type of game.

Is this your first time on a forum? You should know that this type of post doesn't help start a constructive discussion...

Well look at how many people defend this. The devs most likely will listen to them and not us who are disappointed. So there.

This isn't what I'm saying, I'm saying that if you want a proper discussion you shouldn't start calling people fanboys on your first posts.

People are stating their opinion. Some people like the game as is, why would they want it to change? Doesn't make them fanboys (hate that word), they're just trying to make the game fun for them, same as you're doing. You're just name-calling them because they disagree, is what it really comes down to.

Again, the devs will most likely listen to them and not us.

I have been an Elder Scrolls fan since the first game, yet most people upset seem to think Elders Scrolls=Skyrim. Which any long term fan knows is completely wrong, on so many levels. Old school fans knows that with each game they improved things, while made other things worse. EACH PERSON HAS A DIFFERENT OPINION to what was good or bad. So sorry your point is worthless because there is so many out there who think Skyrim and Oblivion destroyed all Morrowind and vice versa. Who is right?

If they were TRUE fans of Elder Scrolls they would learn to settle with the things they dont like and enjoy what they do have. But once again, I repeat myself for the hard of hearing and intelligence, this is not Elders Scrolls VI, this game is a side step with different aims and style.

And if they do, that's fine. It's not the end of my world. They're still making another TES single player game that's probably going to be more akin to Skyrim. I still enjoy the game despite it not being sandboxy.. it actually reminds me of Morrowind a whole lot. Would I prefer a more sandbox style? Yeah, it's what I was introduced to MMOs on, and I still have fond memories of it.. but that doesn't mean that element alone is a make or break for me personally, and I can see where it may not fit with an MMO as well as it did in the past.

I'm not going to go into a game I don't like and demand that it change for me, that kinda sounds absurd. I instead recognize that not all games are going to be to my personal tastes, and therefore just stick to those that are.

On a positive note, there is so much of the elder scrolls that is in here...I love just reading the books that I remember over the series or finding hints to characters and stories. Maybe the falling through the world bug is a nod to a similar thing in the old Daggerfall game ;)

I hope they do listen to the majority because its pretty clear from years of MMO releases that sandbox games are generally not as successful as non-sandbox games. Putting aside your ad hominems there are no "fanboys" in this thread. Liking the fact that ESO is not a sandbox game does not make someone a fanboy, its simply a perference, some people prefer sandbox games and some people don't.

You do realise that rational people are capable of liking one aspect of the game while disliking a different aspect?

I hope you realize that most people that enjoy.. or even play the game, aren't going to go posting comments on a Youtube video, regardless of how popular the guy is.. and that people who are unhappy are more likely to speak up than those that are happy. I prefer to look at a broad spectrum of user reviews from various review sites. Not every youtube reviewer has given ESO a bad review, and the average user (not journalist) rating among review sites seem to sit around a 7.4 or so. Most people actually seem pleased, for the most part, with the game.

Read Angry Joes comments section? no thanks most youtube comments sections are hubs of the worst internet has, doesnt mean they are right. Especially on his page, most of the comments section are full of people trying to out do Angry Joe or impress him with how funny/nasty they can be.

So no, reading and believing anything you see on the internet, is never a good thing to do, nor should it be used as a way to prove your point, especially given how ridiculous and irrational the level of hate this game is getting.

And can people like you stop saying WE... FFS You never talked to me, you lump me in with this mystical WE... I DO NOT agree. I am a huge TES fan. This game does give the series justice.

Does there need to be a post with a poll so we can make sure we know who the "WE" are? It is getting tired to see people who feel entitled to talk for the masses.

Wow, you ask something and people answer it and they are fanboys because they have different opinions than you, because they dare to like the game.

To prove your points, you say we should read Angry Joe's comments section like if that was the source of truth and everything else was a lie. You do know he intentionally exaggerates to grab more people's attention and more views since people enjoy watching others ranting, right? If I create or just link a comment section where most people are happy with the game and tell you to read it as they are speaking the truth will it make you change your mind and agree with me? No, you will most probably just say they are all fanboys (you seem to like this term too) and they are all wrong.

Clearly, this game is not for you, just uninstall and go for the next one.

Why is this game not a sandbox you ask? Because the developers made the choice to make it what it is. Would it be better as a sandbox you ask? I say nay, but others might say yea, to which I say nah to their yah and nope to their hope. :)

ok..so from reading the 2 pages of this.chaotic mess i picked out 2 users who want it their way while others were stating their opinion on the mater. One even mentioned angry joe's review as if they cant think for them self thus need someone to think for them. Honestly people the devs will do what they want and if your a TES fan you will ether love or hate ESO. Complaining about it does not help and it never will, I have played ALL of the TES games and loved them all to bits. ESO is different but it is still loads of fun. And af far as it being sandbox...it would not work though it is rather open world it will not work as a sandbox. SWG was a great game then...something happened and it lost its wings and fell to the ground in a burning heap of fire.

I have been an Elder Scrolls fan since the first game, yet most people upset seem to think Elders Scrolls=Skyrim.

I think this is absolutely what this is about. I know my first TES experience was so utterly captivating that I hated the game that came afterwards because it felt wrong; I still can't play that game. I wonder if the people who hate this game so much are reeling from something similar.

Skyrim was such a massive success and was for a lot of people their first TES game. The second TES game you play is always an utter disappointment because they change all of the things. It feels like everything you loved about the game has been lost.

I think it's only when you've been through that weird process that you can find the joy of the series again.

I agree, I still have yet to put more than 20 hrs into any character in Oblivion. That game just wasn't Morrowind. Skyrim was great though and so is ESO.

People think they want an MMO sandbox, but they want "sandbox-esque" experience.

I think you're probably right with this. I say that because I love sandbox type games - I can play those over and over and purposely stop myself from finishing the game, re roll etc just to keep exploring or finding things.

This game offers enough of that for me. To me it feels like a balance between sandbox and not, so "sandbox-esque" is nailing it. We can explore quite a bit more than most mmos without being killed too fast. We can wander around and pick up lorebooks, follow the trail of herbs or whatever. Not being forced to stick with a rigid path like some other mmos is nice.

I'd be unhappy if it just leveled the whole game with me. It would be absolute chaos. If you had a level 50 standing beside a level 1 in the same instance...well that would be madness. The mob can't be both 50 and 1.

Single player sandboxes are perfectly doable. They work just fine for what they are and provide a satisfying experience to the majority of their players. Unfortunately, the sandbox style does not translate very well to an MMO. The mechanics simply don't carry over properly and they end up as a nonsensical, chaotic mess.

A single player sandbox game can be and often is a wonderful thing. I very much enjoy them myself and have for many years. Unfortunately, with the sole exception of EVE, Sandbox style MMORPGs inevitably fail hard. They always have and I suspect they always will. It has nothing to do with a lack of intelligence or imagination on the part of the players either. The sandbox design is almost impossible to implement in a multiplayer environment. As i said, the mechanics just do not translate well. Maybe someday, someone will figure it out, but they haven't yet.

I think previous posters are correct. I do believe a significant portion of people came into this game expecting Skyrim Online, and are angry that they did not get it. For most of these people, Skyrim was their first ever ES game, and is the standard by which they measure such things. I played Daggerfall. I played Morrowind. I played Oblivion. These games are VERY different from Skyrim, yet they are all Elder Scrolls games. I imagine that many of the ES first timers that started with Skyrim, if they ever tried to play Morrowind or Oblivion, would hate it as much as they hate ESO and would complain that they are just "not Elder Scrolls enough".

Keep in mind that I am NOT a mindless defender. I do not worship the devs and believe that the game is perfect and can do no wrong. There are a few serious flaws in the game, a handful of minor ones, and a good number of bugs to work out. The game less than a month old. These things take time even in the best of circumstances, and I have yet to see a MMO launch that did not have the exact same issues, many in much greater numbers. I've been playing games like this since Ultima Online, and this part of the cycle never seems to change. It's just something that has to be gone through to get the game to where it needs to be.

It's all about perspective people. From everything I've seen and heard, there is nothing here that has not happened in every other MMORPG ever. A small but very vocal minority dominates the forums with constant complaints, rants, and outright attacks on the devs, the game itself, and the fans that come to its defense, usually with a healthy dose of the word "fanboy" thrown around, to the point where the word no longer has any real meaning. This has happened in every MMORPG I have ever played, especially early on. Typically it wears off over time, as the dissatisfied people slowly but surely trickle away and leave for other games, jumping on the new "flavor of the month" games as they come out, and the process repeats itself endlessly. The op, and others like him, will hem and haw and complain for awhile. They will attack anyone who disagrees with them through attacks, trolling, namecalling, and general trash-talking. They will declare the game a complete failure and a waste of time and will make claims of it going free to play, or shutting down, or getting nerfed into oblivion or some other such nonsense. They will do this for at least the first 3-4 months of the games existence, and they will become so incredibly disruptive that the forums will occasionally become almost unreadable.

Then, they will all give up and leave. And all will be right with the world.

    Have a nice day.
